Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no cellphone service that is best for everyone. Choose by checking coverage where you live and travel, comparing the full bill for your number of lines, matching data and hotspot terms to your use, and confirming that your phone is compatible. This U.S.-focused guide uses current information available as of October 8, 2026; it is not a reconstruction of 2025 plan prices or promotions.
Start with the places you need service
Before comparing prices, make a short list of the places and routes where a reliable connection matters: home, work, school, regular travel, and any frequent destinations. National network rankings cannot tell you whether a particular provider works well at those locations.
Use the FCC National Broadband Map to compare reported mobile coverage. You can select the data’s as-of date and distinguish 3G, 4G, and two 5G thresholds: 35/3 Mbps or above and 7/1 Mbps or above. The FCC explains the map’s key limitation: “The coverage areas reflect where consumers should be able to connect to the mobile network when outdoors or in a moving vehicle; they do not show indoor coverage.” Check each carrier’s own map as well, and, where practical, ask people who use the network in your regular locations about their experience.
The FCC’s 2026 report, using data from June 2025, says 5G-NR service at advertised speeds of at least 35/3 Mbps covered about 95% of the U.S. population, 69% of road miles, and 39% of square miles. At least two providers covered about 88% of the population, 50% of road miles, and 20% of square miles at those speeds. Those are national measures, not a promise of reception at your address. If you believe the map misstates outdoor or in-vehicle availability, the FCC describes how to submit a challenge using its app; its instructions say not to run those challenge tests indoors.

Compare the full cost for your household
A per-line headline price can obscure what your household will actually pay. Compare plans using the number of lines you need, and calculate both the recurring bill and the first-year cost. Include taxes and fees, required autopay or paperless-billing enrollment, device installments, activation charges, and any promotion’s eligibility rules and end date. Add the cost of hotspot or international options only if you expect to use them.
- Write down the total recurring charge for all lines, not just a per-line price.
- Check whether the advertised amount depends on autopay, paperless billing, a particular payment method, or another qualifying service.
- Separate service charges from phone financing and one-time activation or setup charges.
- Note when a promotional credit or discount ends and what the bill becomes afterward.
Provider disclosures show why the details matter: AT&T describes conditional discounts and fees, while Visible’s current disclosures address monthly prices, taxes and fees, network and speed terms, and no-contract terms. These are examples of details to verify, not a stable comparison of the market. Read the provider’s current broadband facts label and terms before enrolling; prices and promotions can change.

Choose prepaid or postpaid based on billing and flexibility
Prepaid generally means paying before the service period; postpaid generally means receiving a bill after service. Neither category guarantees a particular price, coverage, or service quality. Compare the specific plan’s full cost and terms, including flexibility, device financing, support, data conditions, and features you will actually use. The FCC’s wireless billing guide explains the distinction between prepaid and postpaid service.
Match data, network conditions, and hotspot limits to your use
Look at cellular-data use over representative billing periods in your phone’s settings, where available, and distinguish cellular use from Wi-Fi. Then compare that pattern with each plan’s high-speed data allowance and its terms for busy networks or usage thresholds. “Unlimited” does not by itself tell you how much high-speed data is included or how network congestion may affect speeds.

Check hotspot data separately if you tether a laptop or tablet, work remotely, or travel without dependable Wi-Fi. Compare the hotspot allowance and what happens after it is used; a large allowance may cost more than many people need. Consumer Reports recommends estimating data needs before choosing a plan and cautions that some customers may not need the more expensive hotspot option.
Verify your phone and 5G access before switching
Confirm the exact phone model with the provider’s bring-your-own-device or compatibility tool before switching or buying a handset. A 5G label alone does not guarantee access: you need a compatible device, an appropriate plan, and coverage where you use the phone. AT&T states that a compatible device is required and that coverage is not available everywhere. If you need a new phone, an unlocked 5G model may give you flexibility, but it is not a substitute for checking compatibility with your chosen provider.

Make the decision with a side-by-side checklist
Once you have narrowed the options to providers that appear suitable in your area, compare them against the same criteria:
- Coverage: reported service at home, work, and on regular routes, with the map’s outdoor and in-vehicle limits in mind.
- Total cost: household bill, fees, required discounts, device payments, one-time charges, and the cost after promotions expire.
- Data: high-speed allowance, network-congestion terms, and any threshold that changes speeds.
- Hotspot: included amount, post-limit treatment, and whether the allowance suits your actual tethering needs.
- Phone fit: compatibility of your exact device and the plan’s support for the 5G service you expect to use.
- Billing and flexibility: prepaid or postpaid arrangement, contract terms, financing, and support options that matter to you.
- Extras: international service or other perks only when you expect to use them and their cost is clear.
Consumer Reports reported in its May 20, 2025 buying guide that 56% of recent switchers in its member survey said they saved money. The guide’s search-result description says the survey involved around 75,000 members and that some saved more than $40 per month. That is survey context, not a promise that switching will save every customer money; compare your own current bill with the candidate plan’s complete terms.

What to know about the 2025 date in the title
Plan prices, promotions, and eligibility rules are time-sensitive. The available carrier disclosures reflect later 2026 terms, so they cannot establish what every plan cost throughout 2025. Use this guide’s selection method for a current decision, and verify live terms on the provider’s site before signing up. If you are specifically researching a past 2025 offer, you will need a dated record of that offer rather than a current price page.
