- Intended use and reach: Confirm that the stool is designed for the child’s intended task and provides the needed height without encouraging climbing beyond the platform.
- Height and footprint: Compare step height with the overall dimensions and base width. A higher platform is not automatically a better fit if the base is narrow for the available space.
- Stability and grip: Look for a substantial base, a tread surface intended to reduce slipping, and feet designed to grip the floor. Verify these details in manufacturer documentation.
- Folding mechanism: If it folds, identify how it locks open and how to confirm it is fully engaged before use. Inspect the mechanism for damage or incomplete engagement.
- Load limit: Check the manufacturer-stated weight limit for the exact model; do not infer it from appearance or from a similar product.
- Materials and upkeep: Consider whether the stool’s material can be cleaned as needed and whether assembly or maintenance is required.
- Product identity and safety notices: Match the model name and identifier on the product to its documentation, then check for current warnings or recalls.

Children’s folding stools
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) explains that the regulation for children’s folding chairs and stools addresses hazards including pinching, finger injuries, and tip-overs related to instability. Its guidance discusses requirements such as stability, strength, locking mechanisms, third-party testing, certification, and labeling. A general statement that a stool is “tested” or “certified” is not proof that the exact model meets an applicable requirement. Ask what was tested, to which requirement, and for which model. CPSC’s guidance describes obligations for applicable products; it does not establish that a particular stool has been tested or certified.
ASTM F2613-22 and step stools
ASTM F2613-22 is a standard for children’s chairs and stools, but ASTM’s published scope explicitly excludes children’s step stools. Do not treat a claim of compliance with F2613-22 as evidence that a children’s step stool is covered by that standard. See ASTM’s F2613-22 scope.

Why check safety notices for the exact model?
In 2024, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using Topfun Folding 2-Step Stools sold exclusively on Amazon.com, saying the named stools could collapse or tip during use and cause fall and injury hazards. That is a product-specific warning—not evidence that all folding stools are unsafe. Check that a warning or recall matches the brand and exact model you are considering, and avoid relying on a listing’s title alone to establish product identity. Read the CPSC warning.
Step stool or toddler tower?
These are different product types, so the right choice depends on the task and the product’s design. A step stool offers a platform for a child to stand on; a toddler tower is typically designed to position a child within a more enclosed standing space. The available evidence does not establish which type is safer or better for a particular child. Compare the exact product’s intended use, dimensions, stability features, instructions, and safety information rather than assuming one category is universally preferable.

What would justify calling a stool “best” or “parent-tested”?
A meaningful product ranking requires current, comparable information for each model: manufacturer and model identifier, intended use, dimensions and step heights, base width, grip and locking design, stated load limit, materials, assembly needs, and current safety notices. A “parent-tested” claim also requires documented testing—who participated, what they did, when, and how observations were recorded. Without that evidence, a ranked winner or parent-tested label would overstate what is known.
