Compare the personalized notice from the Social Security Administration (SSA) with the benefit details in your personal my Social Security account. Check the effective date, gross benefit, deductions and stated reason. A 2026 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) may explain a change, but the amount deposited can also be affected by Medicare premiums, overpayment recovery or other factors in your benefit record. The notice and your record—not the deposit alone—are the best way to identify what changed.
Start with the notice and your benefit record
SSA’s notice explains a change to your benefits, including when it takes effect and, when applicable, the new benefit amount and deductions. Many beneficiaries can also find their COLA notice in the Message Center of a personal my Social Security account. SSA mails notices as well; online availability depends on the account and notice settings.

Use the notice as the starting point for understanding a payment change. General announcements explain broad rules, but they cannot show how SSA calculated an individual benefit. A bank deposit by itself is especially limited: it shows the amount paid, not necessarily the gross benefit or the reason for a deduction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the notice while checking your account so you can compare the same benefit, effective date and type of amount. A notice may show an entitlement before deductions as well as amounts withheld; the bank deposit reflects what remains after the applicable deductions. Those figures answer different questions. If you compare a prior deposit with a new gross benefit, or compare amounts for different months, the result can look like a discrepancy even when the figures describe different things.

Collect these details before you compare amounts
- Effective date: When does the change apply? A notice may describe a benefit amount that starts in a particular month, while a payment arrives on a different date.
- Benefit type: Identify the program or benefit covered by the notice. The relevant calculation and timing depend on the person’s record and circumstances.
- Gross benefit: Find the benefit amount before deductions, if the notice provides it.
- Deductions or withholding: Note each listed amount, such as a Medicare premium or overpayment recovery.
- Stated reason: Look for the explanation SSA gives for the change and any instructions for questions, appeals or requests.
Write down the old and new amounts next to their effective dates. Then list each deduction separately. This simple comparison can help distinguish a change to the benefit itself from a change in what SSA withholds. If one amount is not shown or a line item is unclear, note that specific question for SSA rather than guessing from the total deposit.
How to check whether the 2026 COLA affects you
SSA set the 2026 COLA at 2.8%. It applies to Social Security benefits payable in January 2026; increased Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments began December 31, 2025. That timing means the applicable program matters when you compare the notice with a payment.
- Read your COLA notice. Find the effective date, updated benefit amounts and listed deductions. SSA’s announcement says personalized COLA notices provide amounts and deductions.
- Sign in to my Social Security. Check the Message Center for a COLA notice and review the benefit details available in your account. Not every notice or delivery setting is necessarily available online.
- Compare the old and new gross amounts. If you have a prior benefit notice or account record, compare the benefit entitlement before deductions with the new amount. Do not compare only the bank deposit.
- Read the deductions separately. Check whether a Medicare premium, overpayment recovery or another item changed. A deduction can offset some or all of the increase in the amount deposited.
- Use the notice’s instructions if the figures do not make sense. The notice identifies the case-specific steps and dates that apply to your issue.
SSA reported an average monthly increase of about $56 for retirement benefits beginning in January 2026. That is an agency-wide average, not a prediction of what any one person will receive. SSA said the increase applied to Social Security benefits and SSI payments for 75 million people. Individual amounts depend on the person’s benefit record and deductions.
The practical question is not simply whether the COLA exists, but whether your own notice shows the adjustment and how the amount was calculated for your record. The 2.8% figure is a nationwide adjustment, not a calculator for the take-home amount. If your payment changed by a different percentage, that difference alone does not show that SSA made an error. Compare the notice’s new benefit figure and deductions with the corresponding earlier figures before drawing a conclusion.
The increased SSI payments began December 31, 2025, while Social Security benefits payable in January 2026 received the COLA. This distinction can matter when checking a bank statement near the end or beginning of the year: identify the program and the period the payment covers, then use the effective date stated by SSA. Do not assume the date a deposit appears is itself the date the new benefit amount became effective.
Why your deposit may not rise by 2.8%
The COLA percentage is not a promise that the amount landing in your bank account will increase by that same percentage. SSA describes the calculation as a sequence: it adjusts the primary insurance amount (PIA), applies factors such as early or delayed retirement, subtracts applicable offsets such as the Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance premium, and truncates the resulting amount. Other benefit factors and rounding can also affect the final figure.
As a result, compare the actual amounts on your notice rather than multiplying your current deposit by 1.028. The result depends on the benefit calculation in your individual SSA record; a public COLA announcement cannot reproduce it.

