There is no substantiated, independently tested “best scarf for women” ranking for 2023 in the sources available. A better way to choose is to match a scarf’s material and shape to the weather, how you plan to wear it, and the care you are willing to give it. Wool and cashmere are common cold-weather choices; lightweight silk, cotton, and linen are options for milder days.

Choose by season and intended use

Start with when and how you expect to wear the scarf. M&S recommends lightweight silk for spring or autumn transitions and chunky cashmere or wool for colder months. That is retailer styling guidance, not a measured comparison of warmth. M&S’s scarf styling guide puts it simply: “When choosing a new scarf, think about the season you’re buying it for.”

  • For cold weather: Look at wool, merino blends, or cashmere, then consider how much warmth and bulk you want.
  • For spring or milder weather: Linen, lightweight cotton, and lightweight silk are styling options that are less bulky.
  • For styling beyond the neck: A silk scarf can be tied in the hair, worn as a headband or bandana, or wrapped around a handbag handle, according to M&S.
  • For shoulder coverage: Look for a larger wrap and check its dimensions before buying.

How the main scarf materials differ

Wool and merino

Wool and merino blends are practical categories to consider for winter. TODAY quotes fashion stylist Naina Singla describing them as “more practical and affordable” while still providing insulation. This is expert styling advice, not a comparative test of specific scarves or fibers. See TODAY’s scarf guide.

Cashmere

M&S recommends chunky cashmere for colder months and describes its fine fibers as providing natural insulation. Treat that as general retailer guidance; it does not establish how warm a particular scarf will be. Check the product’s fiber content, thickness, and care instructions.

Silk

A lightweight silk scarf can suit transitional weather and offers several styling options, including neckwear, hair styling, and a handbag accent. If you want a scarf primarily for warmth, compare its weight and dimensions with wool or cashmere options rather than assuming all scarves provide similar coverage.

Linen and lightweight cotton

Singla recommends linen and lightweight cotton for spring. These are stylist recommendations for milder-weather dressing, not a technical ranking of fibers or a guarantee of comfort in every climate.

Pick a shape that works for how you will wear it

Retail catalogs distinguish square, oblong, skinny, and wrap scarves. The right form depends on whether you want a compact accent, a longer neck wrap, hair styling, or shoulder coverage. Nordstrom’s scarves and wraps catalog illustrates these shape categories; check an individual listing’s dimensions because shape names alone do not establish size.

  • Square: A compact option for neck or hair styling; verify measurements to see how it folds and ties.
  • Oblong: A longer shape that can wrap around the neck or hang down.
  • Skinny: A narrow accent scarf suited to lighter styling rather than broad coverage.
  • Wrap: A larger format that may cover the shoulders; confirm its dimensions and material.

What to check before buying

  1. Read the fiber label. Confirm whether the scarf is wool, cashmere, silk, cotton, linen, or a blend. Do not rely on a broad product name if the fiber content is listed separately.
  2. Check dimensions and construction. Match the measurements to your intended use, and review the finishing details the seller actually discloses.
  3. Review care instructions. Follow the garment’s care label rather than assuming all scarves made from the same broad material can be washed alike. A Brooks Brothers scarf category page and other current retailer listings can help you see available categories, but assortments and availability change.
  4. Compare like with like. Consider season, comfort against your skin, dimensions, care, and disclosed construction. The sources cited here do not provide apples-to-apples tests of warmth, durability, or value.

What the “2023” in the original title means

The year should be treated as historical context, not as evidence of a verified 2023 winner. The sources available include a brand-authored fabric explainer and product-category pages or guides from other dates; they do not establish a tested 2023 ranking. Current styles, stock, and prices can change, so use the material-and-use criteria above rather than treating any product as a proven best seller, cheapest option, or most durable choice.
