Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo choose a spot Bitcoin ETF, compare its current net expense ratio and any fee waiver, its trading volume and bid-ask spread, its share price versus net asset value (NAV), and its NAV returns against a named bitcoin reference over the same dates. These are separate tests: a low fee does not guarantee easy trading or the closest tracking. The available dated figures do not establish a current overall winner.
What a spot Bitcoin ETF share represents
Investors commonly call these products spot Bitcoin ETFs, while SEC materials refer to them as spot bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs). SEC-filed materials describe funds that purchase and own bitcoin and issue shares representing a fractional beneficial interest in the product’s net assets. Buying a share provides market exposure through a security; it is not the same as directly owning bitcoin. Fund expenses and liabilities affect the value and returns of that exposure. The SEC approved exchange listing and trading of a number of spot bitcoin ETP shares on January 10, 2024; that approval was not a judgment that bitcoin suits every investor or that one ETP is better than another.
Compare the costs you will actually pay
Look beyond the headline expense ratio
Check the current prospectus for the annual expense ratio, the net fee after any waiver, the waiver’s terms and its end date. A temporary waiver can make a fund’s current charge lower than its stated ongoing rate, and the cost may rise when the waiver expires. The expense ratio is only one part of an investor’s total cost; brokerage charges and the price paid when trading also matter.
For example, Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF’s 2024 Form 10-Q described a 0.25% annual sponsor fee and a temporary six-month waiver on the first $5 billion of assets beginning January 11, 2024. Those were historical, product-specific terms—not a current fee offer or a basis for ranking funds today. See the filing.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Assess trading liquidity using volume and spreads
Trading volume shows how much of a fund’s shares changed hands over a stated period; the bid-ask spread is the gap between the best displayed buying and selling prices. A narrower spread generally means less immediate price friction for a trade at the displayed quotes, but actual execution depends on timing, order size, and market conditions. Compare dollar volume and average bid-ask spread over the same observation window, and consider the time and order size relevant to your own trades.
Fund size alone does not establish how cheaply a particular order can be executed. Nor does a high-volume day guarantee consistently tight spreads. Grayscale Investments published issuer-comparison figures for expense ratios, 30-day trading volume, spreads, and premium or discount as of August 31, 2025. Those are dated issuer data, not a current or independent liquidity ranking. View Grayscale’s comparison.

As historical context only, Strategy Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-Q reported $4.6 billion in trading volume on January 11, 2024, the first trading day for the spot bitcoin ETPs. This was a launch-day figure reported by a company in an SEC filing, not an SEC statistic and not a measure of present-day liquidity. See the filing.
Check whether the market price is near NAV
An ETP share can trade above its net asset value (a premium) or below it (a discount). Compare the market price and NAV for the same date and, where possible, the same time; otherwise the difference may not be meaningful. A premium or discount is distinct from the expense ratio and from the bid-ask spread.

Creation and redemption activity can help keep market prices aligned with NAV. SEC-filed risk disclosure explains that disruption or difficulty in that process can weaken arbitrage and allow shares to diverge from NAV. Review the current product prospectus for its specific risks. Invesco’s filing illustrates the type of disclosure to examine.
Measure tracking difference over matching dates
Tracking difference is the gap between an ETP’s return and the return of a specified bitcoin reference over a stated period. To compare products, use NAV returns—not just exchange-traded share prices—and match the start date, end date, return convention, and bitcoin benchmark. A result for one interval does not establish how the fund will track over another.

Expenses and liabilities affect the exposure reflected in a fund’s returns, but the expense ratio is not itself a measured tracking difference. The available sources do not establish a current, consistent tracking comparison across funds, so they cannot support a claim that one currently tracks bitcoin most closely. Check fund reports and a clearly identified benchmark series before drawing that conclusion.
Use a consistent comparison before choosing
| Check | What to compare | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | Current expense ratio, net charge after waivers, and waiver terms and end date | Use the current prospectus; historical fee terms may no longer apply. |
| Trading liquidity | Dollar volume and bid-ask spread over a stated period | Conditions vary by time and order size; dated volume figures are snapshots, not permanent rankings. |
| Premium or discount | Market price relative to NAV at a matched date and time | Creation/redemption disruption can weaken the price-alignment mechanism. |
| Tracking | NAV total return and a named bitcoin reference over identical dates | State the date range and return convention; do not substitute the fee for observed tracking. |
| Product risks | Custody, expenses, liabilities, and product-specific disclosures | Read the current prospectus; a share is not direct bitcoin ownership. |
- Start with current documents. Find each product’s latest prospectus and verify its expense ratio and any waiver terms.
- Compare execution conditions. Review dollar volume and bid-ask spreads over a shared window, with attention to the order size and trading time that matter to you.
- Check price versus NAV. Use observations from the same date and time rather than comparing mismatched snapshots.
- Compare returns consistently. Match NAV return dates and convention to a named bitcoin reference; do not infer tracking from fees alone.
- Review the risks and access. Read the product’s disclosures and confirm that your brokerage offers the ticker and order controls you intend to use.
Keep the investment risk in view
These comparisons help distinguish costs and trading behavior; they do not make bitcoin low-risk. In his January 10, 2024 statement on the approvals, SEC Chair Gary Gensler called bitcoin “a speculative, volatile asset.” The statement was not an endorsement of any ETP. Read the statement. Bitcoin exposure can lose value, and product-specific risks and costs should be considered before investing.
