Verify an unexpected Social Security deposit against your bank transaction history and your own records in my Social Security. If it is still unclear, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) using contact details you find yourself on SSA.gov or call 800-772-1213. Do not send money or share personal or banking information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly. A deposit alone does not prove that a related call, text, email, or letter is genuine—or establish that the payment was calculated correctly.
Check the deposit before responding to anyone
- Confirm the transaction with your bank. Review its date, amount, and description. Ask the bank whether it can identify the originator. Use the bank’s own app, website, or number—not contact details supplied in an unexpected message. A transaction description is a starting point, not a full explanation of why the amount was paid.
- Compare it with your SSA records. Navigate to SSA.gov yourself, open my Social Security, and compare the payment information and any available notices with the bank transaction. Check the amount and date, and look for an explanation in your account or a written notice. An unfamiliar amount or missing explanation is a reason to ask SSA, not to assume the deposit is either legitimate or fraudulent.
- Contact SSA through an independently verified route if needed. Use the contact information on SSA.gov or call 800-772-1213. SSA lists this number for direct-deposit help; the appropriate route and availability depend on the request and benefit type. Explain what appears in your bank account and ask SSA to check your record. Do not use a phone number, web link, or payment instructions supplied by an unsolicited caller, text, email, or letter.
- Keep a record of what you find. Note the transaction date, amount, description, any notice, and the date and outcome of contacts with the bank or SSA. Do not share account credentials or authentication codes with an unsolicited contact. If you speak with SSA or your bank, keep track of the official route you used and any next steps they give you.
There is no reliable way to determine from a public webpage whether your particular payment was intended, correctly calculated, retroactive, or a correction. Those questions require checking your bank transaction and SSA record through official channels. The same is true if you want to know whether an overpayment exists on your record: a message from someone claiming to represent SSA is not an official determination.

Why might you get an extra Social Security payment?
An unexpected deposit can prompt a reasonable question: “Why did I get an extra Social Security payment?” The available public information cannot identify the reason for a specific person’s deposit. It could not establish whether your payment was retroactive or corrected, or whether the amount reflects an overpayment. Compare the transaction with your own SSA account and notices, then ask SSA to explain it if the records do not answer the question. Do not rely on a caller’s explanation merely because the caller knows that a deposit arrived.

An unexplained bank deposit calls for verification against bank and SSA records. An unsolicited demand for money or personal information calls for caution, regardless of whether a deposit exists. A written SSA overpayment notice calls for following the notice’s formal instructions and deadlines. These situations can look related, but the evidence and next action differ.

Separate a real deposit from a scam message
SSA may call for business reasons—for example, after a recent benefit application, when a beneficiary needs to update a record, or when someone requested a call. But a caller’s knowledge of your name or a real deposit does not authenticate the call. If you are unsure, end the call and contact SSA using a number you independently locate. The fact that a call might be legitimate does not mean you must provide information or payment while on an unexpected call.
SSA advises: “If you receive an unexpected call, text message, email, letter, or message on social media, asking for personal information or payment, be skeptical.” Treat an unexpected demand for personal details, banking information, or money as unverified until you have checked through an official channel. Urgency, threats, and instructions to use a prescribed payment method are warning signs described in SSA’s scam guidance.
Threats and payment demands are warning signs
SSA says it will not threaten arrest or legal action, suspend a Social Security number, or demand immediate payment. It will not require gift cards, prepaid debit cards, internet currency, or wire transfers. The agency’s FAQ states: “We will never: Threaten you with arrest of legal action.” That is SSA’s exact wording, including its apparent typo. If a caller uses threats or insists on one of these payment methods, hang up; do not pay or keep negotiating.

Report suspicious Social Security-related calls to the SSA Office of the Inspector General (OIG). Do not call back using a number from the message, click an unexpected payment link, or rely on a caller ID display as proof of identity. A message may use SSA’s name or refer to a payment, but that does not turn its payment instructions into an official SSA request.

