Because fees, markets, liquidity and contracts change, verify each item in the venue’s live application and documentation immediately before trading.
What you are choosing
A perpetual contract tracks an underlying asset without a fixed expiry date. You post collateral, take a long or short position, and usually use leverage. Since there is no settlement date that automatically closes the position, financing can accrue for as long as you hold it. The financing mechanism may be called funding or borrowing, and its rate, direction and calculation interval differ by venue and market.

A Solana venue can also expose you to risks outside the contract itself: a delayed transaction, a failed oracle update, a liquidation during a volatile block, an upgrade key, or a withdrawal process that is unavailable when you need it. The right comparison therefore combines economics, execution and controls.
Calculate the full cost of a position
A headline maker or taker fee is only one line in the trade. Jupiter Research’s cost discussion says execution cost includes opening fees, slippage, liquidation costs and borrowing or funding charges. Use the following model for both a planned trade and a stressed scenario.

Trading fees: quote both legs
Capture the fee schedule that applies to your account and market, not a generic promotional headline. Identify whether the order is a maker or taker, whether a limit order can execute immediately and therefore pay taker pricing, and whether the platform charges a separate opening or closing fee. Record rebates only if you can actually qualify for them; token incentives should not be treated as a permanent reduction in cost.
For a fair comparison, calculate the fee on the same notional and assume the same execution style. A fee quoted as a percentage of notional should be applied to both entry and exit. If the venue quotes a flat charge, convert it to a percentage at your intended trade size so that small and large orders are not compared misleadingly.
Funding and borrowing while the position is open
Ask four questions: how often is the charge assessed, who pays whom, what reference price is used, and can the sign change? Do not project one displayed rate across a week or month without checking the venue’s calculation rule and the market’s history.

Model at least three holding periods—one hour, one day and your maximum plausible holding time. Include a rate reversal in the stress case. A trade that remains profitable before financing can lose money if the funding direction changes while you wait for the thesis to play out.

Slippage, spread and execution cost
Use the live order interface to simulate the intended order size. Record the best bid and ask, the average fill estimate, the worst displayed fill and the difference between the mid-price and your estimated execution. Repeat the check for both opening and closing because the book can be asymmetric.
Aggregate volume or total value locked does not tell you what your order can execute at. A venue may show substantial historical activity while offering little depth in the particular contract, size or time window you need. Treat the displayed quote as a snapshot and repeat the measurement during a volatile period if your strategy depends on exiting quickly.
Liquidation is a cost scenario, not an edge case
Read the liquidation formula rather than relying on a rounded leverage number. Confirm the maintenance-margin percentage, whether unrealized funding is included, which oracle or mark price triggers liquidation, how quickly the position is closed, and whether a penalty is deducted from your collateral. Find out whether liquidation is partial, whether an insurance fund covers deficits, and what happens if the fund is insufficient.
Use conservative leverage so that ordinary spread widening and a brief transaction delay do not put the account at the trigger. A platform with a slightly higher fee can be cheaper in practice if its margin and liquidation process gives you more time to reduce risk.
Measure liquidity for your order, not for the headline
Compare liquidity along four dimensions:
- Executable depth: how much can be bought or sold within a price-impact limit you consider acceptable.
- Spread: the distance between the best bid and ask at the time you trade.
- Market coverage: whether the exact asset, collateral and contract specification you need are available.
- Stress behavior: whether quotes remain available during sharp moves, congestion or oracle interruptions.
Record these values for your planned notional, not for a nominal one-unit order. If you trade regularly, keep a log at several times of day and across both quiet and volatile sessions. The useful question is not “Which venue has the largest volume?” but “How much will my order move the price, and can I close it when conditions deteriorate?”

Zeta Markets’ own Zeta X litepaper identifies latency, congestion and barriers to liquidity provision as challenges for a derivatives exchange built completely on Solana layer 1. The document describes the project’s design constraints; it is not an independent measurement of every Solana venue. The same litepaper reports more than $7 billion in trading volume and more than 100,000 active traders for its first-generation exchange, but those are project-reported historical figures with no date stated on the retrieved page. They should not be used as proof of current depth or activity.

How to run a practical depth test
- Choose the contract and notional you actually expect to trade.
- Open the live order book or trade ticket and note the mid-price, spread and estimated average fill.
- Increase the simulated size until the price impact reaches your maximum acceptable level; record that size.
- Repeat the test for the opposite direction and for the closing order.
- Repeat at a volatile time and during any announced network congestion, then compare the results.
If the interface does not disclose enough depth to perform this test, treat the uncertainty as a risk. Do not substitute a platform-wide volume figure for missing execution data.
Review security in layers
No single audit badge, custody label or uptime claim proves that a perpetuals venue is safe. Review the following layers separately.
Contracts and oracle design
Identify the deployed program or contracts, the exact version and the oracle sources. Determine how stale, conflicting or unavailable prices are handled, whether prices can be paused, and how mark price differs from index price. Check who can change oracle configuration and how quickly an emergency update can take effect. An oracle failure can cause an incorrect liquidation even when the underlying market is behaving normally.
Audit scope and date
Read the audit report’s scope, commit or deployment version, exclusions and unresolved findings. A February 2024 smart-contract audit associated with Jupiter shows that a scoped review existed at that time; it does not establish that later code, integrations, dependencies or operational controls are safe. Require the deployed version to match the reviewed version, and look for a process that publishes fixes and follow-up reviews.

