How to Check Your Green Card Case Status and Understand USCIS Processing Updates

Use your USCIS receipt number to check a green card case, interpret processing-time estimates and inquiry dates, and take the right steps if a notice or card is missing.

To check a green card case, use USCIS Case Status Online or your USCIS online account and enter the 13-character receipt number from your notice. For timing, select the processing-time option that matches your form, category, office and receipt date. USCIS’s published processing time is a historical measure—not a promised decision date—and the separate inquiry date is about when you may ask USCIS about a delay, not when your case will be decided.

The safest approach is to treat status, processing estimates, inquiry eligibility and mail delivery as four related but separate questions. Checking the right USCIS tool for each question helps you avoid confusing a historical estimate with a deadline or assuming that a mailed document was delivered.

How do I check my green card case status?

Start with USCIS, using the receipt number on the notice for the application or petition you want to track. USCIS provides two routes: Case Status Online for a status check, and a USCIS online account that can show status and case history. The account also offers features such as automatic alerts, processing-time information, evidence uploads, address updates and secure messages. Which features apply can depend on the case and the account.

Use Case Status Online

  1. Find the receipt number. Look on the USCIS receipt notice for the case you are checking. The number has 13 characters: three letters followed by ten numbers.
  2. Enter the number without dashes. Do not add spaces or punctuation. Check that you have not confused a letter with a number, or copied the receipt number from a different case.
  3. Read the status and its date carefully. A status update tells you what USCIS has recorded for the case. If it says a notice or card was issued or mailed, treat that as a mail-delivery question as well as a case-status update.

Use an online account when you need more than a status check

An account can be useful if you want to see the case history, receive automatic alerts or use account features such as uploading evidence, updating an address or sending a secure message. It does not turn a published processing estimate into a personal forecast. Keep using the receipt notice and the matching case information when checking a particular filing.

Review alerts promptly, but do not assume an electronic alert replaces a formal USCIS notice. Compare the account entry with the case-status page and retain every notice you receive. If several relatives have pending filings, verify the receipt number attached to each alert before taking action.

Where can I find my receipt number?

Use the receipt number printed on the USCIS notice for the case. It is a three-letter prefix followed by ten numbers, for 13 characters total. Enter it without dashes in Case Status Online.

If you have multiple immigration filings, each may have its own receipt number and status. Make sure the notice belongs to the form or petition whose status you need; one family member’s or filing’s number cannot be used to look up another case. If you cannot locate the notice, check any USCIS online account associated with the filing for its status or history. If you still cannot identify the number or case, use USCIS’s official help and inquiry options rather than guessing at a number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before contacting USCIS, compare the receipt number with the form, applicant or beneficiary name and receipt date shown on your records. A single mistyped character can return no result or lead you to believe that a different case is yours. Never add a dash because the notice displays the number in grouped characters; the online field requires the characters without dashes.

How do I choose the right USCIS processing-time estimate?

USCIS’s processing-time tool is useful only when you compare the right case with the right row. Use the information on the receipt notice and in the current tool, rather than choosing a row based on a general impression of how long green cards take.

  1. Identify the form type. Choose the form corresponding to the filing you are tracking. A green card process may involve different forms or filings, and their processing information is not interchangeable.
  2. Match the category. Select the applicable category offered for that form. Do not assume every case filed under a broad immigration goal belongs in the same category.
  3. Check the office or office category. Compare the office information on the receipt notice with the choices shown by USCIS’s current tool. USCIS has listed some service-center cases under “Service Center Operations (SCOPS)” because casework may be handled at multiple locations. The office label is not a fixed prediction of where work will occur.
  4. Use the receipt date. The date USCIS received the filing matters to the separate inquiry-date calculation. Use the date shown for the case, not the date you mailed it or a later status-update date.
  5. Read the result as a historical reference. Note which estimate the tool gives for the selected form, category and office, then consider it alongside the case’s actual status and receipt date.

If the current tool offers a different office category than the wording on an older notice, do not force the case into a row solely because the old notice names a particular service center. Follow the available choices for the matching form and category in the live USCIS tool. Office labels and processing information can change.

How to compare two processing-time results

When a saved estimate differs from today’s result, compare the underlying inputs before concluding that a case moved backward. Check whether the form, category, office option or receipt date changed. USCIS updates processing information monthly, and it may reorganize office choices, including use of SCOPS for work performed across locations. A different row can therefore produce a different historical estimate without any change to the underlying filing.

Compare elapsed time with the receipt date, not with the date of a later biometrics notice, evidence request or online update. Also distinguish the estimate for completed cases from the separate date on which the inquiry tool may allow a question. They are not interchangeable measures.

What does USCIS’s processing time mean?