If your bank details or payment destination changed unexpectedly
Contact your bank and SSA promptly using independently verified channels if your bank account information appears to have changed without your permission or a payment is missing. Ask each organization what protective steps apply to your specific record; a general public page cannot resolve an individual account issue. Do not assume that the existence of a payment destination change means the bank or SSA has already identified the cause.
Unauthorized direct-deposit changes and diverted payments have been documented. In a 2025 report covering a specific group of cases from October through December 2023, SSA OIG identified 3,109 beneficiaries who reported nonreceipt after direct-deposit changes initiated by 800-number staff. OIG estimated that 1,197 of those beneficiaries—38.5 percent of the examined group—had misdirected payments totaling $2.2 million. These are historical findings about that examined set, not a current fraud rate or a measure of the chance that any one deposit is fraudulent.
SSA’s March 12, 2025 release separately said, “Approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct deposit fraud is associated with someone calling SSA to change direct deposit bank information.” That is an agency-reported estimate in a dated release, distinct from the OIG’s examined-case figures; neither figure should be applied as a current probability for an individual payment. The two figures describe different reported findings, not a reason to assume that a particular change or deposit is fraudulent.
How to manage direct deposit safely
SSA’s official account service is one route for changing direct-deposit information. Current SSA guidance also describes bank enrollment and phone or office routes in applicable circumstances. Follow the current instructions for your benefit and request, and verify the destination account in your SSA record after a change. SSA says you do not need to prove your identity simply to keep receiving benefits in the bank account already on file. If someone unexpectedly asks you to prove your identity by changing or confirming bank details, independently contact SSA before acting.

If the account shown in your SSA records is unfamiliar, or your bank confirms that a payment went somewhere you did not authorize, report the issue promptly to both organizations through contact details you find independently. Ask what protective steps apply to your case, and record when you reported it and what each organization advised. The OIG findings show why an unexplained change deserves prompt follow-up, but they do not establish the status of your own account.
If SSA sends an overpayment notice
An overpayment is money received beyond what was due. It is different from an unsolicited caller’s claim that you owe money: an SSA notice explains the specific reason for the alleged overpayment. SSA says causes can include missing or incorrect information about work, residence, marital status, or income. Read the notice and use its instructions and deadlines; do not treat a message using SSA’s name as a substitute for the notice.
A notice is the starting point for understanding the agency’s determination. Check the amount and stated reason, and decide whether you disagree with the finding, need to ask SSA not to require repayment under the waiver process, or agree that repayment is due. If any part of the notice is unclear, use the official contact route and instructions in the notice rather than an unsolicited payment link or phone number.

- You disagree that an overpayment occurred or with the amount: SSA says to appeal. Follow the appeal instructions and deadline in the notice. An appeal addresses whether an overpayment occurred or whether the amount is correct.
- You seek to avoid repayment based on your circumstances: Ask SSA for a waiver using the process in the notice. A waiver request is distinct from an appeal; use the waiver process if your concern is seeking to avoid repayment based on the circumstances SSA considers.
- You agree an overpayment occurred and need to repay it: Use an official repayment method that matches the notice. SSA identifies Pay.gov as an online route when the overpayment letter includes payment instructions and a Remittance ID; its repayment page describes other official methods too.
SSA’s public guidance says it waits at least 30 days after sending an overpayment notice before beginning collection. It also says collection will not begin while SSA decides a waiver or appeal requested within 30 days. Because instructions can vary with the benefit and case, check the actual notice and follow its stated requirements. Do not assume that these general timeframes replace a deadline or instruction in your own notice.

