Choose a term your cash flow can support, your customer agrees to, and local rules permit. Thirty days is a common UK business-to-business reference point—not a universal standard. Set the term before work or delivery where possible, and make both the due date and the event that starts the payment clock clear in the agreement and on the invoice.
What an invoice payment timeframe means
Payment terms are part of the commercial agreement: they tell a customer when and how to pay. They also determine how long you are financing the work or goods before cash arrives. The Australian Government’s payment-terms guidance advises that clear terms help businesses get paid on time and manage cash flow.
State the agreed term in the contract or other agreement and repeat it on the invoice. Avoid relying on a phrase such as “net 30” without clarifying what date starts the 30-day period. Depending on the arrangement, the trigger might be the invoice date, receipt or acceptance of goods, or completion of a service. The applicable agreement and local rules matter.
How common timeframes compare
Each option trades faster access to cash against customer expectations and credit risk. The evidence does not establish one duration as best for every business or transaction.
#1 Best Overall
- FIND ANY PAPER IN SECONDS: Color-coded tabs and a blank label sheet let you sort up to 24 categories by class, client, or month, then flip straight to what you need. Write-and-erase tabs make relabeling instant when projects change.
- BUILT FOR A FULL SCHOOL YEAR: Tear-resistant covers, acid-free construction, and an oversized coil spine hold heavy paper loads without splitting or distorting. Two elastic straps lock everything shut so nothing slides out in a backpack or work bag.
- STANDARD PAGES SLIDE RIGHT IN: Each of the clear pockets fits 8.5 x 11 inch sheets without bending corners. Push papers all the way to the back edge and they stay flat every time you close the cover.
- REPLACES A BINDER AND NOTEBOOK: Works as a teacher binder, an IEP organizer for teachers, or a homeschool organization hub without hole-punching a single page. Slip syllabi, report cards, or lesson plans in and carry one item instead of three.
- EXTRAS ALREADY INCLUDED: A clear zippered utility pouch holds pens, note cards, and stencils. The customizable front cover has a non-glare overlay, and a clear back pocket lets you see loose items at a glance.
| Timeframe | Potential fit and trade-off |
|---|---|
| Due on receipt | Can reduce the time you wait for payment, but may not suit customers or transactions where an approval or acceptance step comes first. State what “receipt” means. |
| 7 or 14 days | Shorter terms can limit the period you extend credit. They may be appropriate when your cash needs or customer-risk assessment call for them, though customers and sector practices may differ. |
| 30 days | A common reference point in a UK survey of businesses with business customers, but not a universal prescription. The survey also found shorter and longer terms. |
| Longer than 30 days | May reflect customer requirements or industry practice, but leaves you carrying the cost and risk of the unpaid balance for longer. Consider whether the commercial value justifies that exposure. |
In the Department for Business and Trade’s UK survey, 54% of businesses with business customers typically offered 30 days after the invoice date. Eleven percent expected payment within seven days after invoice date; among microbusinesses, that figure was 22%. These are survey findings, not rules or recommendations for all markets. The survey also found that 41% cited industry standard as an influence on their standard terms, 22% cited cash-flow management, and 70% said they adapted terms in particular circumstances. How to choose a term that fits
1. Work out how much credit you can safely offer
Start with the effect on your cash flow if payment arrives on the due date—or later. Consider the amount owed, your expenses while waiting, and whether you could absorb a delay or nonpayment. Offering credit can support sales, but it creates cash-flow risk. The Australian Government recommends considering customer credit checks and setting credit limits.

2. Check customer and sector expectations
Ask what terms the customer expects and what is usual in your sector, then weigh those expectations against your own working-capital needs. A customer’s request for a longer period is a negotiating point, not an obligation to accept it. If you do agree to longer terms, account for the additional time your money will be tied up.
3. Match the trigger to the transaction
Agree the payment clock’s starting event before work begins or goods are delivered where possible. For example, a term might run from the invoice date, or from receipt or acceptance of the goods or service. Name the trigger plainly in the agreement and invoice, and make sure the stated due date follows from it.

4. Put the practical details in writing
Alongside the due date and trigger, specify accepted payment methods, any credit conditions, and what happens if the account becomes overdue. Include late-payment charges or interest only where they are lawful and applicable. For jurisdiction-specific terms, consult an official local source or qualified adviser.
Plan for late payment and follow up
Late payment is a real cash-planning risk, but the figures depend on who was surveyed and how lateness was measured. In the UK government survey, 49% of small businesses said customers took longer than their typical agreed terms, compared with 36% overall. Separately, the Department for Business and Trade reported that large UK businesses took a median 32 days to pay suppliers in 2025, and 15% of invoices were paid late by count. The latter statistics cover large UK businesses, not all companies or invoices. See the 2025 large-business payment data.