USCIS says the processing time displayed on its website is the time it took the agency to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the previous six months. The measure describes completed cases in that period; it is not a deadline for an individual application, nor a promise that a particular case will be decided within that span. USCIS describes the figure as a general reference for how long it has taken to complete most cases. Its processing-time information is updated monthly.

That distinction matters when deciding what to do next. A case that has not reached the displayed time is not necessarily stuck simply because another applicant received a decision sooner. Conversely, reaching or passing the displayed figure does not by itself establish what happened to your case or guarantee that USCIS will decide it immediately. The number summarizes a group of past adjudications, not the remaining time for your individual file.

The estimate also does not explain why a specific case is pending. It cannot tell you, by itself, whether USCIS needs additional evidence, whether a notice was delivered, or when an officer will make a decision. Use the case status and any USCIS notices for case-specific updates; use the processing-time figure for context.

USCIS’s official “More Information About Case Processing Times” guidance, accessed October 10, 2026, describes the 80% figure as the time taken to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the last six months and calls the page a general reference. Because the agency updates the information monthly, any number copied from an earlier visit can become outdated.

When can I submit a service request?

USCIS has a separate inquiry-date calculation. It uses the time to complete 93% of adjudicated cases and subtracts the time already elapsed since the receipt date. In the online tool, the result may be an estimated date to ask about the case or a link to submit a question. This is different from the displayed processing time, which is based on the 80% measure.

An inquiry date is not an approval date, a scheduled decision date or a promise of action by that date. It indicates when USCIS’s tool may allow a case inquiry under its current calculation. Because processing information can change, check the tool again rather than relying on a date saved or quoted earlier. The tool’s current result for the correct form, category, office and receipt date is the relevant one.

If your form type is not listed

USCIS’s processing FAQ gives more than six months pending as the default period before an inquiry for a form type that is not listed. That default is an inquiry threshold, not a promise that USCIS will decide the case within six months. Follow the current USCIS instructions for the case rather than treating the six-month point as a guaranteed completion date.

Before sending an inquiry

  • Confirm that you selected the correct form type and category.
  • Recheck the office category available in the current tool; do not rely only on an older service-center label.
  • Use the receipt date from the notice and make sure the inquiry calculation is for the case you are tracking.
  • Follow the result or link shown by USCIS. If the tool says an inquiry is not yet available, a historical processing estimate alone does not override that result.
  • Have the receipt notice and your latest status entry available so your question identifies the correct filing.

USCIS’s 93% calculation answers the question “When may I ask about a case?” It does not answer “When will USCIS decide it?” Keeping those questions separate prevents an inquiry date from becoming an assumed deadline.

What if I think my case is taking too long?

First separate three questions: whether USCIS has recorded a new status, whether the case is outside the time at which the tool permits an inquiry, and whether a mailed notice or card has gone missing. Those situations have different next steps. A long wait by itself does not reveal the reason for delay, and the general processing-time figure cannot diagnose an individual case.

  1. Check the latest status. Use Case Status Online or your online account. Look for a recorded update and note whether USCIS says it issued or mailed something.
  2. Check the matching processing row. Verify the form, category and office choice against the receipt notice and the current tool.
  3. Check the inquiry result separately. Use the inquiry-date calculation for the case’s receipt date. If USCIS offers a date or a submission link, follow the current tool’s directions.
  4. Handle mail separately. If the status shows a notice or card was issued or mailed, follow the missing-notice or undelivered-card steps below instead of treating the record as if no update occurred.

Keep a simple record of the date you checked, the exact status wording and any inquiry date displayed. This helps you notice a new update and avoid relying on a stale estimate. Do not repeatedly submit inquiries merely because the 80% figure changed; use the current eligibility result shown by USCIS.

USCIS’s status, processing-time, account and case-inquiry services are process tools. They do not provide individualized legal advice. If your question is about how immigration law applies to your circumstances, use an authorized immigration legal service provider.

What if I did not receive a notice or card?

The correct next step depends on what USCIS says was sent. A missing notice and an undelivered card are not the same problem, so start by checking the case status and follow the route that matches the document.

A notice may have been issued

USCIS advises checking Case Status Online first when you believe a notice was issued but did not arrive. Confirm whether the status shows that USCIS issued the notice, then use the relevant USCIS help or inquiry route for a missing notice. Do not assume that a lack of mail means the case has no update.

Check that the mailing address on file is current and that household members have not received the document elsewhere. Keep the case number, the status date and the type of notice together when using USCIS help. If an online account shows an electronic history entry, that entry confirms a recorded action but does not by itself prove physical delivery.

A card is marked as mailed

If USCIS says a card was mailed, check the case status for a USPS tracking number and use that number when available to follow delivery. USCIS also provides an e-Request path for certain undelivered cards. Use that route when the card fits the eligibility described in USCIS’s current e-Request instructions; it is not a general substitute for checking the mailing status first.

