Choose the right way to check your EPF account
The method depends on what you need to confirm. The passbook is the most useful route for reviewing account entries. EPFO’s phone options are listed for balance enquiry, while UMANG is another official channel for member services. A quick balance response alone may not show the month-by-month information you need.

EPFO’s portal says erstwhile EPF mobile services are being discontinued. Use current instructions on EPFO or UMANG rather than relying on an old EPF app or saved directions for it.
What you need before checking
Have your UAN and password ready for the passbook. You also need the captcha displayed on the login page. For SMS and missed-call enquiries, use the mobile number registered with that UAN; sending a request from another number may not work. Keep your own credentials private, even if another person offers to check the account for you.

Use a current web browser and type the official EPFO address yourself or reach it through an EPFO page. A search result, text message or social-media link can lead to an imitation site. The passbook page identifies itself as “EPF Passbook & Claim Status,” which helps you distinguish the official login screen from an unofficial balance calculator.
Check your balance and passbook online

Open the official EPFO Member Passbook portal. Confirm that the address is the EPFO domain before entering anything.

Enter your UAN and password, complete the captcha and sign in. Use your own account credentials; do not share them with someone offering to check the balance for you.

Open the passbook for the relevant member account and review the displayed entries. Use the passbook rather than a brief balance enquiry when you need to examine contribution history or interest postings.

If you need to check a specific month, look for the relevant contribution entry in the passbook. Compare the period shown with your employment or payroll records.

Save or print the information only on a device you control. Sign out when finished, especially if you used a shared computer.
The portal’s public landing page is a login screen, not a view into any member’s account. Your own signed-in passbook is needed to confirm what has been recorded for you.
How to read the passbook for a month-by-month check
Start with the period you want to verify and read the entries actually displayed for that account. The purpose of the passbook is to provide an account record, so it is more informative than a one-line balance response. Check several consecutive periods if you are investigating a gap rather than looking at only the latest line.
Keep the date of your check in mind. A contribution that was recently remitted may still be moving through processing, and the retrieved EPFO information does not establish a universal posting time for every employer. A blank or delayed-looking recent period is therefore a prompt to check again, not proof that money was withheld or lost.
If you have more than one member account associated with your employment history, make sure you are viewing the account relevant to the period under review. If the entry remains absent after allowing reasonable processing time, compare your payroll information with the passbook and ask the employer for the remittance details. EPFO’s general landing page cannot determine whether a particular employer paid a particular month; account-specific assistance must come through your account and official EPFO channels.

Follow the current portal instructions if you need to select a language or troubleshoot a response. The language code is represented by
LAN; do not guess a code from an old message or third-party website. -
Treat the reply as a balance enquiry. For a detailed history, return to the signed-in passbook.
EPFO’s 12 March 2018 announcement described an SMS request for the latest contribution and balance from an activated UAN and a registered mobile number. That historical announcement also described language options and other conditions. Current instructions on the passbook page take priority, because service details can change.

Wait for the balance-enquiry response and use the passbook if you need transaction-level detail or want to inspect interest entries.
Older EPFO announcements gave different phone instructions, including the missed-call number 011-22901406 in a 12 March 2018 release. Do not copy that historical number as current guidance. The number shown on the current Member Passbook landing page is the one to use, and you should recheck that page if the service does not respond.
Find contribution entries and check whether a deposit appears
To check contributions, sign in to the passbook and inspect the account entries for the periods you want to verify. This gives you a record to compare with the contribution information available to you, rather than relying only on a short balance enquiry.

Compare the period with your payslip, payroll statement or other employer-provided contribution information.

If a recent contribution is absent, allow for processing timing and check again before drawing a conclusion. The available EPFO information does not establish how quickly a particular employer’s remittance will appear in an individual account.

Do not treat one missing recent entry as conclusive proof of a missed deposit. The account record, the timing of processing and confirmation from the employer or EPFO all matter. A general balance message cannot tell you whether a particular month was remitted, rejected, corrected or is still being processed.

