For a child, choose an EPA-registered skin-applied repellent whose label covers the pests you expect, your child’s age, and the protection time you need. Then apply it exactly as directed.
What to check before choosing a repellent
- Look for EPA registration. Check the product label for an EPA registration number. EPA says registration means the company provided technical information about effectiveness; it does not replace reading the label. See the EPA’s safe-use guidance.
- Match the product to the pests. Read the label to see whether it names mosquitoes, ticks, or both. A mosquito product should not be assumed to protect against ticks.
- Check age directions and application limits. A child-focused name or package does not establish that the product is suitable for every age. Follow the current label for that exact product.
- Compare active ingredient, concentration, and labeled duration. CDC notes that higher concentrations generally provide longer protection, but duration varies by product. Use the label’s instructions rather than assuming one ingredient or concentration guarantees a set number of hours.
EPA-registered skin-applied repellents may use DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. Ingredient and concentration alone do not establish that one product is best for every child or outing. See the EPA list of skin-applied repellent ingredients.
Which ingredients can be used for children?
DEET
EPA says DEET products may be used on children without an age restriction, provided the product label is followed. The label still governs how and where to apply the particular product. EPA’s DEET guidance explains this age distinction.
OLE and PMD
CDC advises against using OLE or PMD products on children younger than 3. EPA describes a narrow label-specific distinction: certain OLE-only products at concentrations of 30% or less have no under-three restriction. That exception should not be extended to every OLE or PMD product. Check the exact product label and follow current public-health advice. See CDC Yellow Book guidance and EPA’s label guidance.

Picaridin, IR3535, and 2-undecanone
These are also active ingredients used in EPA-registered skin-applied repellents. Their suitability for a particular child depends on the exact product’s age directions and application instructions, not just the ingredient name.
How to apply repellent to a child
- Follow the product label and do not let children apply repellent themselves.
- Keep it off a child’s hands, eyes, and mouth, as well as cuts and irritated skin.
- For the face, an adult should put repellent on their own hands first, then apply it to the child’s face.
- After returning indoors, wash treated skin and clothing, as EPA advises.
EPA says protection can vary with perspiration, water exposure, temperature, and a person’s attractiveness to insects. A label’s duration is therefore not a guarantee of identical protection in every condition. CDC’s mosquito-bite prevention guidance also emphasizes following label instructions.

Use clothing and netting as additional barriers
For babies and children, CDC recommends clothing that covers arms and legs and mosquito netting over strollers or baby carriers. These measures can add a physical barrier; they are not a substitute for repellent when repellent is appropriate for the child and situation. For tick-specific prevention advice, see CDC’s tick-bite prevention guidance.
