For Indian sellers, the key question is not just whether an e-commerce platform calculates tax. It is whether the platform or a connected service can produce the invoice documents and records the business needs, with the right fields and tax presentation. Shopify says it does not create a GST-compliant bill for Indian merchants, while WooCommerce offers configurable tax and invoice tools but does not establish that a default setup meets every Indian GST requirement. Compare the complete workflow against current rules, then test it with your own products, customer locations, and transaction types.
Separate tax calculation, invoicing, and filing
These are related but distinct functions. A checkout may calculate tax; an invoicing tool may generate a customer document; and accounting or filing systems may use sales records and exports. Neither a platform’s tax setting nor its invoice template decides what tax a particular seller must charge. WooCommerce explicitly says its tax service does not determine where a business has a tax obligation or file returns. Shopify advises merchants who are unsure about registration or tax rates to consult a local tax expert.
Assess each function separately. A useful platform choice is one whose native features or integrations can support the seller’s required tax treatment, document workflow, and recordkeeping—not simply one that displays a tax amount at checkout.
Start with the GST documents and fields your business needs
CBIC’s GST invoice rules specify particulars that can include supplier name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number unique for a financial year; issue date; recipient details, including GSTIN or UIN where applicable; HSN code or service accounting code; description; quantity and unit for goods; total value; tax rates and amounts; and place of supply with state name for inter-state supplies. The rules also describe recipient and delivery details for specified cases involving unregistered recipients. Consult the current rule text and confirm which particulars and provisions apply to your business before configuring an invoice: CBIC GST invoice rules.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
Do not assess only the ordinary tax invoice if your operations need other documents. The rules also address bills of supply, receipt vouchers, revised invoices, credit and debit notes, and other cases. Some registered persons must use notified e-invoice procedures; check current official requirements for applicability rather than assuming a platform’s checkout setting covers them.
What the platform documentation establishes
Shopify: use a GST invoicing service or app
Shopify’s India GST FAQ, updated September 22, 2025, states: “No. Shopify doesn’t create a GST-compliant bill.” It recommends a local third-party GST invoicing service or an app from the Shopify App Store for that purpose: Shopify’s GST in India FAQ.

The same FAQ explains that GST amounts depend on the merchant’s location and products. It describes intra-state sales as involving CGST and SGST and out-of-state sales as involving IGST. Shopify also says it cannot set multiple tax line items, although its tax setup can charge the combined CGST and SGST amount for intra-state goods sales. If you connect an invoicing service, verify that the resulting invoice displays the required tax components as well as the other applicable statutory particulars.
WooCommerce: configurable tools, with merchant setup
WooCommerce documents tax-rate configuration and calculation, but its guidance does not determine a seller’s legal tax treatment. Its WooCommerce Tax automated calculation service is available for a listed set of countries that excludes India; the service also does not file returns or remit tax: WooCommerce Tax guide.

WooCommerce documents PDF invoice extensions and says merchants should configure invoice formats in line with local tax-office requirements: PDF invoices and packing slips documentation. Its invoice display documentation says tax appears according to WooCommerce tax settings: Invoice tax display documentation. These documents establish configurable features, not that a default installation or a particular extension automatically produces a compliant Indian GST invoice.
Compare platforms and integrations against five practical tests
- Document coverage: Can the platform or connected service generate the documents you actually use—such as tax invoices, bills of supply, credit notes, and any applicable e-invoice workflow?
- Required fields and numbering: Can the output include the supplier, recipient, transaction, tax, HSN or service-code, and place-of-supply details that apply to your transactions? Confirm that serial-number behavior meets the applicable rule.
- Tax configuration: Can you configure the relevant rates and presentation for your product classifications, customer locations, shipping, and tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive pricing? Treat this as software configuration, not a decision about your legal obligation.
- Operational records: Can orders, discounts, refunds, and sales from each channel be reconciled into useful accounting records and exports? A storefront and a marketplace may not share the same reporting context.
- Control and maintenance: Know who updates tax settings and invoice formats when requirements change, what support is available, and whether you can retain sample outputs for review. Shopify points merchants to third-party services or apps; WooCommerce places configuration and local invoice setup with the merchant.
Test the full order-to-invoice workflow before launch
WooCommerce’s troubleshooting guidance recommends testing tax configuration with a known customer address and a rate expected for that address, while noting that its guidance checks software configuration rather than determining which tax should be charged: WooCommerce tax troubleshooting guide. Use test orders that reflect your real business. Include intra-state and inter-state delivery addresses, tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive pricing where relevant, shipping, discounts, refunds or returns, and each document type you need.

Account for marketplace reporting separately
A seller’s own-store invoice workflow does not necessarily answer how marketplace transactions should be reported. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 user guide discusses supplies made through e-commerce operators where the operator is liable to collect tax under section 52 or pay tax under section 9(5). Sellers using a marketplace should check the applicable reporting treatment for that channel separately: GST Portal GSTR-1 user guide.
Choose based on the trade-off, not a blanket ranking
A hosted platform can reduce infrastructure work but may still need a GST invoicing integration. A configurable self-hosted platform can give a seller control through settings and extensions, while requiring more setup and verification. The documented Shopify and WooCommerce workflows support these practical trade-offs; they do not establish a universal best platform for every Indian seller. Pick the option whose complete invoice and recordkeeping workflow can be verified against your business’s requirements.
