To check money already added to Steam, sign in and look for your Steam Wallet balance in the upper-right corner beside your profile name. To check an unredeemed card, Steam’s documented method is to redeem its code to an account; Steam does not describe a separate anonymous balance check for an unused card.
Check the Steam Wallet balance on your account
- Sign in to the Steam account where you expect the funds to be.
- Look in the upper-right corner beside your profile name for the Steam Wallet balance. This is the balance on that account, not a readout of the value remaining on a separate, unredeemed card. Steam’s gift card and Wallet code help page explains where to see the balance.
Check an unredeemed card by redeeming its code
Steam’s public instructions do not offer a way to query an unused card’s remaining value without redeeming it. If you want to add the card’s value to your account, use Steam’s Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page, enter the unique code, and continue. A successful redemption adds the value to the signed-in account’s Wallet.

Find out whether a card was redeemed before
Check the purchase history on the account that may have received the funds. Steam identifies purchase history as the place to review prior transactions in its purchase FAQ. If you do not see the relevant activity, confirm you are signed into the account that originally received the redemption; a Wallet balance belongs to an account, not to the physical card.
If the code does not work
- Check similar-looking characters. Steam recommends trying alternatives for 0 and O, 1 and I, B and 8, and G and 6.
- Allow for retailer activation. A retailer may take several hours after purchase to complete activation. If the code still fails after several hours, contact Steam Support with a clear photo or scan of the whole back of the Wallet card and the matching retail receipt.
- Receipt-printed codes are different. Steam says it cannot help with codes printed directly on receipts; contact the retailer instead. If you doubt the card is legitimate, Steam advises asking the retailer.
- For a damaged or unreadable code, Steam Support requests a clear, unedited image or scan of the entire back of the card. See Steam’s guidance for damaged or unreadable Wallet codes.
Protect the card code
Do not give the code to someone who contacts you and demands payment in Steam gift cards. Steam says Wallet cards can only be redeemed on Steam and that demands for payment in them are most likely a scam. If you have been targeted, keep the cards and receipt; do not disclose the code to an unknown person. Read Steam’s Wallet code guidance for support information.

What to know about physical Steam gift cards
Steam says it is ending its retail physical-card program: stores will not be restocked as inventory runs out, and Steam expects retail locations to be out of stock by the end of 2026. Existing cards remain redeemable on Steam, subject to local laws, and digital Steam Gift Cards continue to be offered. Availability of physical cards will vary by retailer and location.
