How to Choose Investments for a Child’s Trump Account

Treasury’s announced Trump Account lineup includes S&P 500, total U.S. market and S&P 1500 index ETFs. Compare their coverage, verify current fees and confirm elections are available in the account.

Choose among the Trump Account’s announced investments by deciding how much of the U.S. stock market you want the account to track—not by trying to predict which fund will perform best. Treasury named SPYM as the initial default, with IVV, VTI, SPTM and ITOT as additional options. The lineup is U.S.-equity-index focused; none of the announced choices should be treated as a guaranteed return or a complete portfolio across all asset classes. As of October 9, 2026, the official information cited here does not confirm that the account interface already allows investment elections, so check the official account interface and current Treasury instructions before expecting to switch.

Start with the index, not the ticker

The five announced funds differ mainly in the U.S. stock-market index they track. SPYM and IVV follow the S&P 500; VTI and ITOT follow the total U.S. stock market; SPTM follows the S&P 1500 Composite. That makes the practical choice a question of index coverage and the fund’s current costs, not a sound basis for predicting which one will earn more.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Treasury announced the initial default and additional options on July 1, 2026. Its announcement said account holders would be able to elect the additional funds when allocation functionality became available, with a further announcement to follow. The announcement of a fund is not proof that you can select it today. Verify availability in the official account interface and current Treasury instructions before making plans around a switch.

It helps to separate three questions that can otherwise get mixed together. First, which index do you want the account to track? Second, what are the fund’s current expenses, and does it meet the account’s applicable eligibility rules? Third, can you actually elect that fund through the account now? An answer to one question does not settle the others. For example, an index may fit your preference, but the fund still needs to be available through the account process.

Compare the announced investment options

Fund Index tracked How to think about its coverage Role in Treasury’s announced lineup
SPYM — State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF S&P 500 U.S. large-company index exposure Initial default
IVV — iShares Core S&P 500 ETF S&P 500 U.S. large-company index exposure, like SPYM Additional announced option
VTI — Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF Total U.S. stock market Broader U.S. market exposure than an S&P 500-only index Additional announced option
ITOT — iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF Total U.S. stock market Broader U.S. market exposure than an S&P 500-only index, like VTI Additional announced option
SPTM — State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 1500 Composite Stock Market ETF S&P 1500 Composite Exposure to the U.S. companies represented by that index; distinct from the S&P 500 and total-market indexes Additional announced option

The index descriptions and lineup are from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s July 1, 2026 announcement, “Treasury Announces Investment Lineup for Trump Accounts.” The announcement identifies the index each fund tracks, but does not establish a performance ranking. In particular, having a longer index name or a broader market label does not mean a fund will outperform another.

Index breadth is about which U.S. companies an index represents, not a guarantee of how a fund will behave. The S&P 500 choices are the two named funds tracking that index. The total-market choices track a broader slice of U.S. equities than an S&P 500-only index. SPTM tracks a separate S&P 1500 Composite index. These descriptions help you identify the exposure, but they do not make the funds interchangeable in every respect or establish which one is preferable for a particular child.

Also distinguish between two funds that track the same named index and two funds that track different indexes. SPYM and IVV belong in the first comparison; VTI and ITOT belong in another. The shared index makes the index preference similar within each pair, so current expenses and practical availability become relevant points to check. A total-market fund and an S&P 500 fund, by contrast, represent different index coverage choices. Do not infer that one has a better return simply because its index label sounds wider.

Use this decision framework

If you want the S&P 500 index

SPYM and IVV track the same index. If your preference is specifically S&P 500 exposure, compare those two using their current fund expenses and the options actually available in the account. Treasury designated SPYM as the initial default; that status alone is not evidence that it will produce better results than IVV.

The default designation answers what Treasury named for the initial allocation; it does not answer whether a particular family should prefer it, whether it is the lowest-cost option at a later date, or whether election tools are currently available. If you have no reason to favor one S&P 500 fund over the other, check the current fee disclosure and account instructions rather than treating the default label as a forecast or endorsement of future performance.

If you want a total-U.S.-market index

VTI and ITOT both track the total U.S. stock market. They are the announced choices to examine if you prefer that index rather than an S&P 500-only index. Compare their current expenses and account availability; the shared index label is not a reason to assume their returns or costs are identical.

The key distinction is the index exposure you intend to use: the total U.S. stock market rather than an S&P 500-only index. Treasury’s list does not say that the total-market pair is safer, more appropriate for every child, or certain to do better over a long period. If this is your preferred category, compare VTI and ITOT on the same practical checks you would use for any pair: current fund expenses, eligibility under current account rules, and whether the account lets you select it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you prefer the S&P 1500 Composite

SPTM tracks the S&P 1500 Composite. Choose it only if that is the index exposure you intend to hold and it is available for election in the account. The announcement does not say that SPTM is a middle ground that will perform between an S&P 500 fund and a total-market fund.

Because SPTM is the only named option in this particular index category, there is no second S&P 1500 fund in Treasury’s announced list to compare against it by shared index. You can still check its current expenses and eligibility, and compare its index category with the S&P 500 and total-market categories. Avoid turning that comparison into a prediction: the index names alone do not provide a basis for estimating future returns.