Administrative and upgrade controls
Find the administrator, upgrade authority and emergency-pause authority. Check whether keys are held by a multisignature account, protected by a timelock, publicly disclosed and subject to a documented procedure. A technically strong contract can still carry governance risk if one key can change markets, collateral parameters or withdrawals immediately.
Custody and withdrawals
Map the path of collateral from your wallet to the trading account and back. Determine whether the venue is non-custodial, whether funds sit in a program-controlled account, what permissions are granted by your wallet and whether withdrawals can be delayed or paused. Test a small deposit and withdrawal before using meaningful collateral, and keep enough separate funds to pay network fees.
Liquidation, insurance and incidents
Read the liquidation engine, insurance-fund rules and deficit treatment. Search the venue’s incident disclosures for failed liquidations, oracle outages, halted withdrawals, bad-debt events and postmortems. A history of transparent disclosure does not remove risk, but silence makes it harder to estimate operational exposure.
Solana execution and MEV
Solana-level conditions affect whether a transaction arrives, lands at the expected price or is reordered. Solana developer documentation discusses MEV protection and stake-weighted quality-of-service mechanisms; these are network execution considerations, not guarantees about a particular perpetuals venue. Check whether the platform provides transaction simulation, priority-fee controls, reliable retry behavior and protection against harmful ordering for your order type.
A repeatable comparison process
- Define the trade. Write down the contract, direction, notional, collateral asset, leverage, expected holding period, maximum acceptable spread and the price at which you would exit.
- Confirm availability. Verify that the market, collateral and account features are live in your jurisdiction and in the current application. Do not rely on an old article or an archived interface.
- Capture the fee schedule. Save the current maker/taker rates, opening and closing charges, rebates, minimums and network-fee treatment that apply to your account.
- Measure execution. Simulate entry and exit at your intended size, record spread and price impact, and repeat in both directions.
- Model holding cost. Apply the displayed funding or borrowing rule to your planned duration, then test a higher rate and a sign reversal.
- Stress liquidation. Calculate the trigger from the venue’s maintenance-margin formula and include penalties, slippage and a delayed transaction.
- Inspect controls. Match the deployed code to audits, identify oracle and upgrade authorities, and read withdrawal, pause and incident procedures.
- Test operations with small size. Deposit the minimum practical amount, open and close a small position, withdraw, and observe confirmation time and actual charges.
- Monitor after entry. Track funding, margin ratio, oracle status, network congestion and the ability to submit a closing transaction. Set alerts before liquidation is imminent.
How to treat published comparisons and historical numbers
Jupiter Research published a funding-rate comparison dated January 30, 2025. Its examples include SOL perpetual rates for Drift, Binance, HyperLiquid, dYdX and Zeta, along with borrowing-rate examples for Flash and Jupiter. Those figures are historical observations, not current quotations, and they do not by themselves establish which venue is cheapest today.

The same discussion includes open-interest and volume observations, but the available excerpt is not current or consistent enough to support a present-day ranking. Search results also contained conflicting claims about platform status and market leadership, including a Drift documentation redirect to Velocity. Verify live markets, rates, leverage limits and operational status directly before relying on any comparison.
Separate three kinds of evidence:
- Protocol documentation: explains intended mechanics, such as a funding formula or liquidation rule.
- Historical or project-reported usage: indicates past activity but not the depth available for your next order.
- Live market data: shows the price, spread, funding and depth that can actually change from minute to minute.
A hypothetical cost worksheet
The following is an illustration only; it is not a quote from any venue. Suppose you plan a $20,000 SOL perpetual position, hold it for 24 hours and close it once. A live ticket might show an opening fee of 0.04% ($8) and a closing fee of 0.04% ($8). If the combined entry-and-exit spread and price impact were 0.15% ($30), funding for the period were $12, and network and priority charges totaled $2, the estimated round-trip cost before liquidation would be $60.

Replace every assumption with the live values from the platform. Then run a stress worksheet with wider impact, a higher or reversed funding rate and a liquidation penalty. The purpose is to expose which variable dominates your trade, not to predict a guaranteed result.

Red flags that should stop a comparison
- The platform advertises a fee but does not explain whether it applies to both opening and closing.
- Funding is displayed without a calculation interval, payment direction or historical context.
- Liquidity is described only with total volume or value locked, with no executable depth for your size.
- The audit is undated, covers a different deployment or omits oracle, liquidation and upgrade components.
- Upgrade or pause authorities are undisclosed, uncontrolled or able to change collateral rules instantly.
- Withdrawal timing, insurance-fund treatment or deficit handling is unclear.
- The interface cannot show an estimated fill, margin ratio or liquidation price before submission.
- Current status, available markets or rates are supported only by old comparison pages or conflicting search snippets.
Bottom-line decision rule
Select the venue that gives you the clearest, verifiable answer to every material question for your specific trade: what a round trip costs, how much size can execute, how funding behaves during the planned hold, what triggers liquidation, who controls the contracts and oracle, how collateral can be withdrawn, and how the system behaves when Solana is congested. If a venue cannot provide that evidence, the uncertainty—not the advertised fee—should determine whether you trade there.
