How to Choose a Freestyle Skateboard: Shapes, Sizes and Setup

Choose a freestyle skateboard by matching its dimensions and kick shape to the tricks you want to practice, then verify components and regional stock.

For flat-ground freestyle, choose a board for the footwork and tricks you want to learn—not simply the widest deck or a pro’s setup. Start with the dimensions, then decide between double- and single-kick shapes, and check whether a listing is a complete board or a deck only. No independent head-to-head testing supports naming one model the “best”; the options below are ways to narrow your choice, not performance rankings.

What makes a skateboard suited to freestyle?

Freestyle focuses on flat-ground skating: intricate footwork, board manipulation and choreographed routines. SkateSetups describes freestyle equipment as emphasizing board feel and precision, which makes shape and dimensions especially relevant when choosing a setup. This is a different decision from choosing a general-purpose deck solely for stability.

As a starting point, Waltz Skateboarding describes freestyle decks as usually 26–30 inches long, 7.25–8 inches wide, with wheelbases of 11.5–13.75 inches. These are descriptive ranges from a specialist manufacturer’s guide, not a fit standard. Your preferred feel and the exact product dimensions matter more than matching every number in the range.

What board should I get? Choose by riding style

Classic freestyle footwork and rail tricks

If your priority is classic freestyle tricks such as pogos, caspers, fingerflips and some wheelies, consider a single-kick deck: it has an upturned tail and a flat nose. Waltz says this shape can make those tricks easier, but notes that some ollie tricks may suffer and some riders find certain single-kick decks less responsive. A single kick is a trade-off, not a universal upgrade.

Ollies, shuvits and broader nose-and-tail options

A double-kick deck has an upturned nose and tail. Waltz says many freestyle skaters prefer this configuration for learning footwork, ollies and shuvits. The guide cautions that pogos, caspers and fingerflips may be more difficult on this shape than on a single kick.

A mixed freestyle and street approach

If you want to mix flat-ground freestyle with street-style tricks, a double kick is a reasonable shape to consider because it offers upturned ends at both sides. That does not establish that it will suit every mixed rider: compare the exact nose and tail profiles, dimensions and concave, and prioritize the tricks you expect to practice most.

How do deck size, symmetry and concave affect the choice?

Width, length and wheelbase

Waltz’s 7.25–8-inch width range is a useful place to start when browsing specialist decks. SkateSetups’ 2026 page reports a different snapshot: among five professional freestyle skaters in its database, 60.0% rode 8.25-inch decks, the average width was 8.17 inches, and 80.0% rode decks between 8.0 and 8.5 inches wide. The difference between these figures is a reason to treat them as reference points rather than rules: the database is a small sample of tracked pros, not a beginner survey or a controlled comparison.

Check a listing’s stated length and wheelbase as well as width. Waltz gives 26–30 inches for length and 11.5–13.75 inches for wheelbase as typical descriptive ranges. If the retailer does not state a dimension, ask before ordering rather than assuming it from a product name or width.

Symmetrical or asymmetrical?

A symmetrical deck has matching nose and tail dimensions and profiles. An asymmetrical deck varies those ends, which Waltz says can offer different options for tricks. Choose based on the end shapes and tricks you want; symmetry alone does not prove that a deck is better.

Concave and spoon noses

Waltz says freestyle decks are generally mellower in concave than typical street or vert decks. Its own spoon-nose design is described as combining single-kick strengths with a slight nose kick and continuous tub concave. That is the maker’s description of its design, not an independent test result.

Powell Peralta Andy Anderson Heron Flight Skateboard Deck - (8.45" x 31.8")
  • Deck Width = 8.45" / Deck Length = 31.8"
  • Wheelbase = 14.25" / Deck Nose = 6.68" / Deck Tail = 6.68"
  • FLIGHT Deck Construction: THINNER, STRONGER, LONGER LASTING, and MADE IN THE USA / Materials include U.S. hard rock maple, high strength fiberglass
  • Shape 289 / Concave K20
  • Deck Only, Grip Tape Not Included

Do you need a complete skateboard or just a deck?

A deck-only listing is not a complete setup. Before buying, verify whether the product includes trucks, wheels, bearings, grip tape and mounting hardware. Compare the full list of included parts rather than relying on “complete” in a product name, and check that any separately selected components fit the deck width and your intended use.

For component context, SkateSetups reports that the average wheel size among the five pros in its 2026 database was 51.3 mm, with 52 mm the most common size at 40.0%. Tensor was the most frequently listed truck brand at 40.0%. Those figures describe that small tracked sample; they do not make a particular wheel size or truck brand mandatory. The page also says shoe choices are distributed and affected by sponsorship, so the sample does not establish an objectively superior shoe brand.

Are these specialist boards available?

PROTOSTYLE

PROTOSTYLE describes itself as a Malaysian freestyle skateboard brand. Its storefront lists a 7.375-inch symmetrical freestyle deck and a matching 7.375-inch complete; both were marked out of stock when the page was accessed. The store also lists TEPiSKATE! freestyle wheels and other completes. Treat those as examples of products and categories, not as currently purchasable recommendations: stock can change, and the displayed market context is Malaysia.

Waltz Skateboarding

Waltz’s guide is accompanied by a storefront offering freestyle decks and components. The company describes itself as a community of freestyle skateboarders designing decks, trucks, wheels and accessories. This makes it a relevant specialist brand to compare when shopping, but it does not establish independent testing of its products or guarantee stock in your region.

How to choose your first freestyle board

  1. List the tricks you want to practice. For ollies and shuvits, compare double-kick options; for pogos, caspers, fingerflips or some wheelies, consider whether a single kick’s flat nose fits your priorities.
  2. Use dimensions as a filter, not a rule. Compare the retailer’s width, length and wheelbase with Waltz’s descriptive ranges and decide which dimensions feel appropriate for you.
  3. Inspect the shape details. Check whether the deck is symmetrical, how the nose and tail differ, and whether the concave is described as mellow. Distinguish a manufacturer’s design claims from independent performance evidence.
  4. Confirm what is included. Establish whether you are buying a deck or a complete and verify each component in the listing.
  5. Check stock and region before paying. Specialist inventory changes, and a listing or price shown for one market may not be available where you live.
