For a withdrawal already in progress, open the network’s official bridge transaction history and look up the transaction hash that initiated it. Then confirm the withdrawal’s stage: initiated on the L2, proven on Ethereum, through any applicable challenge or delay period, and finalized on Ethereum. A confirmed transaction on the L2 alone does not mean the funds have arrived on Ethereum.
First, make sure you mean an L2 bridge withdrawal
An L2 bridge withdrawal moves an asset from a Layer 2 network to Ethereum. It is different from withdrawing staked ETH or validator rewards: validator withdrawal credentials govern staking withdrawals, not bridge transactions. Ethereum’s documentation explains the distinction between credential types: withdrawal credentials.
For a bridge withdrawal, note the exact L2, bridge, asset, and direction before checking status. A deposit from Ethereum to an L2 follows a different route, and a third-party fast bridge may have different status information from the network’s canonical bridge.
How to check the status of a specific withdrawal
- Open the network’s official bridge. Use the network’s own documentation to locate its current bridge and transaction-history interface. Avoid relying on a search result or an unfamiliar site for a transaction lookup.
- Find the transaction that began the withdrawal. Search the bridge history using the initiating L2 transaction hash. Arbitrum’s official FAQ recommends checking the bridge history to check the status of a deposit or withdrawal, including when a withdrawal is ready to claim: Arbitrum transaction-status guidance.
- Read the status as a stage, not just a label. Check whether the withdrawal has been initiated on the L2, proven on Ethereum, passed its challenge or delay period, and finalized on Ethereum. Labels vary between bridges, so compare the displayed stage with that network’s current official instructions.
- Verify the Ethereum-side transaction. If the bridge indicates that the withdrawal was proven or finalized, follow its linked Ethereum transaction or use the relevant explorer to confirm the corresponding on-chain event. A completed L2 transaction is only the start of some withdrawal flows.
- Check whether a separate claim is still needed. Some flows require a further Ethereum transaction after the wait. The bridge history or network instructions should indicate whether the withdrawal is ready to claim and what action remains.
What the withdrawal stages mean
The exact process depends on the rollup and bridge. In the OP Stack withdrawal flow, the user initiates the withdrawal on the L2, proves it on Ethereum, waits through the challenge period, and then finalizes it on Ethereum. Optimism’s specification states that after the challenge period, a relayer submits a withdrawal-finalizing transaction to the OptimismPortal contract; the flow may still require the user or another party to complete the required transaction. See the OP Stack withdrawal specification.

- Initiated on L2: The withdrawal request has been made on the Layer 2. This does not establish that it has reached Ethereum.
- Proven on L1: The withdrawal has been presented on Ethereum as required by that system. A proof is not necessarily the final transfer.
- Challenge or delay period: The protocol is still enforcing its required waiting period. A pending withdrawal at this stage is not, by itself, evidence that withdrawals have been disabled.
- Finalized or ready to claim: The wait has ended, but check whether the bridge requires an additional Ethereum transaction before the asset is available at the destination.
How long should an L2 withdrawal take?
There is no single wait time for every Ethereum L2. Ethereum.org describes an optimistic-rollup challenge period of roughly seven days. Treat that as a general description, not a guarantee for every network or transaction, and check the named L2’s current documentation for its applicable timeline. The page was updated June 23, 2026: Ethereum.org’s optimistic-rollup overview.
Other designs and services can have different timing. For example, ZKsync documentation describes a three-hour minimum execution delay for supported ZKsync chains, reduced from 21 hours. That figure is chain-specific and can change; consult the current ZKsync documentation for the chain you are using rather than treating it as a universal L2 wait time.

A liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee, but that is a separate service path from the canonical withdrawal. Its availability, timing, and terms do not establish how long the network’s own withdrawal takes.
How to tell whether the network still supports withdrawals
A single pending transaction cannot answer whether a network still has a valid route for users to exit. Check the network’s current official bridge, status page, and withdrawal documentation, then compare those instructions with the relevant on-chain transaction records. Look for a documented route from the L2 to Ethereum and whether the network reports an operational issue affecting that route.

For a useful network-by-network check, compare these points:
- Which official interface shows withdrawal history, and what do its status labels mean?
- Does the withdrawal require a proof on Ethereum?
- What challenge period or execution delay applies?
- Is a separate Ethereum claim or finalization transaction required?
- Does the protocol document a forced-inclusion or other escape route if its sequencer or operator is unavailable?
These details are protocol-specific. Ethereum.org notes that some ZK-rollup designs allow direct submission to the rollup contract to address censorship, but this is not a guaranteed feature of every L2. If the sequencer or operator is unavailable, follow the named network’s official instructions; do not assume a universal emergency exit. See Ethereum.org’s ZK-rollup overview.

When a pending withdrawal needs investigation
Compare the transaction’s current stage and elapsed time with the relevant network’s stated process. If the bridge history stops updating, shows an error, or the expected delay appears to have passed without a finalization or claim option, consult the network’s current status page and support documentation. Use the initiating hash when seeking help, and do not submit another withdrawal or share a wallet recovery phrase in response to an unsolicited message.
For transaction-specific verification, use the explorer linked by the official bridge or documentation. Confirm that you are checking the right network and transaction; similarly named assets and third-party bridge interfaces can make a correct-looking status misleading.
