To check your pay, match the wage period to the government minimum-wage notification effective for those dates, then compare its rate for your employment, worker category and area with your wage slip and attendance or payroll record. Where the notification lists basic wage and Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) separately, compare both components; where it gives an all-inclusive rate, compare that total on the same unit basis. A central-sphere rate is not a universal rate for every worker in India.
What you need to verify
VDA is the variable cost-of-living allowance component associated with minimum wages. In the central sphere, the Ministry of Labour and Employment says it revises VDA on basic minimum-wage rates every six months, effective 1 April and 1 October, using the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers. That schedule does not by itself tell you which rate applies to your job: the responsible government, covered employment, worker category, location classification and effective date all matter. The Ministry’s March 2023 statement describes the central revision cycle, which is also noted in its 2024–25 annual report.

The Ministry’s 20 March 2023 statement describes the central VDA as a cost-of-living allowance revised on the basic rates of minimum wages every six months to protect minimum wages against inflation. It says the revisions are based on the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers. This explains why VDA can change while the basic rate in a schedule remains separately stated; it does not mean that a particular central order covers every worker, or that the same dates and rates apply to every state or union territory.

- Your wage slip or payroll statement for the period in question.
- Attendance or other records showing the days or hours paid in that period.
- The official minimum-wage or VDA notification that covers those dates and your work.
- Any employer-provided explanation of the wage calculation, including the rate and classification used.
Also note the wage period shown on the slip and the work location to which the classification applies. Keep the document showing how many days or hours were recorded alongside the slip; a rate comparison is difficult to check if the amount paid and the period it covers are unclear. If the employer has supplied a calculation, retain it so you can compare its stated rate, category and area with the notification rather than relying on a remembered or verbally quoted amount.

A gross salary figure alone may not make the comparison clear: the notification may specify basic wage and VDA as separate components, or present an all-inclusive minimum. You need the notification’s terms and units to decide what to compare. A payslip can use labels that differ from the notification, so do not assume that an allowance with a similar-sounding name is VDA; ask payroll how it is treated in the calculation.
Find the rate that applies to your work
Start by identifying the competent government. The Ministry explains that central and state governments set or revise rates within their respective jurisdictions. The Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) publishes central-sphere minimum-wage and VDA orders; Shram Suvidha’s lookup is specifically for the central sphere. If your work falls under a state or union territory schedule, find the applicable order from that government instead of treating a central-sphere result as conclusive. The official Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) minimum-wages index lists central orders and corrections, while the Shram Suvidha central-sphere search states its scope.
For a central-sphere check, use the CLC index to locate the order and any later correction or corrigendum that relates to it. The Shram Suvidha lookup can help find a central-sphere rate, but its stated scope matters: a result from that search does not establish the rate for a state or UT job. If you are unsure which authority’s schedule governs the work, identify the employment and the place where it is performed, then ask the employer which notification it applied. The responsible labour department or an appropriate worker-support adviser can help clarify an unresolved jurisdiction or classification question.

Once you know which authority to check, confirm that the notification covers your work and the correct category. A schedule may list particular employments and distinguish workers by category or skill level, and it may divide locations into areas. Do not assume that a notification for one employment covers all workers, or assign yourself to an area or category based on a guess. Use the definitions and classifications in the relevant order; if they are unclear, ask payroll which classification it applied and how it determined it.
Keep the jurisdiction, employment, worker category and work location as separate checks. A central order may be limited to named types of work, and a state or UT order may have its own scope and classifications. An area label such as A, B or C only has meaning within the notification that defines it; do not transfer an area classification from one schedule to another. Likewise, do not choose a category solely because its rate appears on a slip or in a search result. The order’s coverage and definitions are what you need to compare with the work and payroll classification.

