For a Zcash node wallet, the clearest documented method is z_viewtransaction "<txid>": look for shielded spends or outputs labeled Sprout, Sapling, or Orchard. The standard gettransaction result does not include complete shielded-component details.
What counts as evidence that a Zcash transaction is shielded?
A Zcash transaction can contain transparent components, shielded components, or a combination. The fact that a payment uses Zcash does not by itself show which kind of activity it includes.

- Shielded-pool evidence: transaction details show a shielded spend or output associated with Sprout, Sapling, or Orchard.
- Transparent-component evidence: a record explicitly labeled
transparentestablishes that the relevant component is transparent. It does not establish that every component in a mixed transaction is transparent.
Report the pool or component the wallet actually identifies. Shielded-pool activity does not mean every fact about a transaction is hidden or that the people involved have complete anonymity. Zcash’s protocol includes both transparent and shielded activity, as well as cryptographic structures that remain relevant to the transaction.
How to check using a Zcash node wallet
The official RPC documentation surfaced for Zcash 6.12.2 distinguishes a general wallet transaction record from the more detailed shielded view.

- Find the transaction ID. Locate the transaction in the wallet that sent or received the funds, and copy its transaction ID (
txid). - Review the standard wallet record if useful. Run
gettransaction "<txid>"to retrieve in-wallet transaction details. This RPC does not provide complete shielded-component information, so its output alone may not answer the question. Zcash gettransaction RPC documentation. - Request the shielded details. Run
z_viewtransaction "<txid>". Examine the response for shielded spends and outputs and their pool labels—Sprout, Sapling, or Orchard. Those components are direct evidence of activity in the identified shielded pool. Zcash z_viewtransaction RPC documentation.
z_viewtransaction is documented for detailed information about an in-wallet transaction; it is not presented as a general public lookup service for any transaction ID.
How to check a received payment
If your wallet tracks the receiving address, the z_listreceivedbyaddress RPC returns received records with a pool field. Its documented values include transparent, sprout, sapling, and orchard. Use the field to describe the pool for that received component rather than inferring the status of every part of the transaction. Zcash z_listreceivedbyaddress RPC documentation.
Can you tell from a wallet screen or public explorer?
Start with the transaction details in the wallet you control. Wallet interfaces differ, and there is no single display convention established across wallets. Some may expose pool-level information; others may not show enough detail to determine the transaction’s components.
A public explorer’s abbreviated summary is not conclusive if it omits a shielded breakdown. The official documentation cited here describes wallet-scoped RPC data; it does not establish how every public explorer displays every transaction. Likewise, a shield icon or the wallet brand alone does not prove which pool a particular transaction used.
Why the address alone does not settle it
A unified address can represent multiple receiver types. Its format therefore does not prove which pool a specific transaction used; inspect transaction-level details instead. The official Zcash Learn article explains that a unified address is generated from multiple Zcash address types and that, alongside features such as autoshielding, it enables shielded-by-default transactions in supporting wallets. Zcash Learn: What are Zcash unified addresses?
Wallet behavior also varies: official guidance describes wallets that shield by default, wallets that let the user choose, and wallets limited to transparent transactions. Do not infer the transaction’s actual pool solely from a wallet’s defaults or supported modes. Zcash Learn: What is Zcash?
How to state what you found
Keep the conclusion tied to the evidence. For example: “The wallet’s transaction view lists an Orchard shielded output,” or “The received record identifies this component as transparent.” If the wallet or explorer does not expose pool-level information, say that the display does not establish whether the transaction used a shielded pool; do not treat missing details as proof that it did not.