To avoid a fake repayment link or phone number, navigate to SSA.gov independently and confirm that the method matches the notice. Do not voluntarily return a suspicious deposit just because an unsolicited caller tells you to; first verify the issue with SSA. If SSA determines there was an overpayment, use the notice and official repayment, appeal, or waiver process rather than the instructions of an unexpected contact.

| Situation | Evidence to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Unexplained deposit, no SSA notice | Bank transaction and your available my Social Security payment information or notices | Ask the bank and SSA through independently verified channels to identify and explain it. |
| Unexpected message demanding money or information | The sender’s behavior, not the fact that a deposit exists or caller ID appears familiar | Do not respond with sensitive details or pay; disconnect and contact SSA yourself. Report suspicious Social Security-related contact to OIG. |
| Bank details changed without permission or payment missing | Your bank records and SSA direct-deposit information | Contact both the bank and SSA promptly through verified routes and ask what protections apply to your record. |
| Written SSA overpayment notice | The notice’s stated reason, amount, instructions, and deadline | Appeal, request a waiver, or repay through an official method as appropriate to your situation. |
The key distinction is the source of evidence. For an unexplained deposit, compare bank and SSA records. For a suspicious contact, judge the behavior—especially threats, immediate payment demands, or unusual payment methods—and verify independently. For an overpayment, rely on the written SSA notice and its formal process. Do not let one situation stand in for another.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did I get an extra Social Security payment?
A public source cannot identify why a particular person received a particular deposit. Check the transaction date, amount, and description with your bank, then compare it with available payment information and notices in my Social Security. Ask SSA through an independently verified route if the reason is still unclear; do not assume the payment is retroactive, corrected, or an overpayment without confirmation.

Is a deposit in my bank account proof that an SSA message is real?
No. A deposit does not authenticate a call, text, email, or letter about it. Verify the transaction against your bank history and SSA records, and contact SSA using a number or contact route you locate yourself. Do not use a phone number or link in an unsolicited message.
Should I return an unexpected Social Security payment?
Do not voluntarily send money back because an unsolicited caller or message tells you to. First verify the payment with SSA. If SSA later determines that an overpayment occurred, follow the written notice’s official repayment instructions—or use its appeal or waiver process if those fit your concern.
What if someone calls saying I must pay immediately or risk arrest?
SSA says it will not threaten arrest or legal action, suspend your Social Security number, or demand immediate payment. It also will not require gift cards, prepaid debit cards, internet currency, or wire transfers. Hang up, do not pay or share personal information, and report suspicious Social Security-related calls to SSA OIG. If you want to check whether SSA needs to contact you, call back through a number you find independently.
How can I tell whether a direct-deposit change is unauthorized?
Compare the bank account information in your SSA record with the account you authorized and review your bank transactions. If a change is unfamiliar or a payment is missing, contact your bank and SSA promptly through independently verified channels and ask what protective steps apply to your case. Public guidance cannot determine the status of your individual record.
What should I do with an SSA overpayment notice?
Read the notice for the reason, amount, instructions, and deadline. SSA says to appeal if you disagree that an overpayment occurred or with its amount; a waiver request is a separate process for seeking to avoid repayment based on your circumstances. If you agree repayment is due, use a method confirmed through SSA’s official guidance and matched to the notice. SSA says it waits at least 30 days after sending a notice before collection, and collection will not begin while it decides a waiver or appeal requested within 30 days; follow the requirements in your own notice.
Do the reported direct-deposit fraud numbers show that my payment is likely fraudulent?
No. SSA OIG’s 2025 report described 3,109 beneficiaries who reported nonreceipt after certain direct-deposit changes initiated by 800-number staff in October–December 2023; it estimated 1,197, or 38.5 percent of that examined group, had misdirected payments totaling $2.2 million. SSA also gave a separate estimate in a March 12, 2025 release. These dated findings are not current individual probabilities and cannot establish whether your deposit is legitimate.
The Bottom Line
Check the transaction with your bank and your own SSA records before acting. Treat unexpected demands for information or payment skeptically, and verify through contact details you find independently. If SSA issues an overpayment notice, use its written instructions and formal appeal, waiver, or repayment process—not an unsolicited caller’s demands.
