How to Choose a Crypto ETF: Liquidity, Fees, Custody, and Tracking

Choosing a crypto ETF means comparing total fees, the spread you pay on an order, who holds the coins, and how closely the fund tracks its benchmark on the same date.

To choose a crypto ETF, check five things for each candidate on the same date: the total yearly cost of holding it, the trading cost you pay on an order, who holds the underlying coins, how closely the fund’s net asset value (NAV) follows its benchmark and how the share price compares with NAV, and what legal structure you are actually buying. The examples here are U.S.-listed spot bitcoin products. Ether products need the same checks, but against their own benchmark and custody terms.

Start with the legal structure of the product

“Crypto ETF” is shorthand for several different exchange-traded products. Many U.S. spot bitcoin products are organized as a commodity trust or another exchange-traded product rather than as a registered investment company. The iShares Bitcoin Trust prospectus states that the trust is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. The investor protections that framework provides do not apply to that trust in the same way, so do not assume that a product with an ETF label has the same legal status as a mutual fund or a conventional stock ETF.

Before comparing numbers, open the prospectus and find the first pages that describe what the trust is and what it holds. Then read the risk section for the specific product, not a generic summary of the category.

Fees: the headline rate is only the start

The sponsor fee

The iShares Bitcoin Trust prospectus, dated July 2025, states a 0.25% annualized sponsor fee that accrues daily at an annualized rate equal to 0.25% of NAV. That is a fund-specific figure from one filing, not a ranking of current products, and fund fees can change. Confirm the number in each fund’s current prospectus before relying on it.

Because the fee is charged against NAV, the dollar amount you pay moves with the value of the fund. As a simple illustration, if a $10,000 position stayed at $10,000 for a full year, a 0.25% fee would accrue to $25. If the position grew to $20,000, the same rate would accrue to a larger dollar amount, and a fall in value would reduce it.

Waivers and their end dates

A sponsor may waive part of its fee for a period. A fee that looks low during a waiver can rise when the waiver ends. Find the fee table in the prospectus, note the stated annual rate, and check whether any waiver applies and when it expires. Record both numbers, because a comparison based only on the waived rate can be misleading.

Costs outside the headline fee

The iShares prospectus also describes possible extraordinary expenses and transaction costs. Those costs are not part of the sponsor fee, so they will not appear in the number most websites quote. Search the fee and expense section for these terms and note whether the filing describes any limits on them.

Liquidity: the price you actually pay on an order

Bid-ask spread and depth

For a retail investor, the number that matters is the spread on the size of order you plan to place, at the time of day you plan to trade. Your broker’s quote screen or exchange data will show the best bid, the best ask, and the displayed size at each price. Depth is the number of shares available near those prices. A narrow quoted spread with thin depth can still produce a poor fill on a larger order.

Spreads can differ between the opening and closing periods and midday, so check them at the time you expect to trade rather than relying on a single snapshot.

Trading volume is context, not your cost

Daily trading volume tells you how much of the share class changes hands, which helps you judge how active the market is. It does not tell you what you will pay on your own order. Large volume does not guarantee a cheap trade, so do not treat it as a substitute for checking the spread.

Use limit orders

A limit order sets the highest price you will pay or the lowest you will accept. A market order fills at whatever price is available, which can be meaningfully worse than the last quote when the spread is wide or the displayed size is small. Using a limit order is the most direct way to control execution cost on any ETF share, including crypto ETFs.

Why most investors trade shares rather than creating them

The creation and redemption process works through authorized participants, who transact directly with the trust in large baskets. Retail investors generally buy and sell individual shares on an exchange rather than using that process. The iShares prospectus says that market prices may differ from NAV, which is why the share price comparison in the tracking section matters.

Access and account requirements

Before you choose a product, confirm that your brokerage account can trade the specific share class you are considering. Check the commission schedule, any markup on the quoted price, and whether the platform applies different order-routing or fill practices to exchange-traded products. These terms are set by each broker and can change, so verify them directly with the provider.

Custody: who holds the coins

Named custodians

The iShares Bitcoin Trust names Coinbase Custody as its bitcoin custodian and Anchorage Digital Bank as an available alternative. Its prospectus says the sponsor determines whether and how much bitcoin is held at either custodian. That means the holding may be concentrated at one custodian or divided between two, and the split can change. Bitwise’s Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025 names Coinbase Custody as its bitcoin custodian.

