Choose the memory generation your processor and motherboard support: desktop DDR4 and DDR5 modules are physically keyed differently and cannot be interchanged. AMD AM4 uses DDR4, AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851 use DDR5, while Intel LGA1700 boards come in DDR4 and DDR5 versions. For a new build, compare the full CPU, motherboard and memory cost—not just the RAM kit—and weigh compatibility, performance needs and whether you can reuse memory you already own.

Start with compatibility, not advertised speed

The motherboard determines which memory generation fits. A DDR4 board needs DDR4 modules; a DDR5 board needs DDR5. The different physical notches prevent swapping one type for the other, so a memory kit alone cannot convert a DDR4 system to DDR5.

Check the exact motherboard model and its memory support list before buying. If you already own the board, its specifications settle the question. If you are selecting a platform, confirm the processor and board support the same generation as well.

Which CPU platforms support DDR4 or DDR5?

Platform Memory generation What to verify
AMD AM4 DDR4 Check the CPU and motherboard specifications, including supported capacity and memory configurations.
AMD AM5 DDR5 Check the exact motherboard specifications and memory support list.
Intel LGA1851 DDR5 Check the exact board and processor memory specifications.
Intel LGA1700 DDR4 or DDR5, depending on the motherboard The board is specifically a DDR4 or DDR5 model. Confirm its exact model and supported memory generation.

Do not infer the memory type from the processor name alone, especially for LGA1700. A processor may be used with either generation, but the particular motherboard supports only its specified type.

  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

What difference can DDR5 make in gaming?

A July 2026 Tom’s Hardware comparison on Intel LGA1700 found roughly 9–14% lower average gaming performance with DDR4 across the tested CPU comparisons. The test used an RTX 5090 at 1080p and a 15-game suite. Individual games varied, and the result is not a prediction for every processor, graphics card, resolution, game or productivity workload. Read Tom’s Hardware’s comparison.

This result is most useful as evidence that memory generation can affect performance in a particular configuration; it is not a universal performance premium to apply to every build. Consider the games and workloads you actually run, and compare complete build options rather than treating the test percentage as a guaranteed gain.

How to compare the real cost of two builds

There is no durable, globally applicable price winner. Memory prices change, and the cost of choosing a generation may include the motherboard and processor as well as the kit. Compare current local prices for the complete configurations you are considering.

  • CPU and motherboard: Confirm compatibility and include both in the total.
  • Memory reuse: If you already own a suitable DDR4 kit, a compatible DDR4 platform may let you keep using it.
  • Workload: Decide whether gaming or another workload makes measured performance relevant to your choice.
  • Capacity and configuration: Check the motherboard’s supported capacities and module arrangements.
  • Upgrade path: Moving from DDR4 to DDR5 requires a DDR5-compatible motherboard and processor, not just new memory modules.

Tom’s Hardware notes that memory pricing is highly volatile and does not set a fixed price-to-performance ratio for its hierarchy. Treat any price comparison as local and time-sensitive. See its pricing qualification.

Check supported speeds and configurations

A kit’s advertised speed does not by itself establish what your system will run. Actual operation depends on the processor, motherboard, number of modules and selected settings. Confirm the exact configuration with the motherboard maker’s memory support information.

Intel’s 13th-generation processor datasheet lists DDR4 at 3200 MT/s and DDR5 entries from 4000 to 5600 MT/s in the configurations shown. Those are documented support timings, not a promise that every processor, board and kit will run at every listed rate—or at a higher marketed overclocked rate. Consult Intel’s datasheet.

You own a suitable DDR4 kit and have a tight budget

Consider a compatible DDR4 motherboard if reusing the kit lowers the total platform cost and meets your needs. Compare the full CPU, board and memory prices rather than assuming the older kit automatically makes the build cheaper.

You are targeting high-refresh gaming on LGA1700

DDR5 had an advantage in the cited 1080p comparison. Use it as a result from that specific CPU, GPU and game suite, not as a guaranteed gain at other resolutions or with different hardware.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Identify the exact CPU platform and motherboard model.
  2. Confirm whether that board supports DDR4 or DDR5; do not rely on the processor name alone.
  3. Check the board’s memory support list for capacity, module arrangement and supported settings.
  4. Compare total current local prices for CPU, motherboard and memory, accounting for any kit you can reuse.
  5. Match the choice to your workload and upgrade plans; do not treat one benchmark as universal.
