For an ordinary merchant purchase in India, bank-account-to-bank-account UPI remains free for customers and merchants, according to NPCI. Before paying, check the checkout total, the limit on your own bank or app, and whether the merchant accepts your chosen method. If UPI will not cover the purchase, compare the merchant’s accepted card or bank-transfer options and verify any charges and timing with the provider. The best choice depends on the amount, acceptance, total cost and whether you want money debited from your account now or to borrow on a credit card.
Does UPI charge a fee for a large payment?
For a normal bank-account-to-bank-account UPI payment, NPCI says transactions continue to be free for customers and merchants. Its statement distinguishes those payments from interchange charges that can apply to certain merchant transactions made using a prepaid payment instrument (PPI) wallet. That interchange is not, by itself, a fee charged to an ordinary customer making a bank-account UPI payment. NPCI’s March 29, 2023 statement explains the distinction.

“UPI” can describe different funding routes, so check what the checkout screen actually proposes. A payment from your linked bank account is not the same as a payment made from a wallet, and a RuPay credit card linked to UPI is still a credit-card transaction. Check the displayed final amount and the terms for the specific route instead of assuming every UPI-linked payment has identical fees or funding.
This distinction matters most when a seller advertises a payment route simply as “UPI.” Before approving, look at the account, wallet or card shown as the funding source in the app. If you are paying directly from your bank account, NPCI’s statement applies to bank-account-to-bank-account transactions. If the selected source is a wallet or eligible credit card, do not automatically carry over that statement’s treatment to the other product. The charge, if any, and the way the transaction is treated depend on the route and its terms.

Also separate a payment-system charge from the amount the seller asks you to pay. A payment may be free at the payment-system level while the checkout total differs across payment options because the seller displays a method-specific charge or another fee. The useful question is not only “Is UPI free?” but “What exact amount will leave my account or become due on my card if I choose this option?” Check the last confirmation screen, not only an earlier price or banner.
Can you pay more than ₹1 lakh by UPI?
NPCI’s FAQ lists up to ₹1 lakh per transaction as the standard UPI limit. It also lists higher limits for specified categories, rather than establishing a higher general limit for shopping. In 2024, RBI announced that the UPI limit for tax payments would rise from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh per transaction; that is a tax-payment limit, not a general shopping allowance. See the NPCI UPI FAQ and RBI’s August 8, 2024 policy statement.
A published system limit is not a promise that your particular bank account or app will allow a payment of that size. Banks and apps may apply their own transaction or account controls, and the merchant’s setup must support the route. Check the limit for the exact account and payment method before relying on UPI for a time-sensitive purchase. If a payment is declined, do not assume that splitting it into several transfers is permitted or will work; first ask your bank or app about its rules and ask the merchant which other methods it accepts.

In practical terms, a large purchase can fall into three different situations. The total may be within the general UPI limit and your own account controls, so bank-account UPI could be available if the merchant accepts it. It may be within NPCI’s general limit but above your bank or app’s applicable limit, so the system-wide number will not make the payment go through. Or it may exceed the standard per-transaction limit, in which case you should not treat a higher category-specific limit as permission for ordinary shopping. Confirm the limit for the actual purchase category and account rather than relying on a general search result or an old transaction experience.
Ask both sides of the transaction if anything is uncertain: your bank or app can clarify what your account can send, and the merchant can confirm which payment routes its checkout accepts. A merchant might accept UPI for everyday payments but not have a working setup for the full amount or for a particular credit-card-linked route. There is no guarantee that breaking one purchase into multiple UPI payments will solve a limit issue, and doing so could conflict with account or merchant controls. Get confirmation before attempting a workaround.
When can a RuPay credit card be used through UPI?
NPCI says eligible RuPay credit cards can be linked to UPI and used to pay merchants through QR codes. This can provide a credit-funded option at a merchant that accepts the eligible QR payment, but it is subject to standard UPI transaction limits, the issuer’s assigned credit limit and the card’s terms. NPCI also lists excluded uses, including person-to-person transfers. Check the NPCI RuPay Credit Card on UPI information and confirm eligibility, permitted merchant category, charges and repayment terms with the card issuer before using the card for a large purchase.
There are several checks here, not just whether the card bears the RuPay name. First, the particular card must be eligible to link to UPI. Second, the merchant’s QR payment must be a permitted merchant transaction; person-to-person transfers and other excluded uses are not the intended route. Third, the standard UPI transaction limit still applies, and the issuer’s credit limit must have enough available credit for the purchase. A payment can fail if any one of those conditions is not met.