If you have no preference or cannot make an election

SPYM was named as the initial default. Do not assume that you can replace it until the official interface or Treasury instructions show that an election can be made. Also do not assume from the available announcement alone what will happen in every account if an election is unavailable or not submitted; use the account’s current instructions for the actual allocation rules.

If the selection screen is not available or does not display the fund you expected, pause rather than trying to arrange the purchase outside the account. The investment choices are securities held within this account, and the official account channel is the relevant place to make an allocation. An announced option and an operational choice are different things; the current account process controls what you can actually do.

Check fees against the proposed eligibility limit

The IRS’s August 20, 2026 announcement describes proposed regulations that generally define eligible investments as unleveraged mutual funds or ETFs tracking an equity index of primarily U.S. companies, with annual fund fees and expenses no higher than 0.1% of the account balance. This is proposed guidance, not a statement here that final regulations have taken effect.

The 0.1% figure is an eligibility ceiling described in the proposed rules, not a ranking of the five funds and not a promise that every fund below the ceiling is available in a particular account. The cited Treasury announcement does not provide current expense ratios for the named funds. Check current fund materials for each fund’s annual expenses and follow the account’s current eligibility rules; do not treat an old or undated fee figure as current.

Fees matter because they reduce what remains invested, but the available figures do not support a cost ranking among SPYM, IVV, VTI, SPTM and ITOT. Compare the latest disclosed expenses on a like-for-like basis, then choose based on the index you want and the choices the account permits.

When checking a fee, make sure you are looking at the annual fund expenses for the specific ETF, rather than a fee for a different share class, product, or account service. Use a dated current fund document or the fund provider’s current disclosure. The 0.1% threshold in the IRS announcement is expressed as an annual-fee limit relative to account balance under proposed rules; it is not a statement that every cost an investor might encounter is necessarily captured by that figure. Follow the actual current account and final applicable rules when they are available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that the proposed ceiling means the five choices all have exactly the same costs, or that one meets the rules simply because it appears in the July lineup. The lineup announcement and the proposed eligibility definition serve different purposes: Treasury named the funds it planned to offer, while the IRS announcement described proposed criteria for eligible investments. For a decision today, look for the fund’s current expense information and the current account’s eligibility information rather than filling in missing numbers from memory.

Understand the time horizon and account context

A Trump Account is a new type of individual retirement account for a child, according to the IRS’s “Trump Accounts” page, accessed October 9, 2026. The IRS describes a growth period that ends on December 31 of the calendar year in which the child turns 17, and says funds may be invested only in eligible investments during that period. This is a long time horizon, but it does not remove the possibility of losses in stock investments or make one of the announced indexes certain to be suitable for every family.

The end date matters as a boundary in the account rules, not as a promise that the money will be needed on that day or that a particular fund will be appropriate until then. The IRS description says eligible investments may be used during the growth period. It does not give a basis to invent a different investment menu, a guaranteed withdrawal date, or a personal recommendation based solely on the child’s age. Keep the time horizon in view, but make the index choice using the information the account actually provides.

The account is elected through IRS Form 4547. The IRS says qualifying U.S. citizens born from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028, with a valid Social Security number, are eligible for a one-time $1,000 pilot contribution. Treasury reported that automatic enrollment was completed on October 1, 2026. A parent or guardian must claim an account to manage it and to allow contributions from family, friends and employers; Treasury also says an account must be claimed for the child to receive the one-time seed contribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These account steps and the fund choice are related but not interchangeable: an announced investment menu does not itself claim an account or establish that its election tools are live. Follow the current official claim and account instructions, then use the account interface for any allocation choices it actually offers.

If you are sorting out eligibility and investment choice at the same time, handle them as separate checks. The IRS’s eligibility description for the pilot contribution is limited to qualifying U.S. citizens born within the stated date range who have a valid Social Security number. Form 4547 is the election mechanism identified by the IRS. Treasury’s account-claiming update explains that a parent or guardian must claim an account to manage it and to enable contributions. None of those points tells you which index to choose; they establish account access and contribution context.

How to make the comparison without guessing

  1. Write down the index category first. Decide whether you want the S&P 500, total U.S. market, or S&P 1500 Composite exposure. This narrows the announced list without relying on predictions.
  2. Compare within the category. For S&P 500 exposure, compare SPYM with IVV; for total-market exposure, compare VTI with ITOT. SPTM is the announced S&P 1500 option. Use the exact fund name and ticker shown in the account.
  3. Look up current costs. Check the latest expense information for the exact ETF. Do not rely on a fee figure without a date, and do not mistake the proposed 0.1% eligibility ceiling for a specific fund’s expense ratio.
  4. Confirm eligibility and access. Read the current account instructions to see which eligible investments can be selected. The July announcement said Treasury would announce when allocation functionality became available; the official sources cited as of October 9 do not confirm whether it is live.
  5. Review what the screen says before submitting. Confirm the ticker, fund name, and allocation presented by the official interface. If the choice is unclear, use official account guidance rather than making a separate ETF purchase.
  6. Keep a record of the decision. Save or note the confirmation and the instructions you relied on, if the account provides them. This is a practical way to remember what you elected and what the account displayed; it is not a substitute for the account’s official record.

