If financing a new phone is difficult, compare refurbished phones by what you will pay in total, whether the specific device works for your needs, and what the seller will do if it does not. Start with two limits: the maximum you can pay now and, if you consider installments, the maximum total repayment you can afford. Then assess the listing, seller, device protections and payment terms together. “Refurbished” does not guarantee a particular grade, battery condition or warranty.
What should you check before buying a refurbished phone? Get the seller’s condition and testing details in writing; verify battery, network compatibility and software support; read the return and warranty terms; and inspect the phone as soon as it arrives. The guidance below draws on U.S. federal consumer sources and Apple Support UK. Consumer rights, network compatibility and seller terms vary by location, so confirm the rules and conditions that apply where you live.

Set your budget before looking at listings
First decide how much cash you can spend without missing essential bills or taking on payments you cannot reliably make. Treat that as your upfront limit, not as a target to stretch. Separately choose an all-in ceiling for the phone: the most you are willing and able to pay after tax, shipping, required accessories or service, and any financing charges.

Consider whether it supports your mobile network, how much storage you need, camera requirements, accessibility features, and how long you expect to use it. These needs help rule out an apparently cheap device that would have to be replaced soon or cannot run the services you rely on.

For a fair comparison, calculate each option in the same way:
- Paying outright: device price + applicable tax + shipping + any necessary accessories or required service.
- Paying over time: upfront amount + every scheduled payment + interest and fees + any required service or other charges.
Do not compare a refurbished phone’s cash price with only the monthly payment on another phone. A small installment can obscure a larger total, and a plan can make a device unaffordable if payments coincide with other bills. If you cannot find a listing within your cash limit, waiting and saving may reduce costs, though that is not practical when a working phone is urgently needed. A new lower-cost phone may also be worth comparing using the same total-cost, compatibility and protection criteria; refurbished is not automatically the better value.
Compare the listing, seller and protections—not just the grade
There is no universal refurbished-phone grading scale established by the available sources. Terms such as “excellent,” “good” or “refurbished” can mean different things to different sellers. A cosmetic grade may describe visible marks without telling you whether the battery was replaced, what functional tests were performed or which parts were repaired. Compare each seller’s written definition and the specific listing description rather than assuming that matching grade names mean matching condition.
Sales channels can include manufacturers, carriers, retailers, specialist marketplaces and individual sellers. The channel alone does not establish a single condition or repair standard: the individual seller and listing matter. Before paying, identify who is selling the phone and, if different, who refurbished it. Ask what was inspected or tested, what repairs or replacements were made, whether replacement parts are disclosed, and whether listing photos show the actual unit or a representative example.
The Federal Trade Commission’s U.S. guidance on buying from online marketplaces recommends checking seller ratings and contact information, reading shipping and return terms, looking closely at photos, and keeping copies of messages. Ask material questions through a channel that preserves the reply, and retain the listing and transaction records. They may help establish what the seller promised if the phone arrives in a different condition.

| What to compare | Questions to answer for each listing |
|---|---|
| Total cost | What is the price after tax, shipping, necessary accessories or service, and any interest or fees? |
| Battery | Is a minimum capacity stated? Was the battery replaced? How is its condition established, and is it covered if it fails? |
| Condition and refurbishment | What does the cosmetic grade mean? What functional tests and repairs were performed, by whom, and are replacement parts disclosed? |
| Compatibility and useful life | What is the exact model or variant? Is it unlocked and compatible with your network? Does it still receive the software support you need? |
| Return and warranty | How long do you have to return it? Who handles a claim, what costs apply, and is the remedy repair, replacement or refund? |
| Payment risk | What is due now and later? What are the full repayment, dates, fees, credit checks or reporting, and consequences of missed payments? |
A missing answer is not proof of a defect, but it makes the listing harder to assess. Ask the seller before checkout; if a material detail remains unclear, compare a listing with better documentation rather than relying on assumptions.
Get a clear account of battery condition, repairs and wear
Do not infer that “refurbished” means “new battery.” Battery replacement depends on the seller’s policy. Some sellers may instead state a minimum remaining capacity; the relevant question is what this seller promises for this device and what happens if the battery does not meet that promise. Ask whether the battery is covered by the warranty and whether the seller will disclose a replacement or non-original part.
For supported iPhones, Apple Support UK says iPhone 6 and later running iOS 11.3 or later can show battery health and a recommendation about replacement. On the device, look under Settings > Battery > Battery Health; on iOS 16.1 or later, the menu is called Battery Health & Charging. Apple notes that battery-health information is unavailable for unknown or non-genuine batteries. Consequently, the absence of a capacity reading does not establish that the battery is healthy; seek the seller’s documentation and warranty terms instead.
Ask what “refurbished” involved beyond cleaning or cosmetic grading. Useful details include whether the device was tested for its basic functions, whether faults were repaired, and whether any parts were replaced. A seller’s clear written description lets you compare the promise with the phone you receive. No single repair history or parts policy can be assumed for every listing.
Check whether the exact phone can be used on your network
Confirm the precise model or variant with your intended carrier before purchasing. A phone can be in good cosmetic condition and still be unusable or limited on a particular network. Check the carrier’s compatibility information for that exact device rather than relying only on a seller’s broad claim that it is “unlocked” or “works with most networks.” Network technologies and requirements vary by country and carrier.

