For the Ethereum Foundation’s current Glamsterdam notice, ordinary Ethereum mainnet users and ETH holders do not need to update a wallet or take action: the notice schedules an upgrade for Sepolia, not mainnet. The announced Sepolia activation time—October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC—has passed; Hoodi and mainnet dates were not set in that notice. Check the network named in any upgrade alert before acting, because a testnet activation does not mean Ethereum mainnet has upgraded.
First, check which network the notice is about
Ethereum wallets and dApps can connect to different networks. An upgrade applies to the network named in its announcement, not automatically to every network a wallet can access. The Ethereum Foundation’s Glamsterdam Testnet Announcement, posted September 28, 2026, scheduled activation on Sepolia at epoch 353,024, slot 11,296,768, or October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC. That scheduled time is now past. The notice listed Hoodi and mainnet dates as undecided.
So if you are using Ethereum mainnet, that Sepolia announcement alone is not a reason to change wallet settings, install software, or move ETH. The Foundation’s FAQ answers the mainnet user and ETH-holder question directly: “No. This announcement concerns Sepolia.” That answer is specific to this announcement; it does not mean users can ignore future notices that actually concern mainnet.
What to do depends on your role
| Who you are | What to check | Action for this Sepolia notice |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary mainnet user or ETH holder | Whether the notice names mainnet or only a test network | No action is required because of this Sepolia announcement. |
| Sepolia node operator | The announcement and release notes for both execution and consensus clients | Use client releases that explicitly support the scheduled activation and follow the clients’ update instructions. |
| Wallet or dApp developer | Whether application assumptions depend on changed protocol behavior | Test on Sepolia and review gas accounting, estimation, logs, opcodes, and client interfaces. |
| Hosted RPC or other infrastructure customer | The provider’s official status and compatibility notices for the service and network you use | Follow the provider’s instructions; there is no complete compatibility list covering every provider and application. |
Ethereum nodes combine an execution client and a consensus client. The ethereum.org node setup guide describes running a node; the Nodes and clients overview explains the client layers. A change to one layer is not a substitute for checking the other when an upgrade notice calls for both.

How to verify an upgrade alert before acting
- Read the network name. Check whether the alert concerns Ethereum mainnet, Sepolia, Hoodi, or another chain. Do not treat a testnet date as a mainnet date.
- Identify the affected software and your role. A user of a hosted wallet, a node operator, and a dApp developer have different responsibilities. A protocol upgrade notice is not automatically a request for every user to install an update.
- Confirm the alert with official sources. Check the Ethereum Foundation’s protocol notice and the official release notes or status page for your wallet, dApp, RPC provider, or client. The Foundation’s Mainnet Merge Announcement also advises users to verify unusual extra instructions rather than assuming they are necessary.
- For a node you operate, check both client layers. Verify that execution and consensus client releases support the relevant network upgrade, then follow the release-specific update instructions.
- For an application you build, test its assumptions. Use the affected test network and check the areas the upgrade changes, rather than treating a wallet’s ability to connect as proof of compatibility.
What Glamsterdam could mean for wallet and dApp developers
The Foundation’s Glamsterdam announcement describes changes spanning execution and consensus, including enshrined proposer-builder separation (EIP-7732), block-level access lists (EIP-7928), and adjustments to gas accounting and state growth. Its developer guidance calls for testing on Sepolia and assessing effects on gas accounting, logs, opcodes, and client interfaces.
Review gas ceilings and estimates
A particularly concrete compatibility risk is code or tooling that assumes a hard-capped maximum gas limit. In its earlier Platåberget testnet notice, published August 17, 2026, the Foundation said tools relying on that assumption—including wallets and gas estimators—would break and need updating. This is a warning for developers and tool maintainers to test and revise affected assumptions; it does not establish that every consumer wallet is broken or that users should install a special upgrade tool.

Check behavior, not just connectivity
Test transaction construction and estimation, how the application interprets logs, any use of relevant opcodes, and interactions with execution or consensus client interfaces. The exact impact depends on the application’s implementation. The cited Foundation guidance identifies these areas to examine, but it does not provide a compatibility verdict for every wallet, dApp, or service.
A successful chain switch does not prove upgrade compatibility
An application can use wallet_switchEthereumChain to request that a wallet change its active chain, when the wallet supports the method. The method is defined in EIP-3326. A successful switch confirms network selection; it does not test whether the wallet or dApp correctly handles the protocol rules on that network.

Where to check for service-specific compatibility
There is no complete compatibility matrix in the cited notices for every consumer wallet, hosted RPC provider, and individual dApp. For the product you use, check its own official release notes or service status notice and confirm that the notice applies to the same network you use. If the notice concerns a future mainnet upgrade, use the date and instructions published for that mainnet upgrade rather than extrapolating from Sepolia.
