Choose a diesel transfer tank by matching its capacity to the equipment you refuel and your refill schedule, then confirm that its pump, mounting arrangement, and documented fuel and transport uses fit your setup. There is no universal best size: a tank that reduces fuel runs still has to fit the vehicle or trailer carrying it and comply with requirements that apply to the tank, route, and worksite.
Start with fuel demand and carrying limits
Estimate how much diesel the equipment uses between refills and how often you want to replenish the transfer tank. Then balance that need against the volume and weight your truck, trailer, or other carrier can accommodate. A larger tank can reduce refill trips, but capacity alone does not determine whether it is practical for your operation.
Standard Technologies lists diesel transfer tanks in capacities from 30 to 109 gallons. That range describes the manufacturer’s available products, not a recommended size for every farm or construction operation. Choose a pump configuration that suits the job
Tank configuration and dispensing method are separate decisions. Some listed models are tank-only; the manufacturer also describes optional pump configurations, including a 15 GPM 12-volt electric pump and an HP-100-UL manual pump. These are model specifications, not a guarantee of the same performance or compatibility across tanks. - Manual pump: Consider whether manual operation fits the frequency and volume of your refueling work; confirm the pump is offered for the tank you select.
- 12-volt electric pump: Check the exact pump’s compatibility and available electrical power where you will dispense fuel.
Verify the tank’s intended fuel and use

Determine which workplace rules apply
Requirements depend on the use and setting. OSHA’s general-industry flammable-liquids standard, 29 CFR 1910.106, includes provisions concerning tank construction, approved containers and portable tanks, and portable-tank emergency venting. Which provisions apply depends on the circumstances; consult the standard for the applicable context. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106
For construction, OSHA’s June 9, 2000 interpretation addresses a specific question about a 1,000-gallon diesel storage tank and application of 29 CFR 1926.152. It is an example tied to that scenario, not a universal buying rule for truck-mounted or mobile transfer tanks.
