Use the official SASSA Services Portal for ordinary social grants and SASSA’s SRD website for Social Relief of Distress status checks. Read the message for the relevant month, then check the payment date or pay-day field before travelling to collect money. An SRD approval without a pay-day value does not mean payment has been processed.
Choose the official status-check service
For an ordinary social grant, start at the SASSA Services Portal. Sign in or register to see applications associated with your account. The portal displays active application statuses in a table and may also send status-change notifications. Registration requires a cell phone for verification and an email address for notifications; an OTP is sent to the phone number you provide.

For the SRD grant, use the official SRD website and its status-check route. Do not enter your identity or banking details on unofficial status-check pages. Never share an OTP, PIN or banking credentials with someone who claims they can speed up a payment.

SASSA’s SRD status guide explains the monthly messages and the action associated with each:

- Application complete: Your reapplication is complete. SASSA verifies it each month, so check again for that month’s result.
- Bank details pending: SASSA has received an application or reapplication but does not have bank details or a payment preference. Submit the requested details through the official SRD website.
- Reapplication pending: SASSA has not received a reapplication. Submit one through the official SRD website if one is required for your case.
- Period pending: SASSA received the reapplication, but verification for that month is not finished. Check again later in the month.
- Period approved: You are approved for that month. Check the pay-day field: if no pay day appears, SASSA says the payment has not yet been processed.
- Period declined: The status page gives a reason. If you believe the decision is invalid, request reconsideration through the official Department of Social Development route linked there.
- Canceled: The grant has been canceled. Follow the reinstatement route linked in SASSA’s guide if you believe it should be reinstated.
Find the payment date for your grant
Ordinary social grants
Ordinary grant dates depend on the grant category and the month. The Department of Social Development’s 2026/27 payment schedule lists these dates for October 2026:

The department says payments are staggered over three days to improve efficiency and reduce congestion. Check the published schedule for the relevant month and category rather than assuming these October dates apply at another time.

SRD grant
Use the pay-day information in your own SRD status. SASSA says a displayed pay-day value indicates when you will receive money; if the field is blank, payment has not been processed yet.

- Cash at a designated pay point on a particular day.
- Electronic deposit into a bank or Postbank account. A bank may charge a service fee.
- Payment through an institution that administers the grant.
You do not need a bank account to qualify for a grant, according to SASSA’s FAQ. SASSA encourages beneficiaries to have an account as a payment option, but weigh any fees and whether you can safely access the account. If you cannot collect the grant personally, South African Government guidance says you may appoint a procurator at a SASSA office or give someone power of attorney. Confirm the arrangement with SASSA for your grant and circumstances.
If you are submitting details for a bank account opened less than three months ago, SASSA’s FAQ identifies a bank letter confirming the account number as an alternative to three months of bank statements. Follow the instructions shown in the official portal when submitting or changing payment details.

Check whether a card transition affects you
A South African Government notice dated 23 July 2026 said affected SASSA Gold Card holders needed to migrate to Postbank Black Cards by 31 August 2026 and named selected retailers for collection. Because that deadline has passed, do not assume an old card remains usable: confirm your own card and payment situation directly with Postbank or SASSA.

- Check the correct official service: the SASSA Services Portal for an ordinary grant or the SRD website for an SRD application.
- Confirm the grant type and month, read the current status, and check your payment preference and any pay-day shown.
- For an ordinary grant, compare the expected date with the published schedule for that month and category.
- If the portal says information is missing, submit or update it through the route the portal requests. Keep application references and official SMS notices.
- For a declined SRD month, read the stated reason and use the linked official reconsideration route if you dispute it. For a canceled SRD grant, consult the reinstatement route in SASSA’s guide.
- For help with an application or payment, call SASSA’s published toll-free number, 0800 60 10 11. Its FAQ also lists this number for payout-date information, district-office contacts, and fraud or corruption reporting.
Collect cash safely
SASSA’s FAQ advises beneficiaries to watch for people loitering near ATMs, secure their card and cash before leaving, and check their balance. If you spot a discrepancy, report it to your bank. Do not let a stranger persuade you to return to an ATM transaction; SASSA warns that doing so can expose your card to skimming.