A “mailed” update and a “delivered” event are different. Review USPS tracking for forwarding, attempted delivery or return information, then follow USCIS’s current undelivered-card instructions. Avoid filing a duplicate application simply because the physical card has not arrived; first determine whether USCIS treats it as a delivery issue.

Keep contact details and delivery information in view

USCIS online accounts include an address-update feature. If you need to update an address, use USCIS’s official process and check whether it applies to each pending filing; do not assume that changing one record automatically updates every case. For a card, the USCIS status and any USPS tracking information help distinguish a case-processing issue from a delivery issue.

How to interpret common USCIS updates without overreading them

Information you see What it tells you What it does not tell you
Case status or case history USCIS has recorded a status or history entry for the receipt number you checked. It does not necessarily provide a decision date. If it reports that a notice or card was issued or mailed, follow the relevant mail steps.
Processing-time estimate The time USCIS took to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the previous six months for the selected processing information. It is not an individual forecast or guarantee of when your case will be completed.
Inquiry date or submission option USCIS’s separate 93% calculation may indicate when the tool will allow you to ask about the case. It is not an expected approval or decision date.
Office label on a receipt The receipt identifies an office or service center associated with the case. It does not necessarily predict where casework will be handled. USCIS may present “Service Center Operations (SCOPS)” for work handled across locations.
Card marked mailed USCIS has recorded a mailing update; a USPS tracking number may be available. It does not establish that the card was delivered. Check tracking and USCIS’s undelivered-card e-Request guidance when applicable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the wrong receipt number: family members and related filings normally have separate numbers.
  • Entering punctuation: the 13-character number should be entered without dashes.
  • Choosing a row from an old office label: use the office and category choices currently offered by USCIS, including SCOPS when shown.
  • Treating 80% as a deadline: it summarizes completed cases, not your remaining wait.
  • Treating 93% as a decision forecast: it identifies possible inquiry eligibility, not approval timing.
  • Ignoring a mail status: an issued notice or mailed card requires the appropriate delivery steps.
  • Assuming one address update covers every filing: check the official process for each pending case.
  • Seeking legal conclusions from a status page: use an authorized provider for advice about your facts and options.

Practical checks before you act

  • Use the correct case number: three letters followed by ten numbers, entered without dashes.
  • Match the case details: form, category, office option and receipt date all matter when choosing a processing row or inquiry calculation.
  • Do not convert a percentile into a personal deadline: the 80% processing figure and 93% inquiry calculation answer different questions.
  • Recheck current information: USCIS says processing-time data are updated monthly, and current tool options can differ from older notices or saved estimates.
  • Follow the status that appears: a missing notice, a card marked mailed and a pending case require different USCIS routes.
  • Separate tracking from legal advice: use USCIS for process information and an authorized provider for legal guidance about your circumstances.

A quick decision path

  1. No recent status change? Confirm the receipt number, then compare the case with the current form, category and office row.
  2. Past the inquiry date? Use the USCIS inquiry link or instructions shown for that case.
  3. Notice issued but absent? Follow USCIS’s missing-notice guidance after checking Case Status Online.
  4. Card mailed but absent? Check USPS tracking and the USCIS e-Request route for eligible undelivered cards.
  5. Question involves legal strategy? Stop relying on routine tracking tools and consult an authorized immigration legal service provider.

When can I submit a service request?

Use the current USCIS inquiry tool. It uses a separate calculation based on completing 93% of adjudicated cases and may show an inquiry date or a submission link.

What if my form is not listed in the processing tool?

USCIS’s FAQ uses more than six months pending as the default period before an inquiry for an unlisted form type. That threshold is not a guarantee of a decision within six months.

What if I did not receive my notice?

First check Case Status Online to see whether USCIS recorded that the notice was issued. Then follow USCIS’s official missing-notice help or inquiry route.

What if my card is marked mailed but never arrived?

Check the USCIS status for a USPS tracking number and follow delivery. USCIS also has an e-Request route for certain undelivered cards.

Does the processing-time estimate predict my decision date?

No. USCIS defines it as the time taken to complete 80% of adjudicated cases during the previous six months. It is a reference point, not an individual forecast.

Does an inquiry date mean my case will be decided then?

No. It indicates when USCIS’s tool may permit a question about a delay. It is not an approval date or scheduled decision date.

The Bottom Line

Check the case with the correct USCIS receipt number, match the form, category, office and receipt date in the current processing tool, and keep the 80% estimate separate from the 93% inquiry calculation. If USCIS records a notice or card as issued or mailed, follow the appropriate missing-mail steps. Recheck USCIS’s live tools because processing figures and office options change, and use an authorized immigration service provider for individualized legal advice.
