Choose a Stellar wallet by starting with the DeFi application you intend to use: confirm that it supports the wallet, then check the wallet’s Soroban signing, device, and key-recovery features. Freighter is a well-documented starting point for browser-based Soroban use, while LOBSTR documents native Stellar asset and decentralized-exchange features. Neither wallet is a universal fit, and wallet compatibility does not make a DeFi protocol safe or guarantee returns.
Start with the DeFi app you plan to use
Wallet compatibility is specific to the application and its signing flow. Stellar’s Wallet Kit lists multiple wallet options, but the available ecosystem documentation does not provide a current, exhaustive matrix matching every wallet and hardware device to every DeFi app. Check the target app’s own current supported-wallet list before transferring assets.
- Open the DeFi app’s official connection instructions and confirm the wallet names and device types it supports.
- Check that the wallet can handle the app’s required Soroban contract-signing and token workflow, not just ordinary Stellar transactions.
- Connect and complete a low-value test, if the app supports one, before committing more funds. Review the transaction details in the wallet before signing.
Stellar’s Wallet Kit documentation is useful for identifying ecosystem integrations, but an entry there does not prove that a particular DeFi app supports every listed wallet or device.
Compare wallets by the work you need them to do
| Wallet or option | Documented fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Freighter | Stellar describes it as its flagship non-custodial browser extension for signing Stellar transactions. Official guides cover Soroban token visibility, dapp integration, payments, and signing Soroban XDRs. | Confirm the target app supports Freighter and the specific Soroban contract and token flow you need; documented workflows do not guarantee compatibility with every app. |
| LOBSTR | LOBSTR documents trustlines, Stellar asset holding, Stellar DEX trading, and mobile token swaps. It also describes passkey mobile accounts, email-based web accounts, encrypted key sync across supported platforms, and local decryption and signing. | Confirm that the target Soroban app supports LOBSTR. Native asset and DEX features alone do not establish Soroban protocol compatibility. |
| Scopuly | Stellar’s wallet integration page describes a non-custodial wallet with an open-source browser extension paired with a Scopuly signer on iOS, Android, or macOS. The extension handles account access and signing requests without storing secret keys or seed phrases in the extension, according to that page. | Verify that the target dapp supports this paired setup and the mobile or desktop signer you plan to use. |
| Ledger or Trezor hardware wallet | Both hardware-wallet brands appear among the options in Stellar’s Wallet Kit. | Verify the exact wallet, dapp, device model, firmware, and signing flow. The integration listing does not establish universal compatibility. |
Freighter’s official guides document adding Soroban tokens and interacting with Soroban dapps, including contract-related signing. The guides are dated July 21, 2026; their documented capabilities are a useful starting point, not a guarantee that Freighter works with every Soroban application. See Freighter documentation.

Check Soroban support, not just Stellar account features
Stellar asset management and Soroban smart-contract interaction are related but distinct capabilities. A wallet may let you hold Stellar-issued assets, establish trustlines, or trade on the Stellar decentralized exchange without supporting the contract-signing flow required by a particular Soroban DeFi app.
- For lending, borrowing, or other contract-based activity: verify that the wallet can connect to the app and sign the required Soroban transactions.
- For a Soroban token: check whether the wallet can display or add the specific token and whether the app’s flow requires a separate contract interaction.
- For ordinary Stellar assets or DEX activity: confirm trustline and trading features separately; do not infer Soroban support from them.
Stellar’s DeFi overview describes activity such as borrowing, lending, and staking, along with wallet connections and infrastructure. It cites Blend as an example of a Stellar lending and borrowing protocol used in a Meru yield-product case study. That ecosystem example is not a compatibility guarantee for any wallet or a recommendation to use a protocol.

Understand keys, recovery, and additional safeguards
Before funding a wallet, find out where transaction signing occurs, what credentials or backup you need to restore access, and what happens if you lose the device. Treat product security descriptions as vendor claims unless independently assessed.
LOBSTR’s documented key approach
LOBSTR says its secret key is generated on-device, encrypted client-side, downloaded in encrypted form for use on another supported device, and decrypted locally for signing. These are LOBSTR’s descriptions of its product, not an independent security audit. Read its current wallet documentation and recovery instructions before relying on a particular setup.

LOBSTR Vault and multisignature
LOBSTR describes its optional Vault as using Stellar network multisignature and additional keys. Multisignature can add an approval requirement, but it also makes setup and recovery more consequential: understand which keys are required and how you would regain access before enabling it. LOBSTR’s description is not a guarantee against loss or compromise.
Hardware wallets
A hardware wallet may be relevant if the exact dapp and wallet support the device and its signing flow. Confirm compatibility before buying a device or transferring assets; support for Ledger or Trezor in the Wallet Kit does not establish that every model works with every application.

Choose the interface that fits your routine
Freighter is documented as a browser extension. LOBSTR describes mobile and web account options, while Scopuly’s documented browser extension pairs with a signer on iOS, Android, or macOS. Match the interface to the device you actually use to access the dapp, and verify that you can complete the full connection and signing process on it.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- If your DeFi activity is browser-based, look for a wallet extension explicitly supported by the app.
- If you prefer a mobile workflow, confirm that the app supports the wallet’s mobile connection or paired-signer method.
- If you use a desktop or hardware device, verify that the specific wallet and app recognize it and show transaction details clearly before approval.
A practical selection checklist
- App match: The target DeFi app currently lists the wallet and your intended device.
- Contract flow: The wallet can connect and sign the Soroban transactions the app requires.
- Token handling: You can identify and manage the relevant Soroban token, where needed.
- Recovery: You understand how access is restored and what information or keys must be kept safe.
- Extra safeguards: Any hardware or multisignature setup is supported by the exact app and has a recovery plan you understand.
- Asset features: Trustlines, native Stellar asset holding, and DEX trading meet your needs, independently of Soroban compatibility.