Cash custodian, administrator, and prime execution agent

Custody is only one part of the operational chain. Identify each of the following from the prospectus or annual report:

  • the bitcoin custodian, and any alternative custodian the sponsor may use;
  • the cash custodian;
  • the administrator that calculates NAV;
  • any prime execution agent that trades the underlying asset for the fund.

For each role, note whether the provider is affiliated with the sponsor. An affiliated service provider is not automatically a problem, but it is a relationship you should understand before you invest.

What custody disclosure does and does not establish

A disclosure tells you who holds the assets. It does not make custody risk-free. Read the custody and counterparty risk factors in the prospectus, and check whether the filing describes any insurance or loss coverage, what that coverage applies to, and any stated limits. Treat a named custodian as a starting point for further questions, not as a conclusion.

Tracking: NAV, benchmark, and your share price

Know the benchmark and its valuation time

The benchmark is the reference price the fund is meant to follow. The iShares Bitcoin Trust identifies a CF Benchmarks bitcoin reference rate. Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF identifies the Lukka Prime Bitcoin Reference Rate, and its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 says the administrator calculates NAV once each business day and the sponsor publishes it. Check how each benchmark is calculated and at what time it is valued, because a difference in valuation time can make two funds look different even when they hold the same asset.

Compare NAV return with the benchmark over matching periods

Measure the fund’s NAV return and the benchmark return over the same start and end dates. Use total-return measures where the source provides them. Fees and expenses should explain most of the gap between the two. A gap much larger than the disclosed fee and expenses is a question to put to the issuer, not something to explain away.

Premium and discount to NAV

Your result depends on the price you trade at, not only on NAV. When the share price sits above NAV, you are paying a premium. When it sits below, you are buying at a discount. Your return from buying or selling can therefore differ from the fund’s NAV performance over the same period. Compare the closing share price with NAV on the dates you care about, and check the same comparison on the day you actually trade.

Risks and regulatory context

The iShares Bitcoin Trust prospectus, filed with the SEC in July 2025, states: “The Shares are speculative and involve a high degree of risk.” The risk section of each current prospectus should address, at minimum, digital-asset price volatility, disruption to the benchmark or pricing source, custodian and counterparty risk, and interruptions to the creation and redemption process. Read each category as it applies to the product you are considering.

The SEC’s 2025 order on digital-asset trust issued receipts describes earlier bitcoin and ether exchange-traded product approvals and the surveillance rationale used in those proceedings. That context explains how listing review worked. It is not an SEC endorsement of any particular fund, and an exchange listing does not mean a product is suitable for your goals or that your principal is protected.

How to compare two or more candidates

If two or more products meet your exposure goal, compare them on the same date and over the same periods:

  1. Open each current prospectus and record the sponsor fee, any waiver and its end date, and any extraordinary expenses or transaction costs the filing describes.
  2. On the same day, record the bid, the ask, and the displayed size for an order of your planned size, at the time of day you plan to trade.
  3. Calculate the NAV return and the benchmark return over identical periods, using total return where available.
  4. Compare each share’s closing price with its NAV on the same dates to measure premium or discount.
  5. List the bitcoin custodian, cash custodian, administrator, and any prime execution agent, and mark any affiliates.
  6. Read the risk section of each prospectus and note which risks apply specifically to that product.

The table below summarizes what each check tells you and where to find it.

What to compare Where to find it What it tells you
Sponsor fee and waiver end date Current prospectus fee table The recurring cost and whether a lower rate is temporary
Bid-ask spread and depth Broker quote screen or exchange data at your trading time The cost of your own order and how much size is available
NAV return versus benchmark return Issuer data for matching periods, total return where available How closely the fund follows its reference price after expenses
Share price versus NAV Closing prices and published NAV on the same dates Whether you are buying at a premium or a discount
Custodians and service providers Prospectus and annual report (Form 10-K) Who holds the assets and which roles are affiliated

A low fee does not establish tight spreads, close tracking, or stronger custody. Each measure above can point in a different direction, so the comparison has to be made measure by measure rather than by a single ranking.

Ether products

Ether exchange-traded products follow the same steps, but the benchmark, custody arrangements, and risk language are specific to each product. Do not carry over the bitcoin custodian or benchmark names from one product to another. Check each filing separately.

The fee figure in this article comes from a July 2025 prospectus and the custodian and benchmark details come from filings dated 2025 and 2026. Confirm each detail in the current filing before making a decision.

The Bottom Line

Choose the product whose structure, custody chain, and risks you understand, then decide between candidates on the costs you can verify on one date. The sponsor fee is the easiest number to find. The spread you cross and the premium or discount you buy at are the costs you pay on each trade, so measure them before you place an order.
