To check whether a phone will work on a carrier, identify the exact phone model and regional variant, compare its LTE and 5G NR bands with that carrier’s current bands, then check VoLTE, unlock status and the carrier’s official IMEI compatibility tool. Matching bands is necessary, but it does not guarantee that calls, all features or service in a particular location will work.
What you need to verify
Phone compatibility is a combination of radio support and carrier eligibility. A device may support some of a network’s bands yet lack another band useful in your area, fail the carrier’s acceptance check, or be unable to make voice calls over LTE.
- Exact model and regional variant: phones sold under the same family name can have different radios.
- LTE band overlap: compare the phone’s LTE bands with the carrier’s LTE bands.
- 5G NR band overlap: compare 5G NR bands separately from LTE. A band number in one generation does not establish support for the other.
- VoLTE and carrier features: check that the exact model can use the carrier’s voice service and that the feature is enabled.
- Eligibility: confirm the device is unlocked, is not blocked, and passes the carrier’s compatibility checker.
- Local coverage and plan: band support does not prove that a particular band is deployed where you will use the phone or included with your plan.
Check compatibility in this order
- Identify the carrier and country. Record the exact provider, country and, where relevant, the area where you need service. An MVNO or sub-brand may use a host network but still have its own device-check process.
- Find the phone’s model number and region. Look in the phone’s Settings/About screen, on its original packaging, or in the manufacturer’s official specifications. Do not rely on the family name alone.
- Read the phone’s published bands. Find the LTE/FDD-LTE and TD-LTE entries and the 5G NR entries for your precise variant. Keep the two generations separate. Apple’s iPhone 14 technical specifications, for example, lists LTE and 5G NR bands separately, identifies model numbers, and notes that 5G, LTE and VoLTE availability varies by market and carrier.
- Get the carrier’s current band information. Use the carrier’s official network or bring-your-own-device page. Compare exact band identifiers rather than assuming that matching frequency names mean the same thing.
- Verify voice service and required features. Confirm VoLTE support for the exact phone and carrier and make sure 4G calling/VoLTE or the relevant calling feature is enabled. Carrier support, market and plan can affect feature availability.
- Run the official IMEI checker. Submit the IMEI only through the carrier’s own checker or a trusted support channel. Bell says you can find the 15-digit IMEI by dialing *#06# or checking the phone’s settings, and offers an IMEI compatibility checker.
- Check lock and block status. Confirm the phone is unlocked and has not been reported lost or stolen. Rogers also points users to APN settings when certain network features do not work as expected.
- Test after activation. With Wi-Fi off and mobile data active, check for a cellular connection, load a page, and place a call. A 4G or 5G icon is a basic indication, not proof that every feature or location will work.
How to compare bands without overreading the result
Make separate lists for LTE and 5G NR, then mark which carrier bands appear in the specification for your exact phone variant. This shows overlap; it does not tell you how much coverage you will get. A carrier’s networks use different bands in different markets, so a global band list cannot establish reception at a particular address.
For example, Rogers’ Canadian bring-your-own-device guidance lists LTE B12, B5, B2/B25, B4/B66 and B7, and 5G N71 (DSS), N66 (DSS), N41 and N78. Those are Rogers-specific examples, not a universal checklist for other carriers or countries. Rogers also says a device needs to use LTE and make calls over LTE (VoLTE) as it retires 3G.

When interpreting 5G specifications, distinguish sub-6 GHz bands from mmWave where the phone and carrier list them separately. The Apple iPhone 14 specification, for instance, includes numerous 5G NR bands and identifies mmWave bands separately; it is an example of how to read one model’s specification, not a substitute for checking your own phone’s variant.
Why the carrier checker still matters
A band match cannot confirm that the carrier will provision the phone or support voice and other network features on it. Bell’s Canadian bring-your-own-device guidance says devices need Bell LTE/5G band support and VoLTE, must be unlocked, and must not be reported lost or stolen. Bell also cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for devices bought internationally or from another carrier. Use the checker for the actual IMEI rather than treating an unlocked label or a matching band list as approval.

If a phone connects but a feature is missing, consult the provider’s configuration guidance, including APN settings where relevant. If the checker rejects an international or carrier-branded variant, ask the provider about that exact model and IMEI before relying on it.

After the carrier accepts and provisions the phone, check data and calling with Wi-Fi disabled. The UK government’s consumer guidance on 4G calling advises users to look for 4G or 5G while mobile data is active, ensure 4G calling/VoLTE or 5G calling is switched on, and contact the provider if unsure. The page, last updated 29 July 2026, says UK operators will switch off 2G between 2029 and 2033; that schedule applies to the UK, not other countries.