Separate benefit changes from deductions
For a clear comparison, treat the gross benefit and the net payment as different figures. The gross benefit is the entitlement before deductions; the net payment is what remains after applicable amounts are withheld. If the gross benefit increased but a deduction also increased, the deposit may rise by less than expected, stay similar or fall. If the notice does not show the calculation clearly, ask SSA about the specific line item rather than trying to infer a cause from the deposit.
For example, a COLA can raise the gross benefit while an increased Medicare premium reduces the amount left after withholding. An overpayment recovery can also reduce the deposit even if the underlying benefit amount has risen. These are examples of how a gross increase and a smaller net change can coexist; they do not identify the cause of any particular person’s payment. The notice and the benefit record are needed to determine which amounts apply.
There is also no single “expected” dollar increase that applies to everyone. The average retirement increase of about $56 is useful context, but SSA’s calculation depends on the person’s PIA and factors affecting that benefit. A recipient should use the personalized amount in the SSA notice instead of treating the average or headline percentage as an individual entitlement estimate.
Check Medicare premiums if a deduction changed
SSA lists the 2026 standard Medicare Part B premium as $202.90 per month. Income-related premiums may be higher, so the standard figure is not enough to determine what an individual owes or what SSA should deduct. Check the premium in your own notice or account.
Recommended Free Tools
If a Medicare premium appears to be the reason for the difference, follow SSA’s appeal information for that determination. SSA also describes a way to request a lower income-related amount when income has fallen because of a qualifying life event. If the income figure used by SSA is wrong because the IRS record is wrong, SSA says the person must correct it with the IRS.
- Compare the premium listed on the notice with the amount withheld from the benefit.
- Check whether the notice identifies an income-related premium rather than assuming the standard Part B amount applies.
- Use the SSA instructions that match your reason for disputing or requesting a change; an appeal, a request based on a qualifying life event and an IRS correction address different issues.
These routes address different problems. An appeal is relevant when disputing the premium determination; a request based on a qualifying life event is relevant when income has fallen under the circumstances SSA recognizes; and an IRS correction is needed if the income information itself is inaccurate in the IRS record. First identify what the notice says about the premium and the income figure behind it. Then follow the matching instructions rather than submitting a request that addresses a different issue.
The $202.90 standard premium is a reference point, not a cap or a guarantee about the amount withheld from your Social Security benefit. An income-related premium can be higher. Your own notice and account are the appropriate places to confirm what SSA is applying in your case.

What to do if the notice says you were overpaid
An overpayment notice describes the amount and reason SSA says it paid too much, and it explains the available options. The right option depends on whether you dispute the decision, need relief from repayment, or can repay but cannot manage the proposed recovery rate.

| Option | Use it when | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Appeal | You disagree that an overpayment occurred or dispute the amount. | The overpayment finding or calculation. |
| Waiver | You believe repayment should not be required—for example, because you cannot afford it or believe recovery would be unfair. | Whether SSA should collect the overpayment under the circumstances described in your request. |
| Request a different recovery rate | You accept that repayment is due but the proposed withholding or repayment rate is unaffordable. | How much is recovered at a time; it does not, by itself, dispute the debt or ask SSA to waive it. |
These are distinct remedies, not interchangeable labels for the same request. Read the notice to determine which choices are available and how to make them. SSA materials may describe different timing or terminology; use the deadlines and process stated in your current notice rather than assuming a universal 30-day or 60-day deadline.
Choose the request that matches the problem
- If the issue is whether SSA overpaid you, or how much it says you owe, consider an appeal.
- If you seek relief from repaying the amount because of your circumstances, consider a waiver.
- If repayment remains due but the proposed amount is unaffordable, ask about a different recovery rate.
Start by locating the stated overpayment amount, the reason SSA gives and the proposed recovery or repayment terms. Check the options and response dates printed on that specific notice. If you believe the underlying decision or amount is wrong, an appeal addresses that dispute. If you are not challenging the finding but are asking SSA not to collect under your circumstances, a waiver is the relevant kind of request. If the debt remains due but the proposed rate is the problem, ask about a different rate.
Do not assume that asking for a different recovery rate resolves whether the debt is valid, or that disputing the amount automatically requests relief from repayment. The remedy should match the issue you want SSA to consider. Because deadlines and procedures can differ by notice and case, use the instructions attached to your own notice and contact SSA if you are unsure which option fits.
If the payment change is still unexplained
If the notice and account do not explain the difference, contact SSA through its official channels and ask about the specific effective date, gross benefit or deduction that changed. Keep the notice available so you can refer to its explanation and follow its instructions. A third party cannot determine the cause from general public information; the relevant calculation and payment history are in your SSA record.

