If cryptocurrency was stolen, there is no universally “best” recovery expert—and no private provider can guarantee your funds will come back. A legitimate blockchain investigator may trace transactions and prepare analysis, but private companies cannot issue seizure orders. First secure any accounts still under your control, preserve evidence, and report through official channels. Treat unsolicited offers, advance fees, requests for wallet secrets, and claims of government connections as serious warning signs.
What to do first after cryptocurrency theft
- Stop engaging with suspicious recovery contacts. Do not share your seed phrase, private key, password, exchange login, identity documents, or banking details. Do not pay a fee or “tax” to release supposedly recovered funds. The FBI warns that recovery schemes seek upfront payments and personal or financial information.
- Secure accounts that may still be yours. If an exchange or other account may be compromised, contact its support using the official website or phone number you find independently—not a link or number in an unexpected message. The FBI gives the same advice when someone claims there is a problem with an account: contact the exchange directly.
- Preserve records. Save transaction IDs or hashes; sending and receiving addresses; the coin or token and amount; transaction dates and times; exchange and bank records; messages, emails, websites, phone numbers, usernames, and payment demands. The FBI specifically identifies transaction addresses, amount and type, date and time, and transaction ID or hash as useful information.
- Report through official channels. In the United States, file a report with IC3 and contact a local FBI field office or local police as appropriate. Type official addresses into your browser or find contact details independently. IC3 says it does not partner with private law firms or crypto services to recover funds, and it will not directly contact people to ask for money.
Reporting does not ensure that assets can be frozen or returned. Transfers may cross jurisdictions, and only appropriate legal processes and case-specific circumstances can lead to seizure or a victim claims process.
What a Bitcoin recovery expert can—and cannot—do
A blockchain analytics or incident-response provider may organize transaction flows, identify addresses or services for further investigation, and prepare a report. That work can support an investigation; it is not authority to take control of funds. The FBI states: “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” Exchanges may freeze accounts through their own internal processes or in response to legal process.
A provider should not need your seed phrase or private key to trace public blockchain transactions. If someone says they need control of your wallet to retrieve funds, stop and verify the claim through the wallet provider or exchange’s official support channel. Never hand over wallet secrets to a recovery service.

How to evaluate a recovery provider
If specialist help is warranted, assess the provider as an investigative service—not as a shortcut to guaranteed recovery. The FBI warns that fraudulent tracing or recovery businesses may find victims through social media, messaging apps, ads, comments, and search results. Some charge upfront, disappear, provide incomplete or inaccurate tracing, or demand additional fees. Others falsely claim law-enforcement or legal affiliations.
- Confirm who they are. Independently verify the company’s legal identity, staff, and relevant professional credentials. Do not rely on a badge, logo, testimonial, or referral supplied by the person who contacted you.
- Get a written scope. Ask what will be analyzed, what information is required, how it will be handled, what report or service you will receive, and what limitations apply.
- Clarify the full cost. Request a written total fee and payment terms. Be wary of staged charges, demands for cryptocurrency, “taxes” to release funds, or any promise that payment guarantees recovery.
- Ask about the role and authority. Find out whether the provider is a private analyst, incident-response firm, lawyer, exchange, or law-enforcement agency. Ask whether an exchange or law-enforcement agency actually requested the work; verify that independently.
- Verify every claimed affiliation yourself. Contact agencies, exchanges, and lawyers using details found independently. IC3 explicitly states that it does not work with non-law-enforcement entities such as law firms or crypto services to recuperate lost funds or investigate cases.
When a lawyer may be relevant
The FBI says victims may choose civil litigation to seek recovery. Consider that route only after checking a lawyer’s identity, current license in the relevant jurisdiction, experience, fees, and potential conflicts independently. A claimed connection to a government agency is not proof of legitimacy: the FBI has warned about fictitious law firms that claim government authorization or say they have information about a victim’s case.

Why recovery offers deserve extra scrutiny
Fictitious law firms may collect personal or banking information, request part of their fees in advance, or invent taxes and other charges before claiming funds can be released. From February 2023 through February 2024, victims further exploited by fictitious law firms reported more than $9.9 million in losses to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. That figure concerns reported losses in those schemes, not the total scale of crypto theft or the likelihood of recovery.

In a separate 2023 advisory, the FBI reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses during 2022. That is a figure for investment-fraud losses—not losses to recovery scams and not a measure of funds that can be recovered.
What real seizure cases can tell you
Official investigations have sometimes resulted in seizures, but a seizure is not a general recovery service or a promise that every victim will be repaid. In one case-specific FBI, Secret Service, and Department of Justice process involving approximately $225 million in seized cryptocurrency, potential victims could check whether their sending address was among those connected to the case. An address match could lead to instructions for a formal petition supported by records such as exchange statements, proof of wallet ownership, and bank statements. That process applies to that investigation; use only the official case information and instructions.

How to choose the next step
- If the contact was unsolicited: Do not reply with sensitive information or send money. Preserve the message and report the incident through official channels.
- If an exchange account may be compromised: Reach the exchange through its independently located official support channel and follow its account-security process.
- If you need transaction analysis: Compare providers using verified identity, a defined written scope, secure evidence handling, transparent fees, and realistic limitations. Do not give anyone wallet secrets.
- If you are considering litigation: Consult independently verified, licensed counsel in the relevant jurisdiction and discuss costs and uncertainty before proceeding.
Official U.S. reporting guidance is not a substitute for local procedures elsewhere. Outside the United States, use the relevant national law-enforcement and financial-crime reporting channels, reached independently.