Finally, confirm the issuer’s terms. A UPI interface does not turn the card into a bank-account payment: the purchase uses credit and must be repaid under the card agreement. Check any applicable charge, billing and repayment terms before choosing it. Do not use the card merely because a QR code is present or assume that all QR transactions qualify. If the issuer or merchant cannot confirm eligibility, ask which other accepted method can complete the purchase.
Do not assume that a credit-card route is cheaper because it runs through UPI, or that it provides a particular reward or purchase protection. Those benefits and costs depend on the issuer and card product. Compare the actual amount due, any applicable card charges, and how and when you will repay the balance.
That comparison is especially important when the card payment postpones an immediate bank-account debit. Credit can be useful if it matches your repayment plan, but it is still borrowing, not a fee-free substitute for money in the account. The available information does not establish one universal interest rate, reward structure or protection for all RuPay cards. Read the terms for your own card rather than putting a speculative reward or benefit into the calculation.
Can a shop add a card fee?
RBI’s public response says it has not issued instructions on levying charges for credit-card transactions. That statement does not establish a universal rule that every credit-card surcharge is either allowed or prohibited, nor does it tell you what a particular merchant or issuer will charge. Ask the merchant whether a fee applies and check the amount shown before authorising payment. For a disputed credit-card charge, RBI directs customers first to the card issuer and, if needed, to RBI’s complaint process. RBI’s response, dated June 7, 2022, sets out its position.

If you cannot see the final payable amount, ask the merchant or payment provider to explain it before proceeding.
Debit-card treatment is different from credit-card treatment. RBI’s payment-aggregator directions say debit-card merchant discount rate (MDR) must not be passed on to customers; other charges, such as a convenience fee, if any, are to be displayed before payment. Do not apply that debit-card rule to a credit-card transaction. Consult the RBI payment-aggregator and payment-gateway directions and review the checkout total for the specific method you select.

The distinction between a debit-card MDR and a displayed convenience fee is worth keeping clear. The cited RBI direction says the MDR must not be passed on to the customer; it also says other charges, if any, are to be shown before payment. It does not make the credit-card question identical. If you are being asked to pay more with a credit card, check the exact charge and raise a dispute with the issuer if you believe it is incorrect. RBI’s public response identifies the issuer as the first point of contact for a disputed credit-card charge and points to RBI’s complaint process if needed.
How to compare UPI, card and bank transfer
Use the final amount payable, not a general claim that one payment method is “free,” as the starting point. A payment can be free at the payment-system level while a different route, service or disclosed merchant charge changes what you owe. Compare the options the seller actually accepts against these factors:
- Total charge: Check whether the displayed checkout amount changes when you select the method. Ask about any fee before authorising payment.
- Amount and limits: Confirm that the method can handle the full purchase in one payment under your bank, app or card account’s current controls.
- Acceptance: Verify the merchant accepts that method and, for RuPay credit card on UPI, that the transaction is an eligible merchant use.
- Funding and repayment: UPI from a bank account debits your account; a credit-card payment uses credit and must be repaid under the issuer’s terms.
- Timing and confirmation: Ask the bank or merchant how the selected transfer method is processed and when the seller will treat the payment as received, especially before sending a large amount.
These factors can point in different directions. A method with no additional displayed charge is not useful if the seller cannot accept it or your account cannot send the amount. A method that the merchant accepts may still be unsuitable if its credit terms do not fit your repayment plan. Treat each option as a combination of price, limits, acceptance and funding, rather than ranking payment methods by a single label.
For NEFT and RTGS, RBI’s payment-system benchmark report provides general regulatory context: online NEFT transfers initiated by savings-account holders have been free since January 1, 2020, and RBI-operated RTGS and NEFT processing charges were waived. This does not guarantee the current tariff for every bank, account type or channel. Check your bank’s current schedule and the payment details before initiating a transfer. RBI’s Benchmarking India’s Payment Systems describes those benchmarks.
In other words, the RBI benchmark figures help frame a comparison but should not replace a current bank tariff check. The relevant charge can depend on your bank, account type and channel. Before initiating an NEFT or RTGS payment, verify the bank’s current schedule and the route offered for your account. Ask the merchant whether it accepts that transfer and how it will confirm receipt. This is particularly useful when the seller needs to match a transfer to a purchase before treating the transaction as complete.
Bank transfer and card payments also differ in how the money is funded. A bank-account UPI payment uses funds in the linked account and is debited there. A card payment uses the card issuer’s credit, with repayment governed by card terms. The relevant choice is therefore not simply “which has the smallest fee?” Consider whether you are comfortable with an immediate debit or would rather use credit that you can repay as agreed. Do not count assumed rewards or purchase protection as guaranteed savings; check the issuer and product terms first.

