Choose a crypto wallet by deciding who should control the keys, how you will use the wallet, and how you will recover access—not by assuming that one wallet type is safest for everyone. For frequent payments, convenience and exact network support matter; for less frequent storage, direct key control and offline access may matter more. In either case, understand the recovery process and fees before moving funds.
Understand what a crypto wallet does
A wallet is an interface for accessing crypto through private keys; the assets themselves are represented on their respective blockchains, not stored inside the wallet. The SEC explains this distinction in its December 12, 2025 investor bulletin.
Start with two separate questions: who controls access to the keys, and how is the wallet connected or stored? The SEC notes that hot and cold options exist for both self-custody and third-party custody. “Hot” and “cold” do not tell you by themselves who controls the keys.
Choose who controls the keys
Self-custody: you control the keys
With self-custody, you control the private keys and are responsible for securing them and the recovery material. This gives you direct key control, but losing, damaging, or exposing key material can mean permanent loss of access. The SEC’s wallet guidance and Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance explain these risks.

Third-party custody: a provider controls access
An exchange or dedicated custodian manages key access for you. A provider may offer account recovery, which can be more convenient than managing a recovery phrase yourself. You also depend on that provider: a hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy can affect your ability to access assets. Review the provider’s recovery process and account terms rather than treating account access as guaranteed.
Decide whether a hot or cold setup fits your use
A hot wallet is connected to the internet, which can make it practical for regular transactions. A cold wallet keeps keys offline and may suit someone prioritizing offline storage. Neither label is a complete security assessment: setup, key protection, recovery, and the user’s transaction habits still matter.

When a hardware wallet may make sense
A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep keys offline. It may suit someone who wants offline storage and is prepared to manage the device and its recovery material securely. Consider its purchase cost, supported assets and networks, and how well its transaction workflow fits your needs. A hardware device does not remove the need to protect the recovery phrase or guarantee support for every asset.
Plan recovery before transferring funds
A recovery phrase can restore a self-custody wallet, but anyone who obtains it may be able to access the assets. Ethereum.org describes it as the wallet’s “master key” in its security guidance. Keep it private, protect it from loss or damage, and learn the wallet’s restoration procedure before relying on it.

- For self-custody, identify how the wallet is restored and what backup material is required.
- For third-party custody, check how account recovery works and what happens if you cannot use the usual sign-in method.
- Do not transfer meaningful funds until you understand and can follow the relevant recovery route.
Check asset, network, fees, and payment timing
Before making a payment or transfer, confirm that the wallet supports the exact asset and network you intend to use. A wallet supporting an asset on one network does not establish that it supports the same asset on another. Verify the current supported networks with the wallet provider or custodian.
Check the fees that apply to your specific wallet and transaction, including network charges and any custody, account, or transfer fees. Wallets may involve transaction fees, and hardware devices have a purchase cost; current amounts depend on the provider and transaction.
