How to Choose a Crypto Exchange for Spot and Derivatives Trading

A practical checklist for comparing crypto exchanges by jurisdiction, spot and futures products, full trading costs, execution, custody and protections.

Choose a crypto exchange by checking the legal entity that would serve you, whether it may offer your specific product where you live, and the costs and terms of the exact markets you plan to use. Compare spot separately from perpetual and fixed-expiry futures: they involve different assets, obligations, fees and risks. A familiar brand, a low advertised trading fee or authorization for one service does not establish that every product is suitable or covered.

What should you check first?

Start with your location and the exchange’s legal entity—not its brand name. A global platform may use different companies in different countries, and those companies may have different permissions and product availability. Find the entity named in the account agreement and identify the entity responsible for your account, custody and the product you want to trade.

  1. Confirm availability: Check the venue’s current country or state eligibility terms for your residence and the specific service. Do not infer that a spot account means derivatives are available to you.
  2. Identify the legal entity: Read the account terms and regulatory disclosures. Record the entity’s full legal name and the regulator or register relevant to your location.
  3. Verify the product permission: Check whether that entity may provide the particular spot or derivatives service. A company’s status for one activity does not automatically cover its other products.
  4. Check the regulator’s record: Where applicable, review registration and disciplinary history in an official register. Treat registration as a status check, not a guarantee against fraud or loss.

United States

For derivatives, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says derivatives intermediaries generally must be registered and recommends checking registration and disciplinary history through NFA BASIC where applicable. The CFTC distinguishes this from virtual-currency spot platforms, which it says are not required to register with the CFTC; other federal and state requirements or checks may still matter. Consult the CFTC’s registration and background guidance, and verify the current status of the actual entity serving you. The CFTC also warns that using an offshore firm can leave customers with fewer protections.

European Union

MiCA sets requirements for crypto-asset trading platforms and exchange services within its applicable scope. Check which entity and services are covered, and consult current national and EU registers. ESMA has warned that investors should not assume authorization for one service extends to other products offered by the same provider; its 11 July 2025 warning describes this risk as a “halo effect.”

United Kingdom

Regulatory rules can have different application dates and scopes. The FCA reports that final rules and guidance published on 30 June 2026 apply to cryptoasset firms granted permission under FSMA on or after 25 October 2027. That future application date should not be read as a rule already applying to every crypto firm today. Check the firm’s current status and the regime applicable to its specific service.

Which product are you actually comparing?

Spot trading and derivatives are not interchangeable ways to buy crypto. A spot trade exchanges the crypto-asset itself; a derivatives trade creates exposure through a contract. Before comparing venues, write down the pair or contract you intend to use, the settlement asset, and any financing or expiry feature.

Product What you trade Key cost or term to inspect
Spot The crypto-asset itself, subject to the venue’s custody and settlement arrangements. Pair availability, spread, trading fee, conversion costs, and deposit and withdrawal terms.
Perpetual future A derivative contract with no expiry date. Funding payments between long and short holders, as well as margin, liquidation and settlement terms.
Fixed-maturity future A derivative contract with a defined expiration date. Expiry and settlement rules, alongside margin, liquidation and any applicable contract costs.

Perpetual futures use periodic funding payments as a mechanism to keep contract prices anchored to spot; the payment’s direction and amount can affect the cost of holding a position. Fixed-maturity futures instead have defined expirations. These are structural differences, not just different labels. The Guide to Crypto Markets 2026 explains these contract features.

For any derivatives contract, inspect initial and maintenance margin, liquidation methodology, mark-price rules, funding schedule and history, settlement asset, auto-deleveraging or insurance-fund terms, maximum order or position size, and the venue’s outage policy. Do not treat a platform’s advertised maximum leverage as a suggested level: leverage magnifies exposure, and contract rules determine how losses and liquidations are handled. The CFTC states, “Derivatives products are generally considered high-risk,” and advises understanding how a strategy can make or lose money and what fees and other costs apply.