Inspect the relevant entries in your signed-in passbook to see whether interest appears in your account. The public login page cannot show a member’s interest credit, and a balance enquiry does not establish the details of individual postings.
Interest may not appear as a separate, immediately visible line at the moment you expect. Do not infer a missing credit solely from a public webpage or from a rate quoted in an old article. Your own passbook is the appropriate place to look for the posting associated with your account.
No current annual EPF interest rate or posting date is established by the cited portal information. If you need the rate for a particular financial year, check a year-specific official EPFO notice rather than assuming that a rate from another year still applies. For your own account, rely on the entries shown in your passbook and retain the financial-year context when comparing figures.
Use UMANG through current official directions
EPFO materials, including its Employees Information Booklet published approximately in 2023 and its employee-services listings, describe UMANG as a route to member services, including passbook access. UMANG can be useful when you prefer an official mobile channel, but the materials do not establish a current screen-by-screen route here.

If a menu has moved, search within the current official app or start from an EPFO service page. If you need the most direct route documented by EPFO’s current passbook landing page, use the Member Passbook portal.
EPFO’s portal also says erstwhile EPF mobile services are being discontinued. Avoid installing an old “EPF” application from an unverified source or entering your UAN into an app that is not reached through current EPFO directions.
Troubleshoot a failed login or missing response
The passbook will not open
Recheck the official web address, UAN, password and captcha. Captchas are case-sensitive in some systems, so enter the characters exactly as shown. If the page is temporarily unavailable, try again later through the same official address rather than switching to a third-party balance site.
The SMS or missed call does not return a balance
Confirm that the request came from the mobile number registered with your UAN and that the SMS format matches the current portal instruction. Do not add extra words or substitute a historical phone number. If the response still fails, use the signed-in passbook or current EPFO help and service directions.
A recent month is not visible
Check the date of the last entry and allow for remittance and processing time. Compare again later, then ask the employer to confirm the relevant remittance if the entry remains absent. Neither a public login page nor a brief phone response can establish the status of a specific employer payment.
You cannot remember the password
Use only the recovery or assistance route presented by the official EPFO service. Never give a caller your password, OTP or bank information while seeking help.

Protect your account and personal information
EPFO warns members not to disclose sensitive information or make payments in response to calls. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, states on its passbook portal: “Please never respond to any call for sharing any personal details like Aadhaar, PAN, Bank details, OTP or request for any payment.”

Do not make a payment because someone claims it is needed to release, update or verify your EPF balance.

Enter your UAN and password only on the official EPFO portal or in an official service channel reached through current EPFO instructions.

Be suspicious of promises that an agent can instantly add a missing contribution or unlock interest for a fee.

If you receive a suspicious call, end it and navigate to EPFO independently rather than using the caller’s link or callback number.

What each method can and cannot confirm
The portal and passbook provide signed-in access to your account entries. That makes them the right choice for checking a particular period, comparing contribution history and looking for interest postings. SMS and missed call are designed for a quick balance enquiry and depend on the registered mobile number. They are convenient when you need a current snapshot but do not replace the passbook.
UMANG is an official service channel described by EPFO, but its exact current navigation can change. Treat it as another route to member services, not as permission to use an unofficial clone. None of these public descriptions can reveal another person’s account, establish a universal posting schedule or supply a current interest rate without a year-specific official notice.
Questions to ask when the numbers do not match
If a payslip, SMS response and passbook appear different, first identify what each figure represents and the date on which it was generated. A brief phone response may reflect a balance enquiry, while the passbook records entries that require account access. A recent payroll deduction may also precede the appearance of an entry in the account. Keep the relevant records, check the passbook again and seek confirmation from the employer or EPFO when the discrepancy persists.
Do not use a calculator, printed guide or commercial tracking product as proof that EPFO received a contribution. Such tools can help you organize your own notes, but only the official account record and official assistance can confirm what has been recorded.
