How to Choose the Right SD Card for a Camera, Phone, or Handheld Console

Choose an SD card by checking your exact device’s card format, supported capacity, and required speed class—not just the label or advertised speed.

The right SD card is the one your exact device supports. Before buying, check the manual or manufacturer’s specifications for card size, supported capacity family, and required speed class. A card that fits physically may still be incompatible—or too slow for the way you plan to use it.

Check compatibility before comparing cards

Look up the exact camera, phone, or console model in its manual or manufacturer support pages. Confirm three things: the physical card format (SD or microSD), the capacity family the device accepts, and any minimum speed class it requires. For video, check the requirement for the recording mode you actually use.

SD, SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC are capacity families, not guarantees that a device supports every card in that family. The SD Association says an SDXC host supports SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards; an SDHC host supports SD and SDHC cards; and an SDUC card requires an SDUC host. Check the device’s stated support rather than assuming a newer or larger card will work. (SD Association capacity guidance)

Read the capacity and speed labels

Capacity families

The SD Association defines these capacity ranges and associated file systems:

SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SD UHS-I Card, Up to 250MB/s Read and 120MB/s Write, 4K UHD, Full HD, U3, V30, SDSDXXJ-128G-GSCIN

  • SPEED BARRIERS SHATTERED. Save precious moments with blazing read speeds up to 250MB/s(2) and write speeds up to 170MB/s(2) [256GB-1TB capacities(1)].
  • MAXIMIZE WITH MASSIVE CAPACITY. Capture for longer and store more with up to 2TB(1) of storage that can hold up to 2,808 minutes of 4K UHD video recorded at 30 fps (641MB/minute)(9).

Card family Capacity range File system listed by the SD Association
SD Up to 2 GB FAT 12/16
SDHC Above 2 GB through 32 GB FAT32
SDXC Above 32 GB through 2 TB exFAT
SDUC Above 2 TB through 128 TB exFAT

These are standard specifications, not a list of what any particular device can use. The device’s supported capacity family sets the practical limit. (SD Association capacity guidance)

Speed classes

Speed-class markings indicate minimum sequential write performance under the standard’s defined conditions. The SD Association lists Speed Class C2, C4, C6, and C10; UHS Speed Class U1 and U3; Video Speed Class V6, V10, V30, V60, and V90; and SD Express Speed Class E150, E300, E450, and E600. Match the class family and minimum level required by the host; the Association advises choosing the same or a higher class than the device requires. (SD Association speed-class guidance)

For sustained video recording, use the required write class as your guide. A prominent peak read-speed figure in an advertisement is not a substitute for the camera’s minimum write-class requirement.

Choose for the device you own

Cameras

Camera requirements vary by model and recording mode, so there is no universal card capacity or speed class to recommend. In the camera manual, check the card’s physical size, supported capacity family, and minimum class for the video resolution, frame rate, or other mode you intend to record. If you only need a card for still photos, use the camera maker’s compatibility guidance for that model rather than inferring a requirement from video specifications.

Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes. X = 150KB/sec. SanDisk QuickFlow Technology is only available for 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities. 1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. 1TB=1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)

  • Perfect for shooting 4K UHD video and sequential burst mode photography (Full HD (1920x1080) and 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video support may vary based upon host device, file attributes and other factors. See HD page on SanDisk site.)
  • UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and Video Speed Class 30 (V30) (UHS Speed Class 3 designates a performance option designed to support 4K UHD video recording with enabled UHS host devices. UHS Video Speed Class 30 (V30), sustained video capture rate of 30MB/s, designates a performance option designed to support real-time video recording with UHS enabled host devices. See the SD Association’s official website.)

Phones

First check whether your exact phone has a removable microSD slot. SD standards are used in mobile phones, but that does not mean every phone accepts a card. If the model has a slot, confirm the supported card family and capacity in its specifications. If it has no removable-card slot, an SD card cannot add internal storage. (SD Association FAQ)

Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED

Nintendo lists microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC card compatibility for the original Switch family, with microSDXC supported up to 2 TB. Nintendo recommends UHS-I and a transfer speed of 60–95 MB/s. These are Nintendo’s support specifications, not a guarantee of identical performance in every card or setup. (Nintendo Switch FAQ)

  • Up to 128GB to store tons of pictures (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Exceptional video recording performance with UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) Class 10 rating for Full HD video (1080p) (UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) designates a performance option designed to support real time video recording with UHS enabled host devices. See consumers speed page on SanDisk site. Full HD (1920x1080) video support may vary based upon host device, file attributes, and other factors. Visit the SanDisk Video Knowledge Base for more information.)
  • Compatible with SanDisk SD UHS-I card reader (sold separately)

Downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured videos can be stored on a microSD card. Game save data remains in the system memory, so buying a larger card does not expand the space for save data. (Nintendo Switch FAQ)

Nintendo Switch 2

Switch 2 uses a different card rule: Nintendo says only microSD Express cards can be used for game storage. Regular microSD cards cannot save or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. Nintendo lists support for microSD Express cards up to 2 TB; an internet system update is required the first time a card is used. (Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility)

A microSD Express card is not an upgrade for game storage on the original Switch family: Nintendo says it reads and writes at the same speed there as a microSD card. Buy for the console generation and use case you have, not just the newest label. (Nintendo Switch FAQ)

Other handheld consoles

Check the exact handheld’s manufacturer documentation for card size, supported capacity, and any speed requirements. Compatibility rules for one console should not be assumed to apply to another.

Compare cards only after confirming they fit

Once you have a compatible card type, compare options using the requirements that matter to your device:

  • Form factor: Confirm whether the device takes a full-size SD card or microSD card.
  • Capacity family and size: Stay within the device’s supported family and capacity range, then choose capacity based on the amount of material you need to store.
  • Required speed class: Match the host’s minimum class using the same class family. For sustained video, prioritize the required write-class marking over a headline read-speed figure.
  • Special card type: Check whether the device or function requires a format such as microSD Express; a standard microSD card is not always an equivalent substitute.

The SD Association sets SD standards and promotes their adoption; it says it does not manufacture, market, or sell memory cards. Card compatibility therefore depends on the standards implemented by the card and device manufacturers. (SD Association FAQ)