How do you compare the real cost of trading?

A maker/taker fee is only one component of cost. Compare the whole path from funding the account to opening, holding and closing a position, using the exact market and order size you expect to trade.

  • Trading fees: Check the current maker and taker schedule, including any conditions for lower tiers or discounts.
  • Spread and slippage: Compare the bid-ask spread and available order-book depth on the exact pair or contract. A small headline fee can be outweighed by a worse execution price.
  • Derivatives carrying costs: Include perpetual funding and any borrowing, margin or other position charges that apply to your contract and holding period.
  • Conversion and funding: Check the cost of converting between fiat currencies or crypto-assets, plus deposit and payment-method charges.
  • Withdrawals: Check withdrawal fees, supported networks or methods, minimums and any restrictions or processing terms.
  • Order handling: Review supported order types, execution and cancellation rules, and how the venue handles outages or delayed settlement.

In the EU, MiCA Article 76 addresses platform rules, fair and transparent fees, resilient systems, bid/ask depth, transaction data and settlement. Article 77 addresses published pricing or pricing methods and order finality. These requirements apply within their legal scope; they are not proof that every exchange worldwide meets them or that a particular trade will execute at a given price. See ESMA’s MiCA Article 76 and Article 77.

How can you judge liquidity and execution?

Liquidity is market-specific. A platform’s overall trading volume or a deep BTC market does not establish that the smaller pair or derivatives contract you want will have comparable depth. Compare order books and published trade information for the actual markets you expect to use.

  • Look at the bid-ask spread and the quantity available at several price levels, not only the best quote.
  • Consider whether an order of your likely size could move through the available depth and produce slippage.
  • Check whether the venue publishes transaction data and explains how orders are handled, made final or settled.
  • Consider system resilience and the venue’s stated procedures for outages, disruptions and delayed withdrawals or settlements.

These checks help assess execution conditions; they cannot guarantee the price or speed of a future order, especially during volatile markets.

What custody and account protections apply?

Trading features do not tell you who controls assets or what recourse you have if a platform fails. Crypto platforms may combine exchange, broker and custody roles, creating potential conflicts. Read the account and custody terms to understand who holds assets, whether you can withdraw them, how withdrawals may be restricted, and what happens to customer assets under the relevant legal arrangements.

Investor.gov says crypto-asset accounts do not receive the bank-deposit or SIPC protections described for other accounts. Its investor alert on crypto-asset securities also discusses risks arising when platforms combine services. Do not treat a platform’s assurances or a proof-of-reserves snapshot as a guarantee of solvency or a substitute for understanding custody terms.

If you buy spot assets and choose to withdraw them, self-custody is an option, not a requirement for selecting an exchange. Investor.gov describes a wallet as a device or program through which users generally access crypto-assets using public and private cryptographic keys. A hardware wallet for cryptocurrency does not remove key-management risk and does not protect assets left with an exchange.

Comparison area Questions to answer
Eligibility and legal status Which country or state is supported? What exact entity serves the account? Is the specific service permitted, and what do relevant official registers show?
Product match Are the spot pairs or derivatives contracts available? What are the contract type, settlement currency, size, expiry or funding mechanism, margin model and supported order types?
Total cost What are the trading fees, spread, likely slippage, funding or borrowing charges, conversion costs, and deposit and withdrawal fees?
Liquidity and execution What depth and spread does the exact market show? What transaction data, order-handling rules, settlement terms and outage procedures are published?
Custody and operations Who holds the assets? What withdrawal limits or controls apply? How are settlement, support requests and operational interruptions handled?
Risk and protections How are margin calls and liquidations determined? What conflicts may arise from bundled services? What legal recourse or account protections do—and do not—apply?

Use the venue’s current official terms for its own fees, contracts and custody arrangements. If a term is not clearly stated, do not assume the most favorable interpretation; contact the provider or choose a product whose terms you can verify.
