Start with performance at your target resolution, then weigh memory, ray tracing and upscaling support, streaming and editing features, software compatibility, and whether the specific card fits your system.
Start with the models, prices, and work you actually have
A brand-level verdict hides the factors that determine whether a GPU is a good buy: the particular model, its price where you live, how it performs in your games and applications, and what your PC can support. Make a shortlist of specific cards, then compare them under the settings and workloads you expect to use.

For a personal-finance decision, compare the complete purchase in context: current local price, performance for your intended tasks, and any system-fit requirements that could add cost or rule out a card. A performance-per-dollar claim is only useful when it reflects the cards and prices actually available to you.

Compare independent results in those games, separating standard rendering (raster performance) from ray tracing.
- Streaming or recording: Identify your software, destination service, desired codec, resolution, and frame rate before choosing based on an encoder feature.
- Creative work: Name the application and the tasks you perform in it—such as editing, effects, export, or rendering—and seek benchmarks for that specific workflow.
- Mixed use: Give priority to the task that matters most or is hardest to do another way. A card that performs well in games may not be the best choice for an essential application.
Which GPU is better for gaming at your resolution?
Compare performance in the games you play
Use independent tests that match your target resolution and settings as closely as possible. A result from one game, resolution, or GPU model is not a reliable brand-wide ranking. Where ray tracing matters to you, compare those results separately from performance without ray tracing.

Price changes the conclusion: compare the cost of each specific card currently available in your market against its relevant performance. A review’s value judgment reflects its tested products and price context, not necessarily the prices you see today.
Account for memory and image-quality features
Memory capacity matters in relation to the games, resolution, settings, and other work you expect to run. AMD’s current RX 9070-series product examples list 16 GB of GDDR6 for both the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070; that specification alone does not establish how either card compares with a particular NVIDIA model in your workload.

Evaluate upscaling and frame-generation options by checking whether the games you play support them and whether you like the resulting image quality and latency. Support and adoption can vary by game and GPU generation, so do not treat a feature name as a guarantee that it is available in your entire library.

How to read a current model comparison
Tom’s Guide’s July 21, 2026 review compared the RX 9070 XT with the RTX 5070 Ti. Its review summary described the Radeon as offering “roughly 95% of the performance of Nvidia’s card” at “80% of the cost,” and characterized it as strong gaming value in the tested context. Those are the reviewer’s test-specific summary figures, not a promise about current local prices or results in every game. The same review noted ray-tracing and feature-support trade-offs. Check its detailed methods and benchmark tables before applying the comparison to your own games.

What should streamers check before choosing a GPU?
Both AMD and NVIDIA document hardware video-encoding features. NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series comparison lists ninth-generation NVENC and AV1 encode support. AMD describes AV1 support and a re-architected encoder for RX 9000-series cards. These are vendor specifications; they do not establish which brand delivers better image quality at identical settings.
Before treating a codec or encoder as a deciding advantage, confirm that your streaming or recording software supports it, that your destination accepts the intended mode, and that your upload connection and settings suit your stream. NVIDIA’s current streaming guide says AV1 livestreaming is supported at 4K60 on YouTube and Discord; this is NVIDIA’s published compatibility statement, and service rules can change.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
NVIDIA also says its RTX 50-series AV1 encoding is 43% more efficient than H.264. Treat that as NVIDIA’s stated comparison, not as independent testing that settles stream quality or performance for every setup. For a practical comparison, check the settings you can use in your software and service, then look for independent tests at those same settings.

“Creative work” covers different software paths, so one general-purpose benchmark cannot establish the better card for every creator. Check the exact application, task, effects, render engine, plugins, codecs, and driver requirements that apply to your projects. Then look for benchmarks of that application and workload rather than assuming that support or speed in one program predicts performance in another.

AMD documents creator workflows and hardware-accelerated video effects, as well as HEVC, H.264, and AV1 encode/decode capabilities. NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK documentation lists NVENC and NVDEC uses in broadcasting, transcoding, and other video workflows, with H.264, HEVC, and AV1 encode support. These descriptions establish documented features, not a neutral head-to-head performance result.
If your work depends on 3D rendering, AI, or another GPU-compute-heavy task, first verify that the specific application supports the card’s backend and features. The available evidence does not establish a universal AMD-versus-NVIDIA winner for those workloads; use benchmarks for your intended software and project.

GPU-family names do not tell you the dimensions, power connections, cooling design, or power-supply requirements of every partner card. Verify those details on the listing or manufacturer specifications for the precise model you plan to buy. Check case clearance and your existing system before treating a low price as a usable option. The sources cited here do not establish dimensions or power requirements for every SKU.
Likewise, use current local retailer prices rather than manufacturer positioning or a review’s historical price comparison. Confirm that the listed card is the exact model you intend to buy, since specifications and physical fit can differ between board-partner versions of a GPU.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Set your requirements. Write down your main games and applications, target resolution, settings, frame-rate expectations, streaming destination, and creative tasks.
- Shortlist exact models. Compare cards that meet those requirements and are actually available to you, not just AMD and NVIDIA as abstract brands.
- Match evidence to the workload. Use independent gaming tests at comparable settings; for streaming and creation, check software and codec support and seek benchmarks for the specific task.
- Compare current prices. Recheck local street prices before deciding; a review’s value result may no longer match the market you are shopping in.
- Confirm system compatibility. Verify the chosen card’s dimensions, power connections, cooling, and power requirements against your case and system.
- Choose by your priority. For a mixed-use PC, favor the card that best serves your most important or least replaceable workload at a price and system fit you can accept.
