There is no single “best shorts” choice across running and hiking: the activities reward different combinations of fit, storage, durability, and comfort. Current published guides offer useful category-specific recommendations, but the evidence available here does not support calling this a firsthand-tested 12-product roundup. The picks below are attributed to the publications that tested them.

Start with the activity, not a universal “best” pick

Running shorts need to stay comfortable at pace, with a liner and pocket arrangement that suit the runner. Hiking shorts must also handle longer wear, varied movement, and the demands of carrying gear. A lightweight short with minimal storage may suit a run but frustrate a hike; a durable hiking short may feel heavier or less suited to running.

For either activity, compare inseam and coverage, fit, fabric, liner, waistband, pocket capacity and security, chafing, moisture handling, and price. For hiking, also weigh durability, drying, breathability, stretch, and how pockets sit when loaded.

What current running-shorts reviews recommend

Outside’s 2026 men’s running-shorts guide reports that 10 testers ran more than 4,000 miles and the team tested 57 pairs over a full year. Its overall pick is the Rabbit FKT 5-inch; its value pick is the Terignota Sendero. The guide also considers wear-anywhere, run/gym hybrid, split, trail, 2-in-1, half-tight, and 7-inch categories. These are Outside’s selections, not results from testing for this article.

Men’s Health published a men’s running-shorts guide on July 10, 2026, assessing fit, materials, chafing, waistband comfort, pocket function, and moisture wicking. Its Brooks Journey Short example has a 5-inch inseam, a liner, side pockets, and a rear zip pocket. Men’s Health notes smaller pockets and a looser liner as tradeoffs, so it may not suit someone who wants more storage or a close-fitting liner.

What matters most on a run

  • Liner: Decide whether you prefer built-in support or an unlined short. A liner’s fit is personal; a looser one may not work for every runner.
  • Pockets: Check whether the pocket layout fits what you carry and whether closures or placement keep items secure. Pocket bounce can matter as much as low weight.
  • Length and cut: Inseam affects coverage and freedom of movement. Compare the stated length with the coverage you want rather than assuming one length is best for every run.
  • Use: A short designed for trail running, gym sessions, or everyday wear may prioritize different features. Match the design to your typical run.

What current hiking-shorts reviews recommend

CleverHiker’s guide, updated June 10, 2026, reports testing more than 40 pairs and hiking 6,000 miles. Its team says it evaluated comfort, durability, features, drying time, weight, and packed size in side-by-side hiking tests. The guide’s overall pick is the Patagonia Quandary. Other listed options include the Patagonia Strider Pro, REI Co-op Flash, Terignota Sendero, KUHL Renegade Rock, Janji Multi, Outdoor Research Ferrosi, prAna Stretch Zion II, Patagonia Multi Trails, The North Face Wander 2.0, Vuori Kore, and Cotopaxi Brinco. These are CleverHiker’s judgments; the available evidence does not establish comparable specifications or prices for each model.

What matters most on a hike

  • Durability and mobility: Consider fabric durability alongside stretch and freedom of movement for the terrain and activities you expect.
  • Storage: Look at pocket layout and capacity, including whether pockets lie flat or become bulky when loaded.
  • Comfort over time: Fit through the waist and thigh, inseam, breathability, and drying behavior all affect comfort on a long day.
  • Packability and versatility: Weight and packed size matter if you carry spare clothes; versatility matters if you want one pair for hiking and other activities.

A product specification example: Patagonia Multi Trails

Patagonia’s official product page lists the Multi Trails short with a 6-inch inseam and a shell made of 90% recycled polyester and 10% spandex. It specifies a recycled-polyester boxer-brief liner, two zippered front pockets, and a snap-closure back pocket; an 8-inch version is also listed. The page displayed a price of $85 when accessed, but price and availability can change. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent findings about performance.

How to choose between the options

  1. Choose the activity. Start with running or hiking, then narrow further to the type of run or hike you do most.
  2. Set your fit preferences. Decide on inseam, coverage, liner style, and how the shorts should fit through the waist and thigh.
  3. Match storage to what you carry. For running, pay attention to security and bounce; for hiking, consider capacity and how loaded pockets sit.
  4. Balance comfort with durability. Running choices often emphasize fit, chafing, and moisture handling; hiking choices also make durability, drying, and packed size important.
  5. Check current product details before buying. Confirm the exact model, inseam, liner, pocket configuration, price, and availability, since these details may vary by version or change over time.

What “tested and reviewed” means here

The testing figures and product judgments in this article belong to Outside, Men’s Health, and CleverHiker. No shorts were tested for this article, and the evidence does not provide enough consistent model-level detail to rank 12 products fairly in one combined list. Treat each publisher’s picks as recommendations within its own activity category, not as a universal ranking.
