How to Choose Between a New Fund Offer and an Existing Index Fund

A ₹10 NFO is not automatically cheaper than an existing index fund. Compare the benchmark, current costs, tracking evidence and scheme terms.

Do not choose a New Fund Offer (NFO) just because its units are offered at ₹10. Compare the scheme’s index and mandate, costs, tracking behavior, operating history and any restrictions. An existing index fund has a record you can examine; a new scheme does not yet have its own operating history.

If you are asking, “Which is a better option, investing in a newly listed mutual fund or in an existing fund?”, there is no answer based on launch price alone. The useful comparison is between the specific schemes: what they track, what they charge, what evidence is available about their operations and what terms apply.

What an NFO is—and what changes after it closes

SEBI defines a New Fund Offer as the first-time subscription offering of a new mutual-fund scheme by an asset management company. During the offer period, units are typically sold at a fixed price, commonly ₹10 in India. SEBI’s investor NFO page, accessed on 2026-10-09, describes ₹10 as a typical offer price—not as a measure of performance or value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the offer closes, units become available for purchase or redemption at the prevailing net asset value (NAV), subject to the scheme’s terms. That change matters: the NFO offer period is a particular subscription window, not a promise that investors will always be able to buy at ₹10. Once the offer is over, the applicable NAV and scheme conditions govern transactions.

Some NFOs, including certain close-ended funds, may have a predefined lock-in period. Do not assume that every NFO has the same access or exit arrangements. The actual offer dates, investment mandate, costs, subscription terms and restrictions depend on the scheme documents; check the current offer document and scheme information document rather than assuming every NFO works the same way.

Likewise, “newly listed” is sometimes used informally to describe a recently launched scheme, but the meaningful facts are its offer period, current availability and applicable terms. Confirm those details in the scheme documents. The label itself does not tell you whether an investment fits your portfolio or how the scheme will track its benchmark.

Why a ₹10 NAV does not make an NFO cheaper

NAV is the per-unit value of a scheme’s assets after liabilities are accounted for. A lower NAV means an investor receives more units for a given amount; it does not by itself mean the investor is buying the underlying investments at a discount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, ignoring charges and rounding, ₹1,000 invested at a NAV of ₹10 buys 100 units. At a NAV of ₹90, it buys about 11.11 units. If either investment’s value rises by 10%, the investor’s holding rises by 10% in either case. The number of units differs; the percentage return depends on the change in value, not the starting unit count.

The same arithmetic applies in reverse: a lower unit count is not a disadvantage, and a higher unit count is not an advantage. What matters to the investment’s percentage change is how the value changes from the amount invested. The offer price does not tell you which index the fund follows, its costs, its tracking behavior or whether it has an operating record.

SEBI’s Investor Education Programme on Mutual Funds states: “Likewise, lower or higher NAVs of similar type schemes of different mutual funds have no relevance.” It specifically says that an equity-oriented scheme offered at ₹10 should not be preferred over an existing scheme available at ₹90 solely because of that difference. Compare the investments and scheme terms, not the launch price.

Compare the scheme’s mandate before comparing its age

For an index fund, identify the index it tracks and the exposure that index represents. Two funds described as index funds need not track the same index or provide the same portfolio exposure. The relevant question is whether the scheme’s stated mandate fits the role you want it to serve—not whether it is new or has a lower NAV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SEBI’s investor material explains that index-fund returns are aligned with the underlying index less costs such as the expense ratio. Read the scheme documents to confirm the benchmark and the mandate, and avoid inferring the fund’s holdings or risk from its name alone. A familiar-sounding name is not a substitute for checking the actual index and stated exposure.

This is especially important when comparing unlike schemes. If an NFO tracks a different index from an existing fund, the comparison is not simply “new versus old.” First decide whether each index exposure serves the intended portfolio role. A difference in mandate may explain why the schemes behave differently; a difference in NAV does not.

