A collar necklace is defined by how short it sits: Jewelers of America places collar length at 12–14 inches, worn above the neckbone against the throat. “Chain collar” can also describe different constructions, from a flexible chain to a rigid or semi-rigid collar. To find the right one, check its actual length, how it is built, and how it will sit with the neckline you plan to wear.
What counts as a collar necklace?
Jewelers of America gives collar necklaces a conventional length of 12–14 inches. For comparison, its guide lists chokers at 14–16 inches and princess-length necklaces at 17–19 inches. These are style conventions, not guaranteed product measurements, and retailer labels can vary. A necklace listed as a “collar” may not fit like another collar on you.
Fit depends on the wearer’s neck and on the necklace’s shape and construction. Check the stated measurement and, if possible, compare it with a necklace you already own that sits where you want. Jewelers of America’s length guidance is at its necklace style guide.
Chain or structured collar: what is the difference?
A flexible chain bends and drapes around the neck. A rigid or semi-rigid collar holds more of its shape. Product names do not always make that distinction clear, so inspect photos and construction details before buying. A structured piece may keep a defined curve, while a chain’s position can shift as it moves.

Also check what the listed length measures. Blue Nile says its own necklace measurements run end to end, including the clasp; other retailers may use a different convention.