This process is deliberately modest: it helps avoid choosing based on a ticker’s familiarity, a fund’s brand, or a presumed return forecast. It also avoids treating the five-fund list as if every account necessarily provides all five choices at every moment. The index, fee disclosure, eligibility rules, and live account options are the relevant information to compare.

What not to infer from the menu

  • Do not read a return forecast into index breadth. The named indexes cover U.S. equities in different ways, but the cited announcements do not say which will do better.
  • Do not treat the options as risk-free. Stock-index funds can lose value; a long period before the account’s growth period ends does not guarantee a positive balance.
  • Do not call the lineup a complete diversified portfolio. The choices described are U.S.-equity-index focused, not a menu spanning all asset classes.
  • Do not confuse Treasury’s announcement with a live election. Confirm current functionality and instructions before assuming you can choose or change a fund.
  • Do not buy an ETF outside the account to make its allocation. These are securities offered as investments within the Trump Account; use the official account channel for account elections.
  • Do not treat proposed regulations as final rules. The IRS described the 0.1% fee limit in proposed regulations in its August 20, 2026 announcement. Keep that status clear when applying the eligibility information.
  • Do not assume a long horizon eliminates risk. The growth period has a stated end point, but the sources do not promise an outcome or say that all families should choose the same index.

A practical checklist before selecting

  1. Claim and access the account. A parent or guardian needs to claim it to manage it and enable the contribution and seed-contribution processes described by Treasury.
  2. Read the current account instructions. Confirm whether investment elections are available and which funds can actually be selected; the July 2026 announcement is not confirmation of live functionality.
  3. Choose your index preference. Decide between S&P 500 exposure (SPYM or IVV), total U.S. market exposure (VTI or ITOT), or S&P 1500 Composite exposure (SPTM).
  4. Verify costs and eligibility. Check current fund expense information and current account rules. Treat the IRS’s 0.1% annual-fee threshold as proposed guidance as described in its August 2026 announcement.
  5. Submit only through the account’s official process. Confirm the selected allocation in the account after completing any available election steps.

The IRS’s August 20, 2026 announcement quoted CEO Frank J. Bisignano: “Funds deposited in Trump Accounts enable American children to start investing now and enjoy years of compound earnings for their future college, retirement and other needs.” That describes the purpose of getting started, not a promise of earnings or a reason to choose one named fund over another. Use the account’s actual rules and current fund information to make the selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose investments for my child’s Trump Account?

Start by choosing the index exposure you want: SPYM or IVV track the S&P 500, VTI or ITOT track the total U.S. stock market, and SPTM tracks the S&P 1500 Composite. Then compare current fund expenses, confirm current eligibility and check whether the official account interface allows that election. The announced lineup does not establish which fund will perform best.

Which Trump Account investment should I pick?

There is no performance winner identified in Treasury’s announcement. A reasonable comparison begins with the index you prefer, then considers current expenses and actual availability in the account. SPYM is the named initial default, but that designation is not a prediction that it will outperform the other choices.

Can I switch from SPYM to another Trump Account fund now?

Treasury’s July 1, 2026 announcement said additional choices would be electable when allocation functionality became available and that it would announce when that functionality was ready. The official sources cited as of October 9, 2026 do not confirm whether the election feature is live. Check the current account interface and Treasury instructions.

What is the difference between SPYM and IVV?

Both track the S&P 500, so they represent the same announced index category. Compare their current fund expenses and whether each is available in the account. Treasury named SPYM as the initial default and IVV as an additional option, but did not identify a performance ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between VTI and ITOT?

Both track the total U.S. stock market. The available information does not establish a return or cost ranking between them. Check current expense disclosures and the account’s current selection options.

Does the 0.1% limit mean each fund costs 0.1%?

No. The IRS described a maximum annual fund-fee-and-expense threshold of 0.1% of balance in proposed regulations for eligible investments. That is an eligibility ceiling in proposed guidance, not the expense ratio of each fund. Check dated current fund materials and current account rules.

Who can receive the $1,000 Trump Account pilot contribution?

The IRS says the one-time pilot contribution is for qualifying U.S. citizens born from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028 who have a valid Social Security number. Treasury says the account must be claimed for the child to receive the seed contribution.

Does a parent or guardian have to claim a Trump Account?

Treasury says a parent or guardian must claim the account to manage it and to allow contributions from family, friends and employers. Treasury also says the account must be claimed for the child to receive the one-time $1,000 seed contribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose by index exposure first, then verify the current expense information, eligibility rules and actual account availability. SPYM is Treasury’s announced initial default; SPYM and IVV track the S&P 500, VTI and ITOT track the total U.S. stock market, and SPTM tracks the S&P 1500 Composite. None is a guaranteed winner, and the official sources cited as of October 9, 2026 do not confirm that election functionality is live. Use current official account instructions before making an allocation.
