Start with the exact sneaker release
Record the brand, model, colorway, release version and style or product code. Compare the listing with a brand reference or established retailer listing for that exact shoe. Similar colorways or different release years may have legitimate differences, so a broad comparison can lead to false alarms.
Check whether the product code and described colorway correspond to the shoes shown. A mismatch is a reason to pause and ask questions, not proof by itself that the pair is counterfeit.
Request photographs that let you compare the pair
Ask for clear, current photos of both shoes and their details. Useful views include:

- Toe shape, side panels, heel and outsole
- Insoles, stitching and logo placement
- Size and product labels
- Box label and any included accessories
Compare the details with references for the precise model and release. Check that the photographs appear to show the same pair throughout; inconsistent details between images or unexplained differences from the reference warrant further verification.
A pocket magnifier may help you see small stitching or label details, but it is only an inspection aid—not an authentication test. eBay says its authenticators examine shoe structure, materials, tags, logos, packaging and accessories, illustrating why a reliable assessment considers multiple features rather than one supposed tell: eBay Authenticity Guarantee for sneakers.

Do not treat packaging or paperwork as proof
A box, receipt, tag or QR code can be copied or separated from the shoes. Treat these items as supporting context and compare their information with the pair, but do not rely on any one of them—or on a seller’s assurance—as proof of authenticity.
Assess the seller and the transaction
Before paying, consider whether the seller has a history you can check, answers questions consistently, provides detailed original photographs and offers written return terms. Use a protected payment route and keep the transaction on-platform where possible. Pressure to move off-platform, refusal to provide additional photos or an implausibly attractive price are risk indicators, not proof that a pair is fake.

Check the actual authentication route for the listing
Marketplace authentication is not one universal process. Eligibility and handling can depend on the item, condition, marketplace site, delivery destination and order route. A platform’s description is its own policy, not an independent guarantee, and a badge or general service page does not necessarily mean every listing receives the same inspection.

For any platform, confirm the route for your exact listing and destination, how discrepancies are handled, the return and dispute rules, and the total cost before ordering. Save the listing and terms you relied on.

Document the pair when it arrives
- Photograph the package and shoes before removing tags or altering the item.
- Compare the delivered pair with the listing photos and the reference for the exact product.
- If something does not match, keep the listing, messages, receipt and packaging, then report the issue promptly through the platform’s stated process.
What counterfeit statistics can—and cannot—tell you
A November 2025 Executive Briefings on Trade article hosted by the U.S. International Trade Commission reported U.S. Customs and Border Protection footwear seizure values of about $65 million in 2015 and more than $127 million in 2024. Those figures describe seizures, not total counterfeit sales; the briefing’s authors also state that their views do not represent the Commission, its commissioners or the U.S. government. StockX reported in 2022 that its authenticators had inspected more than 30 million products and prevented $60 million in counterfeit sneakers from reaching buyers. That is StockX’s historical company-reported figure, not an independent estimate of current performance. StockX’s statement.
