Measure your chest, natural waist, fullest hip, and inseam; check the specific garment’s size chart; then test coverage and movement by reaching, bending, sitting, and walking.
Start with measurements and the garment’s size chart
Use a flexible tape measure and record four measurements:
- Chest: around the fullest part of your chest.
- Natural waist: around the crease where your waist bends.
- Hips: around the fullest part of your hips and rear.
- Inseam: from the inside leg to the point where you want the pant hem to fall.
Compare the measurements with the chart for the brand and specific style. If they point to different sizes, follow that maker’s instructions rather than assuming all brands size the same way. For example, Cherokee’s size chart says to choose based on the hip measurement when waist and hip measurements differ.
Fit labels also vary by maker. Cherokee describes its junior contoured fit as close to the body, missy relaxed as roomier with ease and coverage, and unisex as loose and spacious. Treat those as descriptions of Cherokee’s cuts, not universal sizing standards. If your measurements fall between sizes, consider the maker’s guidance and whether you prefer a closer or roomier fit.

Check fit through movement and coverage
A useful fit should allow you to move without pulling, pinching, or losing coverage. If possible, try the top and pants on together and check them in the kinds of positions your work requires.
- Reach overhead and forward. Look for pulling across the shoulders or chest, restricted arms, or a top hem that rides up.
- Bend and sit. Check for tightness at the hips, thighs, or crotch, and for a waistband that digs in or slips.
- Walk and check the hems. Pant legs should move comfortably without catching on or interfering with your footwear.
- Check coverage in each position. Make sure the top stays long enough and the waistband and rise remain comfortable as you move.
Cherokee’s fit guidance recommends balancing a semi-fitted feel with freedom of movement. Active workers may prefer joggers or stretch styles, but neither cut is automatically right for every wearer or workplace.

Compare fabric and stretch construction
Stretch terms describe how a fabric is intended to move, but terminology may differ between brands and a label cannot guarantee personal comfort. Cherokee describes its stretch options this way:
| Cherokee term | Manufacturer description | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 2-way stretch | Moves side to side | Whether it gives where your tasks require movement |
| 4-way stretch | Moves side to side and vertically | Whether the garment remains comfortable as you reach, bend, and sit |
| 360-degree stretch | Multidirectional movement with rebound | How the specific fabric feels and recovers on you |
These are Cherokee’s descriptions, not a universal standard. Its guidance associates woven poly-spandex blends with a more structured feel and knit fabrics with a softer, stretchier feel. Check the product’s actual fabric details and, if practical, try it on before deciding.
Rank #3
Other construction features worth inspecting include adjustable pull-on, drawstring, or elastic waistbands; side or back panels; dolman or raglan sleeves; and mesh or knit inserts. They are options to assess, not guarantees that a garment will fit better.
Compare rise, leg cut, and inseam
Waist size alone does not determine whether scrub pants will work for you. Compare the rise, leg shape, inseam, footwear, and movement needs. Straight, tapered, jogger, and flare legs each give a different look and feel; choose the one that suits your preferences and workplace requirements.
Rank #4
Cherokee’s chart gives these approximate inseams:
| Length | Approximate inseam |
|---|---|
| Short | 29–30 inches |
| Regular | 31–32 inches |
| Tall | 34–35 inches |
| Ultra-tall | About 36 inches, unhemmed |
Those are chart figures, not a promise that every product comes in every length. For instance, Cherokee lists its Achieve men’s jogger in regular at 30½ inches and short at 28 inches. Check the product listing for the style and length you intend to buy.

Consider waistbands and pockets in the fit
An adjustable waistband can help you find a comfortable fit, but it should stay in place without digging in. Check how the rise and waistband feel while standing, sitting, and bending—not only when you first put the pants on.
Pockets change how a garment hangs once loaded. Choose storage for what you actually carry, and check whether pocket placement or bulk pulls the fabric, makes the top sit awkwardly, or restricts movement. More pockets do not necessarily make a better-fitting uniform.
Use product specifications as examples, not fit guarantees
Manufacturer listings can help you compare construction details, but they are not independent wear tests. Cherokee lists its Achieve men’s 5-Pocket Pull-On Jogger Scrub Pant, model CK-CK034, as a relaxed-fit style with regular and short inseams, an elastic waistband with internal drawstring, five pockets, 80% polyester/20% spandex fabric, and 360-degree stretch. Those are listing specifications; verify the live listing for current details.
Cherokee describes its FORM collection as an 86% nylon/14% spandex blend with 360-degree stretch, offered in trouser, tapered, and jogger silhouettes. That is the manufacturer’s collection description, not a claim that one silhouette suits every body or task.
A quick comparison checklist
When choosing between two specific scrub garments, compare:
Quick Recap
- How their size charts cover your measurements and how the maker describes the fit.
- Whether shoulders, hips, thighs, and waist stay comfortable through your movement checks.
- The stated fabric construction and direction of stretch.
- Whether the waistband adjusts and stays comfortable.
- The rise, leg silhouette, and inseam available for that item.
- Coverage and pocket placement for the items you carry at work.
