How to choose a newborn diaper
Start with your baby’s current weight and the size guidance for the particular diaper. Then check how it fits on your baby. Age alone is not a reliable sizing rule, and “Newborn” does not mean the same weight range across every brand.
Pampers says its size chart is based on weight and recommends checking for a snug waistband, no gaps around the legs, and no red marks. Those fit cues are more useful than choosing a size from age alone. Pampers’ size chart

The ranges published by Pampers and Huggies illustrate why it is important to check the specific product label or size chart:

The ranges overlap: for example, Pampers lists Size 1 for babies weighing 8–14 lb. while its Newborn size is listed up to 10 lb. That is not a universal cutoff between sizes; follow the product’s own guidance and judge the fit on your baby.
What the named products tell you—and what they don’t
Pampers options
Pampers’ newborn guide names Swaddlers, Pure Protection, and Baby Dry as options for newborns. The company describes features including an umbilical-cord notch and wetness indicator on some products, along with softness, absorbency, and leak-protection claims. Huggies Skin Essentials
Huggies lists Skin Essentials in Newborn size for 6–9 lb. and describes a zinc-oxide-enriched liner and skin-protection benefits. Those details are Huggies’ product claims; the cited page does not independently establish performance or show that the diaper prevents or treats a skin condition. Why this is not a six-diaper lab ranking
A trustworthy “tested in our lab” ranking requires a named test roster, a consistent method, and the results for each diaper. The available information does not establish those items, so it cannot support six picks or comparative claims about leakage, absorbency, dryness, or value.

Consumer Reports’ listing for “19 Best Diapers From Our Tests,” updated March 27, 2025, says it tested diapers from 30 brands. To compare newborn diapers fairly, an actual test would need to document each product’s stated weight range and fit, plus comparable results for containment and absorbency or dryness. Construction details such as a cord notch can be noted when documented, but marketing descriptions should not be treated as test scores. Price comparisons would also need a defined location, date, and package size.

How much to buy before your baby arrives
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org page reports nearly 3,000 diapers during a baby’s first year and an estimated 8,000 across the diaper-wearing period. These are broad estimates, not a newborn-specific rate or a prediction for every family. They are not a reason to stock up heavily on one newborn size: babies grow, and product size ranges vary.