Side-by-side comparison: what you can assess

Decision factor New index-fund NFO Existing index fund What to check
Index and mandate Specified in the scheme documents; the scheme has no operating record yet. Specified in the scheme documents and reflected in its operating record. Which index it tracks and whether that exposure fits your intended portfolio role.
Expense ratio and other charges Current amounts depend on the scheme documents; not stated as a general figure. Current amounts depend on the scheme documents; not stated as a general figure. Expense ratio and any other applicable charges, using current documents for each scheme.
Tracking behavior No scheme-level tracking record exists before the scheme begins operating. Historical tracking behavior can be examined over relevant periods. How closely the fund has followed its stated benchmark and what its documents report.
Operating history No pre-launch operating record for this scheme. A record of actual operations is available, although past results do not promise future performance. Use the available history as evidence about this scheme, not as a guarantee.
Liquidity and restrictions Offer and exit terms depend on the scheme; some close-ended NFOs may have a predefined lock-in. Terms depend on the scheme and are not established by its age alone. Whether it is open-ended or close-ended, and the current lock-in, exit and subscription conditions.

Evaluate costs and tracking together

Check the current costs

Find the expense ratio and other applicable charges in the current scheme documents for both options. Do not assume an NFO is less expensive because it is launching at ₹10, or that an established fund costs more because it has been operating longer. The actual comparison requires current figures for the specific schemes; no general fee amount can settle it.

Costs matter because they reduce what remains for investors relative to the underlying index. Compare the stated charges on a like-for-like basis, and make sure you are looking at the relevant scheme and terms rather than relying on a launch announcement or an old figure. If one scheme’s costs are not clear from the information you have, verify them in its current documents rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Costs are one part of the comparison, not a shortcut for choosing. A lower stated expense ratio does not tell you whether the index exposure is the one you want, whether the scheme’s terms suit you or—when a fund is already operating—how closely it has followed its benchmark. Weigh the same categories for each candidate rather than treating the ₹10 offer price as a proxy for value.

Use a track record as evidence, not a promise

For an existing index fund, examine how closely it has followed its benchmark over relevant periods. SEBI identifies tracking error as a difference that can arise from expenses or operational inefficiencies. Tracking behavior gives you information about the fund’s experience following its index; it does not establish that the same behavior will continue.

An NFO cannot provide a scheme-level history of actual tracking before it starts operating. That absence is not proof that the new fund will perform poorly, but it means you cannot assess its own past tracking record at launch. Do not substitute another scheme’s history for the NFO’s record: another scheme may provide context, but it is not evidence of the new scheme’s own operations.

Keep the benchmark in view while reviewing historical evidence. The question is how closely the existing fund followed its stated index, not whether it had a particular NAV or whether a different scheme delivered a particular result. Past results are historical information, not a promise of future performance.

A practical decision process

  1. Define the exposure you want. Identify the intended portfolio role and the index exposure that would serve it. If the NFO and existing fund track different indexes, first decide whether both exposures fit your purpose; the NAV comparison does not answer that question.
  2. Read the scheme documents. Confirm each scheme’s benchmark and mandate, then check current costs, offer or subscription terms, liquidity and restrictions. For an NFO, use its current offer documents; for an existing scheme, check its current scheme information and terms.
  3. Compare ongoing costs. Record the expense ratio and other applicable charges for the specific schemes. If a figure is unavailable or unclear, verify it in the current documents rather than estimating from the ₹10 offer price.
  4. Review available tracking evidence. For the existing scheme, examine its benchmark tracking over periods relevant to your decision. For the NFO, recognize that its own operating history is not yet available.
  5. Check access and exit conditions. Establish whether each scheme is open-ended or close-ended, and whether a lock-in, exit condition or other restriction applies. Confirm the terms in current documents before subscribing or investing.
  6. Make the choice on scheme merits. If the NFO offers an exposure you actually want, compare its mandate and terms with suitable existing options while accounting for the missing operating record. If novelty is its only apparent advantage, that alone does not establish a reason to choose it.

A simple comparison note can make these checks easier to apply. For each scheme, write down its exact index and mandate, the current expense ratio and other applicable charges, the available tracking evidence, its operating-history limitations and its access or exit conditions. Mark which facts come from the current scheme documents. This keeps the decision focused on observable differences and makes missing information visible instead of encouraging assumptions.

Then separate the questions. First, does the exposure fit the portfolio role you have in mind? Second, are the costs and scheme terms acceptable to you? Third, what evidence exists about tracking behavior? The first two questions can be asked of both a new and existing scheme, while the third has a different answer at launch: the existing scheme has its own history to review, and the NFO does not.