This focuses the question on the part of the calculation that is unclear, rather than asking someone to infer a cause from a deposit total.
Do not assume every change is a COLA adjustment, and do not assume a deposit difference proves an error. A change can involve a benefit calculation, a deduction or an overpayment decision; the notice identifies the issue SSA is addressing. If the information appears wrong, use the correction, appeal or other request process that the notice provides.

There is no need to rely on a paid intermediary to interpret a general COLA announcement as if it were a personal benefit calculation. The key information is in the SSA notice and account, and SSA is the agency that can address an individual’s record. Use official SSA channels for questions about private benefit information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the national COLA figures can—and cannot—tell you
SSA said the 2026 COLA was 2.8%, compared with 2.5% for 2025. It also said COLAs had averaged about 3.1% over the preceding decade. Those figures describe broad adjustments; they do not establish the cause or exact size of a particular person’s payment change. SSA’s stated purpose for an annual COLA is to help benefits reflect economic conditions, not to guarantee a specific net deposit for every beneficiary.
SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in the agency’s October 24, 2025 announcement: “Social Security is a promise kept, and the annual cost-of-living adjustment is one way we are working to make sure benefits reflect today’s economic realities and continue to provide a foundation of security.” The statement describes the purpose of the adjustment; it does not promise that each beneficiary’s deposit will rise by exactly 2.8%.
The next COLA is a separate announcement from the 2026 adjustment. SSA’s COLA summary said it planned to announce the next adjustment in October 2026. Check SSA for an update rather than treating an announcement date as the adjustment itself or assuming a figure before SSA publishes it.
Where these instructions apply
This guidance concerns U.S. federal Social Security Administration notices and benefit records. State supplements, residence outside the United States, a representative payee and program-specific facts can affect an individual case. Public COLA figures and general explanations cannot resolve those case details; rely on the notice and SSA account for the person’s own benefit information.
The practical sequence is the same regardless of the suspected cause: identify the notice and effective date, compare the gross benefit, examine each deduction, and then follow the process SSA gives for the issue shown. If your case involves a state supplement, a representative payee or residence outside the United States, those details may affect handling, so ask SSA how the notice applies to the person’s circumstances.

Read the personalized SSA notice and compare it with the benefit details in your my Social Security account. Check the effective date, benefit type, gross amount and each listed deduction. Why did my Social Security payment change?
A 2026 COLA may be one reason, but a changed deposit can also reflect Medicare premiums, overpayment recovery or other factors in your benefit calculation. Compare the notice’s gross benefit and deductions with the prior amounts. The deposit alone does not show which item changed.
Why is my Social Security payment less this month even though there was a COLA?
The COLA adjusts the benefit calculation, but the net deposit can also be affected by deductions such as Medicare premiums or overpayment recovery. SSA applies benefit factors and offsets, and the final amount may not increase by exactly 2.8%. Check your notice for the gross amount, deductions and effective date.
When did the 2026 Social Security COLA take effect?
The 2.8% COLA applies to Social Security benefits payable in January 2026. Increased SSI payments began December 31, 2025. Check your notice for the date and amount that apply to your program and record.

If you dispute whether an overpayment occurred or its amount, an appeal addresses that decision. A waiver asks SSA for relief from repayment under the circumstances described in the request. If you accept that repayment is due but cannot afford the proposed recovery rate, ask about a different rate. Follow the options and deadlines on your specific notice.
Can my Medicare premium affect my Social Security deposit?
Yes. SSA may subtract Medicare premiums from a benefit. SSA lists the 2026 standard Part B premium as $202.90 per month, but income-related premiums may be higher. Check your own notice or account. SSA describes separate processes for appealing a premium determination or requesting a lower income-related amount after a qualifying life event; an incorrect IRS income figure must be corrected with the IRS.
Will my deposit increase by exactly 2.8%?
Not necessarily. SSA adjusts the primary insurance amount, applies relevant benefit factors, subtracts applicable offsets such as Medicare premiums, and truncates the resulting amount. Rounding and other benefit factors can also affect the final figure. Use the personalized amount in your notice rather than multiplying the deposit by 1.028.
The Bottom Line
To find out whether a Social Security payment change affects you, compare your SSA notice with your my Social Security account. Check the effective date, gross benefit, deductions and stated reason. The 2026 COLA is 2.8%, but it does not guarantee a 2.8% increase in your net deposit. If the change involves a Medicare premium or overpayment, use the specific appeal, waiver, correction or repayment instructions and dates in your notice.