Follow these steps to check the calculation
- Write down the pay period. Record the start and end dates of the wage period on your slip. The applicable rate is the one effective for the days being checked, not necessarily the latest rate you happened to find. A notification published later can specify an earlier effective date, so read both dates.
- Choose the responsible authority and order. Establish whether the applicable schedule is central-sphere or state/UT, then locate the official notification for your employment. For a central-sphere order, use the CLC index; for a state or UT job, locate that government’s applicable order. Check whether the index lists a correction or corrigendum that affects the order.
- Match the employment and worker category. Read the coverage and category definitions in the order. Confirm that they describe the work and category used for your wage calculation; do not substitute a different employment or skill category simply because its rate is easier to find.
- Match the area or city classification. Find the area classification stated in the notification and determine which one applies to the work location under that order. If the location or classification is disputed or unclear, get the employer’s basis rather than guessing.
- Separate the components the notification separates. If it lists a basic rate and VDA, put the wage-slip entries beside those figures and compare each component. If it gives an all-inclusive minimum rate, compare the wage amount on that basis. Do not silently count an unrelated allowance as VDA.
- Make the units and period comparable. Check whether the notification rate is daily, monthly or stated in another unit, and compare it with pay for the corresponding period and recorded days or hours. Do not turn a daily figure into a monthly figure using an assumed number of workdays; use the units and calculation basis provided by the order and payroll record.
- Record any difference and ask for the calculation. Note the order, effective date, employment, category, area, units, wage-slip entries and attendance record used. If the figures do not reconcile, ask the employer or payroll office to identify the notification and calculation it applied. If the facts or classification remain unclear, consult the responsible labour department or an appropriate worker-support adviser.
As you work through the list, write down the answer to each check rather than recording only a final total. For example, note the notification title and date, the date from which it says the rate applies, the employment and category listed, the area classification, and whether its rate is daily or monthly. That creates a short audit trail: if a figure looks different, you can identify whether the question is about the order, the classification, the period or the arithmetic.
Where a payroll period crosses a rate’s effective date, do not apply one rate to the entire period without checking the dates. Identify which days fall before and after the stated effective date, and ask payroll how it treated them. The applicable notification and payroll records must provide the basis for the comparison; this article does not supply a universal way to prorate a mixed-period wage or substitute a monthly equivalent for a daily rate.
How to compare basic wage, VDA and the total
For an order with separately stated components, compare like with like. For each applicable rate unit, check the basic wage against the basic-wage entry and VDA against the VDA entry; then check that their combined amount matches the notification’s stated total, if it provides one. This helps distinguish a component mismatch from a simple difference in the pay period or units. If the order gives only an all-inclusive rate, use that total rather than inventing a basic/VDA split.
For instance, if an applicable notification specifies a daily basic rate and daily VDA, the first comparison is between those daily amounts and the corresponding payroll amounts for the days in question. It is not a direct comparison between one daily notification rate and an entire monthly gross salary. The order and the payroll records must supply the basis for any conversion or period calculation; do not infer one from a headline salary figure.
When the notification gives a basic amount plus VDA, check both the components and their sum. If the notification also prints a total, use it as a cross-check on the addition. A mismatch in the VDA entry may not be explained by a matching-looking total alone, and a difference in a gross figure may reflect a period or unit mismatch rather than a different notified rate. Keep separate notes for the basic amount, VDA, total and any other payroll entries instead of combining them prematurely.

When the order gives an all-inclusive amount, compare that amount with the relevant wage amount on the same basis. Do not create a breakdown of that total unless the notification or payroll calculation supplies one. Similarly, do not count an allowance as part of VDA merely because the employer includes it in a gross figure. The comparison is with the elements and treatment stated in the applicable order, not with labels inferred from the total alone.
Keep the documents together so another person can follow your work: the notification and any correction, the wage slip, the attendance or hours record, and a brief calculation showing the period, category, area, units and amounts compared. If the employer used a different category, area or rate, ask for the specific basis in writing. An unexplained difference is a reason to seek clarification, not by itself a final finding about the amount legally owed.
A narrowly scoped central-sphere example effective 1 April 2026
The CLC’s order dated 30 March 2026 sets rates payable from 1 April 2026 for employees in specified loading and unloading employments: railway goods sheds and parcel offices; other goods sheds, godowns, warehouses and similar employments; docks and ports; and passenger, goods and cargo handling at airports. The following are daily rates in that order, not rates for every central-sphere worker, every employment or any state/UT schedule. Read the order and its classifications before using a figure.
| Area in the order | Basic wage per day | VDA per day | Total per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Area A | ₹523 | ₹304 | ₹827 |
| Area B | ₹437 | ₹256 | ₹693 |
| Area C | ₹350 | ₹206 | ₹556 |
For example, if the order covers the work and the applicable classification is Area A, its stated daily components are ₹523 basic wage and ₹304 VDA, adding to ₹827 per day. For Area B the listed components add to ₹693 per day, and for Area C they add to ₹556 per day. These sums help check the order’s component arithmetic; they do not establish how many days an individual was entitled to be paid, what monthly amount to use, or whether the order applies to a particular worker. Those details must be checked against the actual work, dates, area classification and payroll records.
The same order says its VDA calculation reflects the average CPI for Industrial Workers rising from 413.52 to 424.80 as of 31 December 2025, Base 2016=100, an increase of 11.28 points. It says the VDA was rounded up to the next rupee in accordance with a Minimum Wages Advisory Board decision. Those details explain the calculation in this particular order; do not treat its rounding statement as a general rule for state schedules or other orders.

