Choose a laptop by starting with the software and tasks it must handle, then compare complete configurations—not processor names or advertised battery life in isolation. The right fit depends on compatibility, workload, portability, display, connections, and total price; there is no single best operating system or specification for everyone.
Start with what you need the laptop to do
Before comparing models, list the applications and peripherals you rely on, the most demanding work you expect to do, and where you will use the computer. A laptop used mainly for everyday browsing and documents has different priorities from one expected to handle demanding creative or technical work. This workload-first approach is also the basis of Microsoft’s PC and laptop buying guidance and TechRadar’s 2026 explanation of which laptop specifications matter.
- List required software: Check that the applications you need support the operating system and specific hardware you are considering.
- Identify the heaviest task: Use your most demanding regular workload—not just basic tasks—to judge performance needs.
- Decide where you work: A machine that stays on a desk can prioritize screen space and connections differently from one carried between locations.
- Set a total budget: Compare the price of the configuration you actually need, including any compatible adapter or other necessary accessory.
Choose an operating system by compatibility
Windows PCs and Apple Mac laptops are both valid choices. Start with the programs, workflows, and peripherals that must work; then compare machines that meet those requirements. Microsoft’s buying guide focuses on Windows PCs, while Apple’s official Mac laptop support page covers its current Mac laptop families and support information. Neither source establishes a universal winner or a complete compatibility matrix.
Before buying, check compatibility for the exact application and device rather than assuming that a general operating-system label guarantees support. If a particular workflow is essential, verify it with the software maker or device documentation.

Compare the whole configuration
A model name alone is not enough: listings may differ in operating system, memory, storage, display, ports, and price, including across regions. Compare the precise configuration offered by the seller. Microsoft identifies processor, memory, storage, display, and battery details as useful buying criteria; TechRadar’s 2026 guides also emphasize practical concerns such as ports and weight.
| What to compare | How to decide |
|---|---|
| Processor and performance | Match the laptop’s performance to your most demanding regular applications and workload. Do not choose by processor label alone. |
| Memory | Consider the software and tasks you expect to run during the laptop’s ownership period. Check whether memory is upgradeable on the exact model; do not assume it can be added later. |
| Storage | Choose capacity in light of the files and applications you expect to keep locally. Confirm the exact configuration and whether storage can be changed. |
| Display | Balance screen size and quality against the workspace you want and how much weight you are willing to carry. |
| Battery | Look for testing of the specific model under conditions relevant to your use, not just the manufacturer’s runtime claim. |
| Weight and keyboard | Consider how often you will carry the laptop and whether its size and keyboard suit your daily work. |
| Ports and connectivity | Check the actual ports against your monitor, storage devices, and other peripherals. Confirm any adapter works with both the laptop and the device. |
| Total price and configuration | Compare like-for-like listings, checking operating system, memory, storage, display, ports, seller, and price at purchase time. |
Choose memory and storage for your ownership period
There is no single memory or storage amount established as right for every laptop buyer. Think about the applications and workload you expect to use, how much data you plan to keep on the computer, and how long you expect to own it. Then compare the configurations available within your budget.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Upgradeability can change the value of a configuration. TechRadar cautions that RAM may not be upgradeable, so verify whether memory and storage can be changed on the exact model before counting on a future upgrade. A model family’s general description may not confirm what is changeable in the particular configuration for sale.
Judge battery life against your routine
First estimate how long you need to work away from an outlet. Then look for independent results for the specific laptop and a test method that resembles your use. Manufacturer claims and test results are not interchangeable: runtime depends on the model and conditions, and a result from one test should not be treated as a guarantee for another person’s workload. Microsoft advises checking the individual device’s battery details, and TechRadar recommends paying attention to tested runtime rather than relying only on claims.

List the devices you expect to connect—such as an external display or hard drive—and compare their connections with the ports on the exact laptop. Apple notes that an adapter may be needed if an external display, hard drive, or other device does not connect to a Mac’s Thunderbolt or USB-C ports. That is a conditional need, not a reason every Mac buyer must purchase an adapter. Confirm compatibility with both the computer and peripheral before choosing one.