When an NFO may merit consideration

A new scheme may be worth assessing when its stated mandate provides an exposure you want and you have reviewed its costs, operating terms and restrictions. The key distinction is that the scheme is new, not that its units are more valuable or cheaper at the offer price. At launch, the lack of scheme-specific operating history is a real information gap to include in the decision.

Novelty alone is not a merit. Ask what the NFO adds in terms of the index exposure you want, and verify that claim in its scheme documents. If it does not provide a distinct or desired exposure, being newly offered is not by itself a reason to subscribe. If it does offer an exposure you want, make the comparison with that benefit and the information still unavailable at launch in mind.

When an existing fund may be easier to assess

An existing scheme lets you inspect a record of actual operations, including historical tracking behavior against its benchmark. You can also review its current costs and terms. That additional evidence can make evaluation more concrete, but it is historical evidence rather than an assurance about future results. An older scheme is not automatically the better fit if its index exposure or terms do not match what you need.

History is useful only when it is relevant to the specific scheme and its stated benchmark. It can help you assess observed tracking, but it cannot remove the need to check current costs, mandate and restrictions. Nor does an existing fund’s higher NAV make it expensive in the sense implied by the ₹10 misconception. Compare the scheme’s features and evidence rather than its age or unit price alone.

What to verify before investing

  • The exact index and mandate, and whether the exposure suits the intended portfolio role.
  • The current expense ratio and any other applicable charges.
  • For an existing fund, its observed tracking behavior over relevant periods.
  • Whether the scheme is open-ended or close-ended, along with any lock-in, exit or subscription conditions.
  • That the information comes from the current scheme documents rather than assumptions based on NAV or age.
  • For an NFO, the actual offer dates and terms, and the fact that it has no scheme-level operating record before launch.

This is general educational information for investors in India, not an individualized recommendation. SEBI’s investor education material advises considering scheme merit and track record rather than NAV level; past results remain historical and do not guarantee future performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is a better option: investing in a newly listed mutual fund or an existing fund?

Neither is automatically better. Compare the specific schemes’ index and mandate, current costs, applicable terms and restrictions. An existing fund also has a record of actual operations and tracking behavior to examine; a new scheme does not yet have its own scheme-level history. Use that difference as one factor, not as a guarantee about future results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an NFO at ₹10 cheaper than an existing index fund with a higher NAV?

No. SEBI’s Investor Education Programme on Mutual Funds says lower or higher NAVs of similar-type schemes have no relevance by themselves. A ₹1,000 investment buys more units at a ₹10 NAV than at a ₹90 NAV, but the unit count does not determine the percentage return. Compare the mandate, costs, tracking behavior and terms instead.

What should I compare between an NFO and an existing index fund?

Check the exact index and exposure, the expense ratio and other applicable charges, tracking behavior against the benchmark where a history exists, the scheme’s operating record and its liquidity or restriction terms. Use current scheme documents for current offer dates, costs, subscription terms, lock-ins and exit conditions.

Can I check tracking error for an NFO before it launches?

Not as a record of that scheme’s own operations. Before it begins operating, an NFO has no scheme-level tracking history. For an existing index fund, review how closely it has followed its stated benchmark over relevant periods. SEBI identifies expenses or operational inefficiencies as possible causes of tracking error.

Does an existing fund’s track record guarantee similar future tracking or returns?

No. Its history is evidence of actual past operations and can make the scheme easier to assess, but it is not a promise of future performance. Review it alongside the current mandate, costs and scheme terms.

Are all NFOs available for purchase or redemption after the offer closes?

After an NFO closes, units become available at the prevailing NAV subject to the scheme’s terms. Some NFOs, including certain close-ended funds, may have a predefined lock-in. Check the current offer and scheme information documents to confirm availability, lock-in, exit and subscription conditions for the particular scheme.

The Bottom Line

Choose on scheme merits, not on whether the offer price is ₹10. Confirm the index exposure and mandate, compare current costs and terms, and use an existing fund’s tracking history as evidence rather than a promise. An NFO may offer an exposure you want, but it has no scheme-specific operating record at launch; check its current documents and account for that information gap.
