How to Check Whether Your Electricity Comes From Nuclear Power

Check your supplier’s disclosure for the service on your bill, then use regional or national generation data only as context—not as proof of which plant supplied your outlet.

Check the fuel-mix or electricity disclosure for the utility or supplier and the specific service named on your bill. Confirm the reporting year and what the figures measure, then see whether nuclear is listed. In the U.S., the EPA’s Power Profiler can estimate the generation mix for your area, while the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) provides national and more detailed generation data. Neither a regional estimate nor a national statistic proves which plant supplied the electricity at your outlet.

Start with the supplier and service on your bill

  1. Find the utility or electricity supplier. Use the company identified on your bill, not just the name of a billing or payment processor.
  2. Identify the specific service or product. If your market lets you choose a supplier or plan, note the product name too. A company may disclose different mixes for its default service and optional products.
  3. Look for the disclosure. Search the supplier’s website for terms such as “fuel mix,” “resource mix,” “environmental disclosure,” or “electricity label.” Check that the disclosure applies to your service and note its reporting year.

Read the label’s accounting basis as well as its percentages. A figure might describe electricity generation, a delivered mix, or energy attributes; those are not interchangeable. The EPA explains that a utility’s electricity service is generated from a mix of resources and technologies. Its delivered-electricity overview also reports a U.S. generation mix for 2020, when nuclear was 20%—a historical figure, not a current estimate.

Use U.S. tools for context, not individual tracing

EPA Power Profiler: estimate your regional mix

Enter a ZIP code or select an eGRID subregion in the EPA’s Power Profiler. It estimates the generation mix for a region. That can help put a supplier disclosure in context, but it is not a result for your supplier’s particular contract and does not trace the electricity reaching your home.

EIA: check national and detailed generation data

The EIA’s electricity overview gives national context; its electricity data pages link to state, plant, generator, and company information. Match every statistic to its year and make sure it describes actual generation rather than capacity. For example, the EIA overview reports that about 18% of U.S. utility-scale electricity generation came from nuclear energy in 2025. The EPA reports nuclear at 18.2% of U.S. electricity production in 2022. These are different years, so they should not be treated as competing readings of the same period.

Know what a nuclear percentage can—and cannot—tell you

Figure or disclosure What it describes What it does not establish
National or regional generation mix Electricity generated across a defined geography and period. EPA reported 18.2% nuclear for U.S. electricity production in 2022; EIA reports about 18% of U.S. utility-scale generation in 2025. The mix assigned to a particular supplier product or the generating plant behind an individual household’s electricity.
Supplier or product disclosure The service or product covered by that disclosure, under its stated rules, year, and accounting basis. A universal, directly comparable format across countries. For example, the UK government says its supplier fuel-mix disclosure table is compiled on an attribute basis and differs from the country’s generation mix.
Electricity at your outlet Power delivered through an interconnected grid where supply and demand are balanced. A household-level identification of the generating plant for each unit consumed. The cited tools and disclosures report generation, mix, or contractual accounting—not the physical path of each electron.

Ask the supplier when the label is unclear

Contact the supplier and ask about the exact service or product on your bill. Useful questions include:

  • Does this disclosure include nuclear power?
  • Which reporting year does it cover?
  • Does the figure describe generation, delivered electricity, or energy attributes?
  • If a certificate or green-power product is involved, what exactly is being purchased, and what claim does the supplier make about it?

In the U.S., the EPA explains that retail renewable energy certificates (RECs) are sold separately from electricity and do not physically deliver electricity to customers. A certificate or other contractual claim should therefore be understood as an accounting or purchasing arrangement, not proof that nuclear-generated—or renewable-generated—electrons came through a particular outlet. See the EPA’s REC topics for more on how RECs work.

If you are outside the United States

Look for the electricity supplier’s official fuel-mix or environmental disclosure, and check its year, product scope, and accounting basis. Rules, supplier choice, and disclosure formats vary by country and market. As the UK example shows, an attribute-based supplier disclosure can differ from a country’s physical generation mix; do not assume that another jurisdiction uses the same method.
