Before comparing prices or course formats, identify the professional register or membership you may want to join, then confirm which qualifications and training formats it accepts. There is no single course credential that applies everywhere.
Start with your goal and where you plan to practise
For personal interest, you can choose a course for its subject matter and teaching style. If you intend to work with clients, choose backwards from the professional pathway you want: identify the relevant body, check its current entry criteria, and then assess courses against them.
In the UK, hypnotherapy is not statutorily regulated. The National Hypnotherapy Society says, “Hypnotherapy is not regulated in the UK – and there are currently no plans for statutory regulation.” Its register is accredited under the Professional Standards Authority’s Accredited Registers programme, but that is not the same as government licensing or a universal qualification requirement. Other organizations set their own criteria, and rules in one country should not be assumed to apply in another.
In Australia, the Australian Hypnotherapists Association distinguishes nationally recognized vocational education from recognition for professional-association membership. It says it reviews and recognizes courses that meet its entry-level membership criteria rather than accrediting training institutions. That approach does not establish UK eligibility.

Find out exactly what “accredited” means
Ask the school and the organization named in its marketing what recognition covers. Does the organization assess the course, the school, or a particular qualification? What qualification will you receive, and can graduates apply for the specific register or membership you are considering?
For example, the National Council for Hypnotherapy says only schools offering its Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) can receive its school accreditation. It describes its review as assessing a school’s proficiency in enabling students to gain the HPD, not accrediting the entire course. The National Hypnotherapy Society uses different distinctions: it describes “quality checked” courses as not providing a route to its register, while its “accredited” courses are assessed against its training standards. Treat each label as specific to the organization that grants it.
Confirm eligibility directly with the relevant professional body, ideally in writing. A school’s claim that a course is accredited does not, by itself, establish that you qualify for the membership, registration, insurance, or scope of practice you want.

Compare the syllabus, practice, and assessment
Request the full syllabus, assessment details, and required reading before enrolling. A course aimed at client work should cover more than hypnosis techniques: look for clinical communication, client intake and assessment, treatment planning, ethics, boundaries, contraindications, referral, and the practical management of a practice. Strong preparation teaches how to judge whether and when an approach may suit a client, not only how to perform a sequence of techniques.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy advises prospective students to request a full syllabus and review whether it has enough depth to prepare graduates for practice. Its school-accreditation criteria state 120 classroom hours; this is an NCH criterion, not a universal statutory minimum.
Check how students develop and demonstrate practical competence. Ask whether the course includes observed demonstrations, structured practice, case discussion, individual feedback, and practical assessment. Find out what happens if a student needs more practice, who decides when they are ready, and what standards are used. Also ask whether graduates can access ongoing supervision and peer support.

Check delivery format against registration rules
Compare the amount of in-person, live-online, and self-paced study—not just the course’s overall duration. Ask how practical work is supervised, whether attendance is synchronous, and whether the professional body you have in mind accepts that format.
The National Hypnotherapy Society states that training conducted purely online is not accepted for its registration criteria. That is the Society’s rule, not a universal rule for every organization or country. The National Council for Hypnotherapy’s selection guidance reports that UKCHO and CNHC set minimums of 120 face-to-face training hours and 450 total study hours. Its page was last modified on 7 April 2020, so confirm current requirements directly with the relevant body rather than treating those figures as current rules for every course.

Evaluate trainers and student support
Ask about instructors’ professional standing, teaching experience, and client-practice experience. Find out the tutor-to-student ratio and how much individual feedback students receive. If you may need adjustments or have concerns about assessment, check the school’s accommodation and appeals procedures before you commit.

For a professional pathway, ask what support the school provides for understanding registration, supervision, continuing professional development (CPD), and the transition to practice. The National Hypnotherapy Society’s register guidance states 30 hours of CPD annually and gives 1.5 hours of supervision monthly as a full-time-practice guideline. These are Society recommendations for its register, not general legal requirements.

Ask for a complete fee schedule rather than comparing headline tuition alone. Check what the quoted fee includes and what may be extra: teaching sessions, assessments, required reading, supervision, travel, placements, later membership, and registration. Also clarify attendance expectations and the time required for independent study.
There is no established price comparison that makes a particular course the best value. A short or inexpensive course is not automatically suitable preparation, while a longer or more expensive one is not automatically better. Compare the full commitment with the qualification and professional pathway you actually need.

Use a side-by-side course checklist
Apply the same questions to every option you are considering:

Compare answers against the requirements you verified with your target organization. If a provider cannot clearly explain its qualification, assessment, practical training, or additional fees, ask for clarification before paying.