For an iPhone, Apple recommends checking the Network Provider Lock field in Settings > General > About. “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the iPhone is unlocked. Apple also warns buyers not to purchase an iPhone with Activation Lock enabled. If an online order arrives at the setup screen displaying “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. Ask the seller to confirm that Activation Lock is off before purchase; do not treat a cosmetic grade as proof that the previous owner’s account has been removed.
For used phones generally, the Associated Press has described checking an IMEI status as a way to reduce the risk of buying a phone reported stolen and later blacklisted by a carrier. Use a reliable check appropriate to your location and carrier. An IMEI check can reduce risk, but it is not a guarantee that the device will remain usable or that all listing details are accurate.
Check the model’s software support before deciding how long it will last
A phone’s age is one clue to its remaining useful life, but generation count is only a rough shortcut. In an Associated Press article published April 23, 2025, CCS Insight’s Simon Bryant advised buyers to look at phones about three generations old and to be cautious with devices more than five or six generations old because operating-system support may be ending. Treat that as attributed general guidance, not a rule for every manufacturer or model.
Before buying, verify the current operating-system and security-support status for the exact model with its manufacturer. Support periods differ across brands and devices, and a phone that still turns on may no longer receive the updates you need. Consider whether the remaining support fits your expected period of use, especially if you rely on current apps, security fixes or accessibility features.

Keep these terms distinct: a return window is not necessarily the same as a warranty, and a seller’s warranty is not the same as marketplace assistance. Apple Support UK recommends understanding the seller’s return policy and certification process when buying a pre-owned iPhone. The FTC’s U.S. marketplace guidance notes that platforms differ: some leave returns and refunds to the buyer and seller, while others may help when an item does not match its description. That assistance may not apply to every seller or item, and deadlines can be short. Check the terms for the specific listing and use the marketplace’s own checkout and payment channel.

Paying the refurbished phone’s full cost now, if affordable, makes the amount owed easy to see. If that is not possible, compare a proposed plan with your budget and the outright price. Do not assume a payment plan is available to you, cheaper, or a guaranteed way around credit screening.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau defines buy now, pay later (BNPL) as a type of installment loan that typically lets a consumer receive an item immediately with little or no initial payment and repay it in four or fewer payments. Some common BNPL plans split the price into four interest-free payments every two weeks, but that pattern does not describe every plan. The CFPB says creditworthiness may be evaluated and most BNPL loans can charge late fees. Read the actual loan terms and confirm the payment schedule fits your budget.
Before accepting any plan, write down its upfront charge, total of all payments, interest and fees, each due date, and consequences of a late or missed payment. Check whether the provider conducts a credit inquiry or reports payment information, what happens if you return the phone, and whether you remain responsible for payments while a refund is being processed. For a lease-to-own or rent-to-own arrangement, also find out who is responsible for repairs and what you would own, and when, under the contract.

The FTC distinguishes BNPL, rent-to-own, lease-to-own and layaway; they are not interchangeable labels for the same arrangement. Its U.S. consumer guidance warns that longer rent-to-own or lease-to-own terms can reduce monthly payments while increasing the total cost. Under some such arrangements, returning an item may not get back amounts already paid, and missing a payment can mean losing both the item and payments. Read the contract for the specific offer. Legal rights and consequences depend on the contract and location, so do not assume U.S. guidance describes the rules where you live.

The large screen is ideal for multitasking, allowing apps and media to feel spacious and engaging even in a single glance.
Compare the plan’s total cost with what you would pay outright and with other practical options. If the terms are unclear, the total exceeds your ceiling, or the payment dates are difficult to meet, do not judge affordability by the installment alone. A lower-cost device or waiting until you can save may be safer than accepting a contract whose risks you cannot absorb.
Inspect the phone promptly when it arrives
Use the available return period actively. Save the listing, seller description, photos, written answers, order confirmation and payment terms. Set up and test the phone as soon as you reasonably can, following the maker’s instructions. If something differs from the description, document it and contact the seller promptly through a channel that keeps a record. Waiting may make it harder to use a short return window or meet a marketplace deadline.
For an iPhone, Apple’s pre-owned-phone guide recommends checking visible damage, charging, buttons, cameras, speakers, battery status, parts history and network lock. A practical inspection includes looking over the screen, sides, back and connector; charging the phone; trying the buttons and cameras; and checking that it can connect as expected. Apple says Parts and Service History can appear on supported models and software versions, so whether the section is available depends on the device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep a simple record of what you tested and any problem you found. If the phone is materially different from the listing or fails a promised function, contact the seller while the relevant return or claim period is still open and follow the written process. If a marketplace is involved, check its deadline and requirements too; do not assume that contacting the seller automatically pauses a platform deadline.
Make the decision listing by listing
A refurbished phone is a more defensible choice when the specific device fits your needs and budget, the seller explains its condition and battery clearly, the model is compatible and sufficiently supported, and the written remedy is workable if a problem appears. If you are considering payments, the full repayment and consequences should also be manageable. No grade, device age or payment label can substitute for those checks.
In an Associated Press discussion of used-device tradeoffs, CCS Insight’s Simon Bryant said, “You will get the best price if you’re prepared to handle that risk,” referring to buying from sellers where prices may be lower but guarantees weaker. A lower price can therefore come with less certainty. Choose the listing whose documented condition, cost and protections match the amount of risk you are willing to take—not simply the one with the lowest headline price.
