Choose the search engines your customers use in the places and languages you serve—not a universal “best” engine. Build organic visibility and track it separately on each relevant platform; if local customers matter, manage your business listing as well as your website. Keep paid advertising in a separate budget because ad spend does not buy organic rankings.
Which search engine should my business focus on?
Start with your customers, not a ranking of search engines. List the countries, languages, and service areas that matter, then consider where those customers are likely to search. The available official guidance explains how Google and Bing handle search, but does not establish current audience shares or identify one engine as best for every business.
Search engines operate their own crawling, indexing, and ranking systems. Bing says its results can reflect relevance, engagement, freshness, location, and language; Google likewise sets its own requirements for search visibility. A presence in one engine therefore does not guarantee visibility in another. See Microsoft’s explanation of Bing results and Google Search Essentials.
- Audience and market: Prioritize the markets and languages where you actually seek customers.
- Local discovery: If customers search for nearby services, map and business-listing visibility may matter alongside website results.
- Monitoring: Use each relevant engine’s webmaster tools; one platform’s reports do not represent all search results.
- Privacy: If privacy controls affect your choice, compare the current policies of the services you are considering. The cited guidance does not compare providers’ full privacy terms.
How do I get my business website to show up in search results?
Search inclusion is not guaranteed. Google says its crawler discovers many sites automatically, but can miss some; a new site or changes may take a few weeks to be noticed. It also says that appearing in organic results costs nothing, while meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. See Google’s guide to getting information on Google and Google Search Essentials.

- Check whether pages appear in Google. Search for
site:example.com, replacing the domain with yours. Google notes that this query may not show every indexed URL. - Investigate missing pages. Check whether search crawlers can access the site, whether other sites link to it, and whether technical barriers or a recent launch explain the delay. Use Google Search Console to diagnose issues.
- Make the site useful and accessible. Follow the relevant engine’s guidance for crawlable, indexable pages. Google’s SEO Starter Guide provides steps for improving search discoverability.
- Set up monitoring for each target engine. Review its webmaster tools and reports rather than assuming Google visibility or data tells you how the site performs elsewhere.
What should a local business do differently?
For a local business, search presence can include a business profile as well as the website. Google says Business Profile manages how business information appears across Search and Maps. Claim and maintain the listing, keep business details accurate, and make sure the website works well on mobile devices. Google’s guide to getting information on Google covers Business Profile and local visibility.
The right emphasis depends on how customers find you: someone searching for a nearby provider may use a map listing, while someone comparing specialized services may reach a website result. Treat both as possible discovery paths rather than assuming one replaces the other.

Should I pay for ads to rank higher?
No. Paid search can provide a separate route to visibility, but buying ads does not purchase a higher organic position. Microsoft says Bing ads are labeled and payment does not improve organic placement. Google also says advertising does not affect a site’s presence in its organic results. See Microsoft’s Bing results guidance and Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO.
If you advertise, set a separate budget and goal for the campaign. Evaluate paid results as advertising performance, and organic visibility as work on whether pages can be crawled, indexed, and found without an ad.

When should I hire an SEO?
For a small local business, Google Search Central says, “If you run a small local business, you can probably do much of the work yourself.” If you do hire help, look for clear methods and evidence rather than a promise of a particular ranking. Google’s SEO hiring guide recommends reviewing examples and references and cautions against granting write access during an initial audit.
