Start by checking what the fund actually holds: spot bitcoin or ether, futures contracts, or a mix. Then compare its full costs, custody arrangements, benchmark, and performance against that benchmark. The word “ETF” is often used broadly, but some U.S. spot crypto products are trusts or exchange-traded products (ETPs), not registered investment-company ETFs. SEC listing approval is not an endorsement of an investment or a guarantee against loss.
First identify the fund’s exposure
A fund’s name does not tell you how it gets cryptocurrency exposure. Read its prospectus or summary prospectus and find the investment objective, principal strategies, and holdings disclosures.

Spot holdings
A spot product holds the underlying bitcoin or ether with a custodian. Its value is tied to the asset, less fund liabilities and costs, but the shares can still trade above or below the product’s net asset value (NAV).

Futures exposure
A futures fund gets exposure through contracts rather than directly holding the cryptocurrency. It may need to replace expiring contracts with later-dated ones, a process called rolling. Contract pricing and roll timing can cause performance to differ from spot prices.
#1 Best Overall
Combined exposure
A product offering both Bitcoin and Ether exposure may use futures, spot holdings, or another strategy. For example, the September 26, 2025 ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Equal Weight ETF summary prospectus says the fund seeks equal-weight exposure primarily through futures and “does not invest directly in bitcoin or ether.” It describes monthly futures replacement and monthly re-establishment of equal weights. Those terms describe that fund, not crypto funds generally. Read the ProShares summary prospectus.
Compare fees and the costs beyond the expense ratio
Use the prospectus fee table to distinguish gross annual operating expenses from net expenses after any waiver or reimbursement. Check the amount and end date of a waiver; a net figure may rise if it expires or is not renewed. Also look for trading, financing, brokerage, and bid-ask spread costs, which may not be included in the stated expense ratio.
Rank #2
As a dated, fund-specific example, ProShares disclosed 0.08% in other expenses and 1.03% in total annual operating expenses before waiver for its Bitcoin & Ether Equal Weight ETF in its September 26, 2025 summary prospectus. After the described waiver, the net annual operating expense ratio was 0.95%; the stated waiver terms ran through September 30, 2026. The filing identifies interest expense and futures commission merchant fees among other expenses and says transaction and financing costs are not reflected in the expense table. These are not current industry averages or a quote for another fund. See the filing’s fee table and waiver terms.

Check custody and operational disclosures
For a spot product, the custodian safeguards the fund’s crypto assets. Review the prospectus for the custodian, control of private keys, asset segregation, subcontractors, insurance limits, and procedures for disruptions or loss events. An insurance provision is not automatically a guarantee that every loss will be reimbursed; read what it covers and its limits.
Rank #3
Service providers are fund-specific. Grayscale’s BTC product disclosure names Coinbase Custody and the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index (XBX). Separately, Bitwise’s annual report for the year ended December 31, 2025 identifies Coinbase Custody Trust Company as bitcoin custodian and BNY Mellon as cash custodian, administrator, and transfer agent. These examples are not universal arrangements or rankings of provider safety. Review Grayscale’s BTC product disclosure and Bitwise’s 2025 annual report.
Understand what the fund is tracking
Find the exact index or reference rate, how it is calculated, and when its prices are taken. Two products that both aim to reflect bitcoin or ether may use different benchmarks or pricing methods. For a spot product, holdings and liabilities feed into NAV; for a futures strategy, contract prices, rolls, and any rebalancing also affect results.
Rank #4
Compare NAV total returns with the named benchmark over identical periods. Then separately compare exchange-market-price returns with NAV. Market shares may trade at a premium or discount to NAV, while spreads and commissions can further affect what an investor receives. Grayscale’s disclosure notes that ETP shares trade at market price, may be above or below NAV, and that brokerage commissions reduce returns. See the product disclosure.
Assess trading and whether the exposure fits
Before trading, check current exchange information for volume, bid-ask spreads, and premium or discount history. Review how creations and redemptions work if the documents explain them. These details can affect execution even when a fund’s stated expense ratio looks low. A single day’s volume or spread is not a complete measure of liquidity.
Best Value
Then consider whether you want Bitcoin, Ether, or a combined allocation and whether you can tolerate the potential loss from a volatile, concentrated crypto exposure. A combined fund can still have a narrow mandate; its name does not imply broad diversification.
A practical comparison checklist
- Open the latest prospectus. Confirm the fund’s legal structure, spot or futures exposure, holdings, target weights, and rebalancing approach.
- Record full disclosed costs. Note gross and net expenses, waiver terms and end date, and any disclosed trading or financing costs.
- Identify the benchmark and custody setup. Write down the reference index, pricing methodology, named custodian, and relevant operational safeguards and limits.
- Compare like with like. Match periods when comparing NAV returns with benchmark returns; review market-price premiums or discounts separately.
- Check current trading conditions and documents. Verify the latest fee schedule, official fact sheet, benchmark methodology, exchange data, and listing status before making a comparison.
Fees, waivers, providers, benchmarks, and trading conditions can change. The named filings above are dated examples, not a comprehensive comparison or ranking of U.S. products. None establishes that a particular fund is suitable for an individual investor.
