Choose a phone for the full period you expect to own it—not just the first day it feels new. Before buying, check the exact model’s update-support dates, hold its physical design (ideally with the case you plan to use), and compare battery, durability, and repair information. For covered phones placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025, the energy label and repairability information add standardized points of comparison.
Start with how long you plan to keep the phone
A phone can remain physically usable after software support ends, but that may affect how long you are comfortable relying on it. Compare the support policy for the exact model and market, and note when the stated period begins; a duration measured from launch or first sale is not necessarily the same as that many years from your purchase date.
- Google Pixel: Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the US. Older models listed by Google receive five years, while Pixel 5a and earlier no longer receive Android version or security updates. Check the Pixel support policy for the model’s coverage and dates.
- Samsung Galaxy S26+: Samsung’s environmental report says this model receives seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. See the Galaxy S26+ Product Environmental Report.
These are model-specific examples, not a rule that every phone from either brand receives the same support. For any candidate, verify the eligible model, region, start date, and whether the policy promises OS upgrades, security updates, or both.
Judge comfort in your own hand, not by screen size alone
A display diagonal does not tell you whether a phone will feel comfortable during calls, typing, or one-handed use. If possible, try the exact model in person and do the tasks you expect to repeat every day.

- Check width, weight, thickness, and edge shape while holding it the way you normally do.
- Reach the buttons and the parts of the screen you use often without shifting into an awkward grip.
- Notice whether the camera bump catches your fingers or makes the phone rock when it rests on a surface.
- Try a case that fits the model. It may change grip and protection, but it also adds bulk and can affect pocket feel and button access.
There is no universally best phone size or established hand-size threshold for comfort. Your grip, common tasks, and preference for a case matter more than a single dimension.
Compare durability claims without treating them as lifetime guarantees
Look for information about accidental-drop resistance, scratch resistance, battery longevity, and protection from dust and water. These describe different risks; no single rating is a complete measure of how a phone will age.

For example, Samsung reports an IP68 rating for the Galaxy S26+ in its environmental report. That rating should be read as a limited product claim, not a promise that the phone will stay waterproof for its entire life. Google says Pixel water and dust resistance is not permanent and may diminish or be lost through normal wear, repair, disassembly, or damage; it also says Pixel phones are not drop- or tumble-proof. A case can be an optional way to add protection, but it does not make a phone drop-proof. Check compatibility and try the case with the phone to decide whether the added bulk still feels comfortable.

Use EU labels to compare battery and repair information where applicable
For covered smartphones and tablets placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025, ecodesign and energy-labelling requirements provide consumers with information including battery longevity, dust and water protection, accidental-drop resistance, and repairability. The European Commission’s smartphone guidance says covered devices must meet a battery endurance requirement of at least 800 charge-discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity. This is a requirement for covered devices, not a prediction of how long any individual owner’s battery will last.
The Commission also estimates that the measures could increase the average lifetime of a mid-range smartphone from 3.0 to 4.1 years. That is an estimate of the measures’ effect, not a lifespan guarantee for a particular model. If you are shopping outside the EU, or for a device not covered by these rules, do not assume the same label or requirements apply.

Check what can be repaired and how long parts remain available
A phone is easier to keep in service when common repairs are practical and replacement parts can be obtained. Before buying, check which parts are offered, who is eligible to perform repairs, whether instructions and tools are available, and whether service is accessible in your region.
For covered devices, the Commission’s summary says critical spare parts must be available to repairers within 5–10 working days and for seven years after a model’s last placement on the EU market. The detailed scope and exceptions are set out in Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670. These EU requirements do not establish that every part is available to every buyer or that a repair will be inexpensive.

Samsung describes repairability as a product-development priority and says it is expanding its US Self-Repair program in its Galaxy S25+ environmental report. Program eligibility, parts, pricing, tools, and repair routes vary by model and location, so confirm the current options for the exact phone before relying on a repair path.
Compare candidate phones with the same checklist
When you have two or more models in mind, use the same questions for each rather than letting one prominent feature stand in for long-term usability.
- Comfort: Which phone feels better in your normal grip, with the case you expect to use?
- Software: How long are OS and security updates promised, which version of the model is eligible, and when does the clock start?
- Durability: What do the available battery, drop, scratch, and ingress-protection details actually measure?
- Repair: Are the likely replacement parts and repair services accessible where you live, and for how long?
- Ownership fit: Does the protection you want make the phone too bulky, and is the repair route practical for your budget and location?
Policies and repair programs can change. Confirm the current details for the exact model and market at the time you buy.
