Before buying, verify the exact model’s runtime and fuel use at stated loads, safe fuel-storage directions, weight, noise, maintenance, warranty and service support in current manufacturer documents. Do not assume that diesel alone guarantees a particular runtime or makes a model suitable for your home.
How big of a generator do you need for your house?
Start with the circuits and appliances you consider essential during an outage, then identify which ones must operate simultaneously. Add their running demand and account for the higher starting demand that motors and pumps may draw. The generator must be able to support the combined load, including those starts, without exceeding its ratings.
- List essential loads. Write down the appliances and circuits you want available, such as refrigeration, lighting, a sump pump or selected heating equipment. Use appliance labels or manufacturer documentation for their electrical requirements.
- Separate running and starting demand. Motors and pumps can require extra power at startup. Check the appliance and generator specifications rather than sizing only from running watts.
- Check the generator’s continuous rating and starting capacity. Compare both ratings with the loads you expect to use together. Plan to switch off or stagger nonessential loads if they would push demand beyond the generator’s capability.
- Match voltage and receptacles. Confirm the generator’s available voltage and outlet configuration suit the appliances, cords, inlet and transfer equipment in your plan.
There is no single household generator size that fits every home. The right capacity depends on the actual loads, which can run together and the connection method.
What should you compare before buying a portable diesel generator?
Compare the specifications for the exact model and configuration, not a general assumption about diesel generators. A useful checklist is:
#1 Best Overall
- Robust and Portable: The generator features a sturdy steel frame with an integrated lifting eye, making it easy to transport and secure on the jobsite. It's a reliable power source for both remote locations and professional use
- Clean and Smooth Operation: With only 6% total harmonic distortion, this generator ensures the smooth operation of tools, appliances, and even sensitive electronics, offering peace of mind for your power needs
- Extended Runtime: The XD5000E from Generac features a 12-gallon diesel fuel tank provides an impressive run-time of 32.4 hours at 50% load, minimizing the need for frequent refueling and ensuring uninterrupted power supply for extended periods
- Industrial-Grade Diesel Engine: Equipped with a Yanmar LW Series 435cc air-cooled direct injection diesel engine, this generator is built to withstand heavy-duty use and provide reliable performance even in demanding environments
- Durable and Strong: The 1-1/4-inch steel cradle adds strength and durability to the generator, ensuring it can handle the rigors of the job site or other challenging situations. A dependable power source engineered to keep running when you need it most
- Electrical output: continuous watts or kilowatts, starting or surge rating, voltage and usable receptacles.
- Household fit: which planned circuits can run at once, and which large loads need to be switched off or staggered.
- Fuel logistics: runtime and fuel consumption at stated loads, refueling practicality, and the manufacturer’s instructions for storing and handling fuel. A runtime figure without its load conditions is not enough to plan outage coverage.
- Practical use: weight, wheels or handles, noise, starting procedure, maintenance intervals, warranty and local service availability.
- Safety documentation: operating and placement directions, wet-weather and grounding instructions, and whether the generator has a carbon-monoxide (CO) shutoff feature.
Portable diesel models’ output, runtime, fuel consumption, noise and ownership costs are model-specific; available evidence does not establish a comparable set of current models or a general diesel-specific performance advantage. Check current manufacturer specification sheets and manuals before making a decision.
Can you connect a portable generator to your house?
Yes, selected home circuits can be supplied through compatible transfer equipment installed for that purpose. A manual transfer switch isolates the generator from utility power, helps prevent dangerous backfeeding and lets you manage which loads are operating. The generator’s output and receptacles must match the switch and planned loads; nominal switch amperage alone does not establish compatibility. Generac’s guidance recommends having a qualified electrician select and install the equipment. Generac’s manual transfer switch explanation describes the selection factors.

Never connect a generator directly to building wiring. Before purchase, have the electrician confirm that the generator outlet, connection inlet, transfer switch, intended circuits and applicable local electrical requirements work together. Installation codes and permitting requirements vary by location, so check with the local authority as well as the electrician. A manufacturer’s example of a compatible switch setup applies to that configuration, not automatically to another generator. Generac’s product information illustrates why compatibility must be checked for the actual equipment.
How far away should a generator be from the house?
Operate a portable generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the home and other buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors and vents, as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises in its 2026 generator safety notice. Never run it in a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed area. The CPSC generator guidance says, “CO from a generator is deadly and can kill you in minutes.” The EPA’s outage guidance also says to operate fuel-powered portable generators outside and far from buildings.

CO is invisible and odorless. Keep working CO alarms indoors; EPA points to CPSC’s recommendation for alarms on every level outside sleeping areas. A generator with a CO shutoff feature is worth comparing, but it is an additional safeguard—not permission to operate near a building or in an enclosed space. Follow the owner’s manual, labels, maintenance directions and warnings.
How long will a portable diesel generator run?
There is no reliable universal runtime figure for portable diesel generators. Runtime depends on the specific model and operating load, so use the manufacturer’s figure only when it states the load conditions. Check fuel consumption at those same conditions, tank capacity and refueling instructions to judge whether the generator can cover the outage periods you anticipate. Do not treat a runtime quoted for one model or load as a promise for another.

Build fuel handling into the purchase decision: follow the exact model’s storage and handling directions and consider whether refueling is practical where the generator will be used. The available evidence does not establish portable diesel model-specific fuel numbers to compare, so a current manual or specification sheet is essential.

The CPSC reported in 2024 that an average of nearly 100 consumers in the United States die each year from CO poisoning involving portable generators, citing its latest report at that time. In the same notice, it estimated that standards PGMA G300-2018 and UL 2201 would reduce CO-poisoning deaths by 87% and 100%, respectively. Those are estimates about standards, not guaranteed outcomes for an individual generator or diesel-specific products. The CPSC’s 2024 notice provides the figures and safety guidance.