Use this example only if the order covers the work being checked, the applicable area and category match, and the period includes days on or after its effective date. To verify a different period, employment or jurisdiction, find the notification that applies to those facts; the example cannot establish an individual worker’s entitlement by itself. The CLC index also lists earlier central orders and corrections, including the October 2025 order and its corrigendum, which may be relevant when checking an earlier period.

A comparison can show that the wage-slip entries do not appear to match the rate you selected, but the result depends on having selected the correct notification, employment, worker category, area, dates and units. Before drawing a conclusion, check for an amended order, a different effective date, a classification difference, or a comparison between unlike periods. Ask payroll to show the rate and arithmetic it used.
A useful clarification request is specific: identify the wage period and the notification you believe may apply, then ask which notification, effective date, category, area and unit the employer used. If the employer points to a different order or classification, compare its scope and effective date with the work rather than comparing only the headline totals. Keep the response with your other documents. This gives the responsible labour department or a worker-support adviser concrete information to review if the question remains unresolved.
No worker-specific shortfall, arrears, deduction treatment or remedy can be calculated from a rate table alone. That requires the worker’s jurisdiction, job classification, work location, wage slips, attendance and pay period, along with the applicable order and relevant facts. If you cannot resolve the classification or calculation with payroll, the responsible labour department or an appropriate worker-support adviser can help identify the next step for your circumstances.

How do I check whether my employer applied the revised minimum wage and VDA correctly?
Identify the responsible government, the employment and worker category, the work-area classification, and the wage period. Find the official notification effective for those dates, then compare its basic wage and VDA separately—or its all-inclusive rate—with the matching wage-slip entries and attendance or payroll records. Keep the notification, any correction, the slip and the calculation together.

Is VDA included in the minimum wage?
VDA is a variable cost-of-living allowance component associated with minimum wages. The applicable order may list basic wage and VDA separately or state an all-inclusive rate. Follow that order’s presentation: do not assume an unrelated allowance is VDA, and do not invent a basic/VDA split where the order gives only a combined rate.
Does the central-sphere VDA rate apply to every worker in India?
No. Central and state/UT governments set or revise rates within their respective jurisdictions, and an order can be limited to specified employments, categories, areas and effective dates. The CLC index and Shram Suvidha lookup concern the central sphere; use the relevant state or UT government’s order for work covered by that jurisdiction.
When should I use a revised rate if the order was published after the pay period?
Read both the publication date and the effective date. A notification published later may specify an earlier effective date, so compare the dates stated in the order with the days in the wage period. If a period crosses the effective date, ask payroll how it treated the different dates and check that calculation against the order and records.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I compare the notification’s daily rate directly with my monthly salary?
Not directly. Compare matching units and periods, using the recorded days or hours and the calculation basis stated in the order and payroll records. Do not convert a daily figure to a monthly amount using an assumed number of workdays or rely on a gross salary total alone.
What should I do if my wage slip does not appear to match the notification?
First recheck the authority, order and any corrigendum, then confirm the effective date, employment, category, area and units. Ask the employer or payroll office to identify the notification and calculation it used. If the classification or difference remains unclear, consult the responsible labour department or an appropriate worker-support adviser.
What are the April 2026 central-sphere figures?
A CLC order dated 30 March 2026 sets daily rates effective 1 April 2026 for specified loading and unloading employments. It lists Area A at ₹523 basic plus ₹304 VDA, total ₹827; Area B at ₹437 plus ₹256, total ₹693; and Area C at ₹350 plus ₹206, total ₹556. These are not universal rates and should only be used when the order’s employment, classification, area and dates apply.
The Bottom Line
To verify a revised minimum wage, match the official order to your authority, employment, category, area and pay dates, then compare its components and units with your wage slip and attendance records. Ask payroll for its notification and calculation if anything does not reconcile. The April 2026 CLC figures are a limited central-sphere example, not a rate for every worker in India.
