There is no universally best rideshare app for drivers. The right choice depends on your local pay rules, eligible vehicle, schedule, insurance, trip patterns and costs. Compare Uber and Lyft—or any platforms available where you live—by the money you keep after expenses for all the time you work, not by an advertised hourly figure or one bonus.
What to compare before choosing a platform
Use the same measures for every platform and compare shifts that are as similar as possible. A higher payout per completed trip may not mean higher earnings if you spend more time waiting, drive farther to pickups or have fewer useful trips.
- Net pay: Include fares, tips, attainable incentives and any applicable local pay rules, then account for platform deductions and operating costs. Read current local terms and your pay statements; a platform-fee figure is not the same as your take-home income.
- Total work time and mileage: Count time online waiting for requests, driving to pickups, carrying passengers and repositioning or returning to a useful area. Track business miles, including pickup and other work-related driving.
- Vehicle costs: Estimate fuel or charging, tires, maintenance, repairs, insurance, inspections, depreciation or lease payments, tolls and fees. An app’s gross earnings do not reflect these costs.
- Eligibility and trip mix: Check local requirements and which ride categories your vehicle qualifies for. Vehicle type and ride category can affect rates.
- Coverage and risk: Compare required personal insurance, platform coverage at each trip phase, collision and comprehensive conditions, deductibles and the applicable state certificate.
- Work experience: Consider the trip details shown before acceptance, demand information, safety tools, support, payout timing and how easily you can go online when you want. These features and their availability vary by market.
How to compare earnings after expenses
Run a practical comparison using your own records rather than relying on a platform’s headline rate. Uber’s tax guide says its online mileage summary includes waiting, pickup and on-trip miles, and lists common expense records such as fuel, insurance, repairs, maintenance, registration and depreciation or lease payments. Its guide also describes standard-mileage and actual-expense tax methods; consult a tax professional about which method applies to your circumstances.
- Confirm local terms first. Check each platform’s current driver requirements, pay disclosures, eligible ride categories and incentives for your location.
- Drive comparable shifts. If you are eligible for multiple platforms, record similar days and hours so that differences in demand or time of day are less likely to dominate the comparison.
- Log all work time and miles. Record when you go online and offline, waiting, pickup and trip time, business miles, and repositioning. Use the same definitions for each platform.
- Record actual receipts and costs. Track gross payouts, tips, platform deductions, fuel or charging, maintenance, insurance and other work-related costs. Do not count a bonus unless you can meet its conditions without taking uneconomic work.
- Calculate comparable results. Subtract operating costs from earnings, then compare net per total work hour and net per business mile. Keep taxes in view, but do not confuse a tax deduction with money earned.
Active trip time alone can make a platform look more profitable than it is. A 2026 UC Berkeley IRLE report examines driver-pay methods in Chicago, Philadelphia and Portland, emphasizing the importance of waiting time, expenses and worker benefits. In discussing another analysis, it notes that waiting for ride offers could account for 15–30% of total driver working time; that range is not a universal measurement for every driver or market.

What the current Uber and Lyft disclosures do—and do not—show
The strongest available comparisons here are official disclosures from Uber and Lyft, not independent tests of which app produces better net income. Their terms are local and can change, so treat examples as starting points for checking your own market.
| Disclosure | What it says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Lyft platform fee (Lyft, 2026) | Lyft says its fee is capped at 30% of passenger payments for rides in a month, with an adjustment if the fee exceeds that cap. Lyft also says its fee averages about 14%. | This is Lyft’s description of its own fee, not an audited comparison of driver net income. Lyft defines the platform fee separately from external insurance, tax and government fees. Read Lyft’s fee announcement. |
| California pay disclosure (Lyft help page) | Lyft describes a California-specific guarantee of at least 120% of applicable minimum wage for booked time, plus 37 cents per booked mile. | This is not a nationwide rate or a guarantee of net earnings. The page’s booked-time and mileage rules apply in California. Check Lyft’s California disclosure. |
| Tax mileage example (Uber tax guide) | Uber’s guide gives 72.5 cents per business mile for tax year 2025. | This figure is for 2025, not 2026, and is a tax-year example—not a measure of your actual vehicle cost or earnings. Check the rate for the tax year you are filing. See Uber’s tax guide. |
Lyft says its rate card can vary by market and subregion, pickup location, ride type, vehicle and real-time conditions. Its driver help page lists the California-specific pay terms above; neither disclosure establishes which platform pays more in your city.

Check eligibility, insurance and equipment in your location
Confirm you and your vehicle qualify
Before comparing earnings, verify local rules for driver age, license, screening, vehicle age and class, inspection, documents and passenger capacity. Also check which services your vehicle can serve, including any premium categories. Lyft’s Texas requirements are a state-specific example, not a national standard; Uber and Lyft rules can differ by city and state.
- Review Lyft’s driver requirements and select the location that applies to you.
- Review Uber’s driver requirements for your market and vehicle.
Understand insurance by trip phase
Uber says it maintains platform insurance for rideshare activity, while drivers must maintain legally required personal coverage. Its physical-damage coverage for an accepted trip depends on the driver having personal comprehensive and collision coverage, and Uber’s page states a deductible. Coverage details depend on state and policy terms, so review the certificate for your location and ask your personal insurer whether your policy covers rideshare use.

Decide whether you need a phone mount
A phone mount is useful only if you need one to navigate safely. Uber advises: “If your vehicle doesn’t have an app integration, consider using a phone mount to help you navigate safely on the road.” Compatible vehicles may support Android Auto, CarPlay or Tesla integration, though features vary by market. Lyft’s Texas guidance says phones should be mounted while driving on that platform. If an in-car display already handles navigation, a separate mount may not be necessary.

Can you drive for both Uber and Lyft?
You can compare both if you meet each platform’s local eligibility requirements, but verify current terms and any restrictions before signing up. Driving for more than one platform can give you a broader basis for comparison; it does not guarantee more net income. Track time and miles carefully when switching between apps so costs and work hours are assigned consistently.
Decide based on your own market and schedule
Use each platform’s current local disclosures to check eligibility, pay rules, fees, insurance and available trip types. Then compare your logged results over comparable shifts, including all online time and business miles. A platform that performs well for one driver may be a poor fit for another because local demand, vehicle costs, hours and trip mix differ.