A practical decision sequence before paying
- Review the checkout total. Select the intended payment method and note the final payable amount. Ask the merchant whether any method-specific charge applies if the amount is unclear.
- Check the payment limit. Confirm your own bank or app limit and the merchant’s acceptance setup. Treat NPCI’s standard UPI limit as a general system limit, not proof that your account can send the full amount.
- Validate credit-card-on-UPI eligibility. If considering a RuPay credit card, confirm that your card can be linked, the merchant transaction is permitted, your available credit covers it, and the issuer’s fees and repayment terms suit you.
- Ask about alternatives if the route will not work. Check which card or bank-transfer methods the merchant accepts. Before transferring, verify the bank’s current charge and expected processing timing for your account and channel.
- Choose based on the actual trade-off. Compare the total charged, the probability of successful acceptance, the funding source and any credit cost. Do not count on rewards, savings or purchase protections unless the specific issuer terms confirm them.
Before you begin, it can help to identify the exact source of funds you intend to use. “UPI” may lead to a bank account, a wallet or an eligible RuPay card, and each route has different conditions. Choose the source deliberately, then verify that the checkout still shows the expected total. If the payment screen changes the selected route or total during checkout, stop and review it rather than authorising by habit.
If the payment is close to a limit or the purchase is time-sensitive, make the checks before reaching the payment counter or submitting an order. Confirm the per-transaction limit with the specific bank or app, and confirm the seller will accept the chosen route for the full amount. If the route fails, do not repeatedly retry or assume a series of smaller payments is acceptable. Contact the bank or app for its rules and ask the seller about an alternate accepted method.
For a bank transfer, add the bank-tariff and timing checks before sending money, not after. For a credit-card route, add the eligibility, available-credit and repayment checks. For a debit-card option, distinguish the MDR rule from any other displayed charge. Those checks keep an apparently simple “choose a payment method” decision tied to the actual terms that apply to your transaction.

If your purchase is within the limit available on your account and the merchant accepts it, bank-account UPI is a straightforward option; NPCI says bank-account-to-bank-account UPI remains free to customers and merchants. If the purchase exceeds your usable UPI limit, or the merchant’s setup cannot accept it, ask for an accepted card or bank-transfer route and compare the amount charged and timing. Use RuPay credit card on UPI only after confirming the card and merchant are eligible and that the credit terms make sense for you. There is no universally best route: the right choice is the one that can complete the purchase at an acceptable total cost using a funding source you are comfortable with.
A useful final check is to say the choice back in concrete terms: “This route is accepted by this merchant, can cover this full amount under my account or card limits, shows this total, and uses a funding source whose terms I understand.” If you cannot confirm one of those points, pause and ask the bank, app, issuer or merchant before paying. That extra check is more reliable than assuming a method is automatically cheapest or available because it worked for a smaller transaction before.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does UPI charge a fee for a big payment?
NPCI says ordinary bank-account-to-bank-account UPI transactions remain free for customers and merchants. That statement does not make wallet or credit-card-linked routes identical. Check the funding source and final checkout amount for the specific payment.

Can I pay more than ₹1 lakh by UPI?
NPCI lists ₹1 lakh per transaction as the standard UPI limit, with separate higher limits for specified categories. RBI’s ₹5 lakh limit announced in 2024 applies to tax payments, not ordinary shopping. Your bank or app may also apply its own controls, so confirm your account’s limit and the merchant’s setup.
Will a shop charge extra if I use a credit card?
RBI says it has not issued instructions on levying credit-card transaction charges; that does not establish a universal surcharge rule. Ask the merchant and check the final amount before authorising. If you dispute a charge, contact the card issuer first and use RBI’s complaint process if needed.

Should I use UPI, a card, or a bank transfer for a large purchase?
Compare the final amount, whether the merchant accepts the method, the limits that apply to your account or card, and whether payment comes from your bank balance or card credit. For NEFT or RTGS, check your bank’s current tariff and processing timing. No one method is universally best.
Can I use a RuPay credit card on UPI for any QR payment?
No. NPCI describes eligible RuPay credit cards being used for merchant QR payments, subject to UPI limits, issuer credit limits and card terms. Excluded uses include person-to-person transfers. Confirm card and merchant eligibility with NPCI’s guidance and your issuer.
Are NEFT and RTGS always free?
RBI’s benchmark report gives general context, including free online NEFT transfers initiated by savings-account holders since January 1, 2020, and waived RBI-operated RTGS and NEFT processing charges. It is not a guarantee of every bank’s current tariff for every account or channel; check your bank’s schedule.
The Bottom Line
For a large purchase, compare the final checkout total, your actual account or card limit, merchant acceptance and funding terms. Bank-account UPI remains free for customers and merchants according to NPCI, but wallet and credit-card-linked routes have different conditions. Check your own bank’s current transfer tariff and the issuer’s terms before choosing another route.
