Choose a payment provider for an industrial marketplace by mapping how buyer payments, seller balances, fees, refunds and payouts need to work, then checking each provider against your seller and buyer countries, risk responsibilities and full costs. A standard checkout gateway may process a buyer’s payment; a marketplace arrangement may also need to onboard and verify third-party sellers, allocate money among them and the platform, and pay sellers out.
Start with the transaction flow, not the provider name
Before comparing services, document what happens from checkout through payout. A marketplace order can involve more than one seller, platform fees, partial shipments, returns or disputes, so the payment design should reflect the actual order and business model.
- Who appears to the buyer as the seller or payee, and which party accepts the payment?
- Can one order include goods from multiple sellers? If so, how should the buyer’s payment and fees be allocated?
- How does the platform earn money, and when should it receive its fee?
- What should happen to seller funds when an order is cancelled, partially refunded, disputed or charged back?
- When should each seller be paid, and who is responsible if a seller’s balance becomes negative?
These answers determine which payment flow to evaluate. Stripe describes direct charges, destination charges collected by the platform, and splits between multiple sellers in its Connect marketplace documentation. Adyen documents allocations to seller and platform balance accounts, including splitting a payment, capture or refund. Its payment-processing documentation warns that missing split instructions can cause the whole transaction amount and fees to be booked to the platform’s liable account. Treat these as implementation patterns to discuss with the provider, not legal or accounting advice.
Check whether your platform and sellers are eligible
List the platform’s legal entity type and country, then do the same for the sellers you expect to onboard. Ask each provider to confirm eligibility for those specific entities, countries, beneficial owners and industrial product categories, along with any limits tied to your expected transaction profile. A provider’s ability to onboard marketplace users does not mean it will approve every business model.

Also make sure the onboarding process is workable for suppliers. Find out what identity and business information sellers must provide, who reviews it, and how unresolved verification requests affect their ability to accept orders or receive payouts. Stripe says Connect handles identity verification, KYC and sanctions checks; Adyen documents marketplace-user onboarding and verification; and Worldpay’s API flow includes party creation and an option to request identity verification. Those descriptions establish documented functions, not approval for a particular industrial marketplace.
Map payment methods, currencies and payout routes
Build a corridor list before treating a provider’s geographic reach as a fit. For each expected flow, record the buyer’s country, seller’s country, payment currency, desired settlement currency, buyer payment method and seller payout instrument. Ask the provider to confirm every relevant combination in writing, including cross-border flows.

Stripe describes global payouts, Adyen publishes supported regions for its marketplace service, and Worldpay advertises broad currency acceptance and international payouts. Those general descriptions do not establish that your platform location, a particular seller country, currency and payout instrument are supported together. Check current documentation and obtain confirmation for the actual business footprint.
Set payout timing and fund-handling rules
Decide when a seller should receive money: immediately, on a schedule, after shipment or delivery, or after a return or dispute window. Specify whether you need balances, reserves, deductions, multiple recipients or manual payout controls. Then ask which of those controls are available for your markets and what limits or conditions apply under the proposed setup.

The providers describe different payout approaches: Stripe documents standard bank payouts and split payouts; Adyen describes managed payouts or custom control over payout timing, and says its platform can hold funds until payout; Worldpay describes automated weekly scheduled payouts. The exact timing available depends on the setup, geography and contract. Do not call a marketplace balance or delayed payout “escrow” unless the provider and qualified counsel confirm that characterization.
Define responsibility for risk, refunds and reconciliation
For each transaction stage, establish who makes decisions and who bears the financial and operational consequences. Cover seller onboarding reviews, fraud controls, refunds, chargebacks, seller negative balances, payout failures and customer-support escalations. Ask how partial captures, partial refunds and disputes affect the original allocation to sellers and the platform.

Review the operational records as carefully as the payment flow. Confirm what transaction-level data, reports, event notifications and exports are available, how they support bookkeeping and reconciliation, and how quickly your team can investigate a payout or refund discrepancy. Stripe presents configurable fraud tooling and managed risk options; Adyen documents risk-management features and reporting for bookkeeping and reconciliation; Worldpay documents optional 3-D Secure and fraud features. Feature descriptions alone do not settle contractual liability or support responsibilities.

The official product pages cited here do not establish comparable pricing for a defined industrial marketplace, so they cannot support a universal cheapest-provider ranking. Compare the written proposals against the same flows and assumptions rather than comparing headline rates alone.
What the provider documentation establishes
This is a shortlist of documented marketplace capabilities, not a performance ranking or endorsement. The remaining questions are specific to the business and should be resolved with each provider.
| Provider | Documented marketplace capabilities | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe Connect | Direct charges, destination charges, splits between multiple sellers, payouts, seller onboarding and verification, and risk tools. | Country and seller eligibility; responsibility for disputes and losses; payout timing; and full fees for the proposed flow. |

Capability pages do not establish relative approval rates, reliability, conversion performance, total cost or suitability for a particular industrial category. Confirm those points in the provider’s proposal, technical plan and contract.
