1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose by what you need the phone to do—not by an “AI” label. A feature is genuinely on-device only when that particular task runs on the phone; some features use cloud services, and some combine local and cloud processing. Before buying, verify the exact model, software version, language, country, processing path, and privacy controls for each feature you plan to use.
Start with the AI jobs you actually want
Write down three specific jobs you want your next phone to handle. For example, you might want to translate calls, summarize notifications, edit images, improve a draft, or complete a multi-step task across apps. This short list makes it easier to compare phones on useful capabilities rather than broad marketing claims.
For each job, ask whether it must work without an internet connection, whether you are comfortable with cloud processing, and which language you need. A phone may offer several AI features while processing each one differently.
Check eligibility for the exact phone and software
Do not assume that a feature works across every phone in a product family. Check the manufacturer’s current support page for the precise model and software version before purchase, then confirm again after setup. Eligibility lists and feature availability can change.

Apple Intelligence
Apple’s current support information lists supported iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, and iPhone 16 models or later, running iOS 27 or later. Its list of tools includes Writing Tools, summaries, Live Translation, image features, and notification summaries, but individual features have their own requirements and availability. Apple’s Apple Intelligence availability and requirements page is the place to check the current details.
Gemini Intelligence
Google’s current Gemini Intelligence page names Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8. It also lists hardware and software criteria, including 12GB or more of RAM, a qualified system-on-chip, and applicable performance benchmarks. Google says features may vary by country, language, and device, and may have usage limits. Check Google’s Gemini Intelligence requirements for the exact model and feature.
The separate Gemini mobile app has a much broader Android compatibility baseline: Android 9 or newer and at least 2GB of RAM. That establishes app eligibility only; it does not mean a phone qualifies for Gemini Intelligence or that a particular task runs on-device. See Google’s Gemini mobile app requirements.

Samsung Galaxy AI
Samsung’s support documentation explains that behavior can depend on feature and settings. Its Gulf support page, last updated January 15, 2024, says that selecting on-device-only processing can limit some functionality and that some advanced features require online processing. It specifically describes Live Translate as using on-device AI only. Because that guidance is dated and regional, verify the current setting and processing behavior for the exact Galaxy model and feature you want.
Find out where each task is processed
“On-device AI” is not a reliable description of every task on a phone. Read the feature-specific documentation and look for whether processing happens on the phone, in the cloud, or through a combination. If the phone offers an on-device-only setting, check what stops working or becomes limited when you enable it.
Apple says, “In many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” Apple also documents Private Cloud Compute for some more complex requests, saying that data is processed for the request and not retained. Apple provides an Apple Intelligence Report that can show requests sent to Private Cloud Compute. These are Apple’s descriptions of its system; they do not mean every Apple Intelligence task is local.

For Samsung, distinguish the specific function from the general Galaxy AI label. Samsung Gulf Support’s 2024 page states: “Live Translate, however, makes use of on-device AI only.” Treat that statement as applying to Live Translate as described on that page, not as a guarantee about every Galaxy AI feature or current model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check language, country, and connected services
Confirm that the specific feature supports your language and country—not just that the phone’s assistant is available there. Apple lists different language availability for Messages Live Translation and Phone and FaceTime translation. ChatGPT integration is available only where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Google warns that Gemini Intelligence features may vary by country, language, and device; as Google puts it, “Individual features powered by Gemini Intelligence may vary by country and language.”
Also check which apps and services a feature can access. Google lets users manage permissions and choose which Google apps to connect for Personal Intelligence. For Apple features that integrate with ChatGPT, check the integration and service availability that applies in your location. Review these controls before allowing an assistant to use personal content across apps.

Compare privacy controls and practical limits
Privacy is feature-specific. Compare what data a task accesses, whether it leaves the phone, what controls let you limit access, and whether the feature has usage limits. A setting that keeps processing on-device may reduce functionality, so decide whether the privacy benefit is worth that trade-off for your use.
- Processing visibility: Look for a clear explanation of local and cloud processing, plus any available report or history of cloud requests.
- Permissions: Check which apps, files, messages, or other information the feature can access and how to revoke access.
- Connected services: Verify whether the task sends information to an external service or requires a separate app or account.
- Usage limits: Check whether the feature is capped or subject to other restrictions.
- Offline behavior: If local use matters, test or verify whether the exact task works without a connection.
Use a feature-by-feature shortlist
Make a short comparison for the phones you are considering. Write down only confirmed details from current support pages and product documentation; use “not confirmed” rather than inferring support from a brand name.
| Question | What to record |
|---|---|
| Does it do my task? | The exact feature and the job it performs |
| Is this model eligible? | Exact model and required software version |
| Does it support my language and country? | Availability for the feature, not just the assistant |
| Where is processing done? | On-device, cloud, or a documented combination |
| What can I control? | Permissions, connected apps, cloud settings, and reports |
| What are the limits? | Hardware requirements, usage caps, and trade-offs |
Then compare ordinary phone-buying factors that affect your budget and daily use: total price in your country, size, battery life, camera quality, storage, durability, carrier compatibility, and software-update support. There is no single best choice without knowing your budget, location, preferred operating system, and desired tasks.
