Sign in to your my Social Security account, check the earnings record behind your retirement estimate, and compare the monthly estimates for different claiming ages. That shows what Social Security currently estimates for you under the assumptions in its tools. It does not tell you exactly how a future program-wide financing shortfall would affect your check: the 2026 Trustees Report’s projected payable percentages are national estimates, and SSA does not provide a method to apply them directly to an individual account estimate.
Under the Trustees’ intermediate assumptions, combined Social Security reserves are projected to be depleted in 2034. At that point, continuing income is projected to cover 83% of scheduled benefits. Depletion does not mean all benefits stop, and the projection is not a cut currently being taken from your check.

What the 2026 Social Security projection says
The 2026 Social Security Trustees Report projects that the combined reserves of Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI) will be depleted in 2034. The report estimates that, when reserves are depleted, continuing income would cover 83% of scheduled benefits. These figures use the Trustees’ intermediate assumptions and current law; actual experience or legislation can change the outlook.
The combined figure is not the only projection relevant to beneficiaries. OASI, which pays retirement and survivors benefits, has a separate projected depletion date. DI reserves are projected to remain positive throughout the report’s 75-year projection period, 2026–2100.

| OASI reserves | Projected depletion in the fourth quarter of 2032; continuing income projected to cover 78% of scheduled OASI benefits at depletion | A separate projection for retirement and survivors insurance, not the combined OASDI figure. |

Reserve depletion is not the same as benefits ending
Reserve depletion means the program’s accumulated reserves are exhausted. It does not mean Social Security has no income after that date: the Trustees’ projection includes continuing payroll-tax and other income, which would pay a portion of scheduled benefits. The 83% and 78% figures describe projected shares payable from that continuing income for their respective programs; they do not mean that everyone’s personal benefit is already being reduced by those amounts.
It helps to distinguish three ideas that can otherwise get mixed together. A reserve depletion date is a projection about when accumulated reserves would run out. A payable percentage estimates how much of scheduled benefits continuing program income could cover at that point. A personal retirement estimate is an amount SSA calculates using your earnings record and the age when you apply. The first two describe the program as a whole; the third is tied to an individual record. They are related topics, but they are not interchangeable numbers.

It is a conditional estimate under the Trustees’ assumptions and current law, not a change currently shown in your account. The 2026 Trustees Report says the projections are the Trustees’ best estimates of the future course of the population, economy, and program under current law. That is an important qualification: the date and percentage can change as experience, assumptions, or legislation change.
How to check your own Social Security estimate
- Sign in to your my Social Security account. Open the retirement estimate to see a benefit estimate based on your earnings record and the age when you apply. If you do not have an account, the Social Security Administration’s benefits-estimate guidance directs you to create one.
- Review the earnings record used for the estimate. Look for missing or inaccurate covered earnings. The estimate depends on the earnings SSA has recorded; an error can therefore affect the estimate shown.
- Compare estimates at different claiming ages. Review the monthly amounts shown for the ages available in your account. SSA’s detailed calculator can also show how different retirement-age scenarios affect estimates.
- Keep the estimate and the Trustees’ projection separate. Your account estimate relates to your own record and claiming age. The Trustees’ payable percentages are national funding projections. SSA’s published guidance does not provide a formula for multiplying your account estimate by 83% to predict your personal benefit.
As you review the estimate, focus on what it is and what it is not. It is a personalized calculation based on the information and assumptions in SSA’s tool. It can help you compare claiming-age scenarios and understand how your recorded covered earnings relate to the monthly amounts shown. It is not a guarantee of the amount you will eventually receive under every future law or financing scenario.
Give the earnings history particular attention before relying on the result. Compare the wages shown with your own records where possible, and note years that appear missing or inaccurate. The point is not to adjust the Trustees’ national percentage yourself. It is to make sure the personal estimate starts from the earnings history SSA has on file. If the record is wrong, the estimate may not reflect your covered work accurately.

When comparing claiming ages, look at the monthly figures side by side rather than treating one figure as the only answer. The age when you apply is one of the factors SSA says affects the estimate. The account or calculator can show how different retirement-age scenarios change the estimate, but those scenarios remain estimates. They help explain the claiming-age comparison; they do not resolve the separate question of what future program financing will be.
If you do not have an account or prefer to examine scenarios with more control over the information entered, SSA’s benefits-estimate guidance and Detailed Calculator are official starting points. A paid service is not required simply to check the SSA estimate or compare claiming-age scenarios; the useful next step for this question is to review SSA’s own tools and the record behind the calculation.
What can change the estimate in your account?
SSA bases retirement estimates on covered work earnings and when you apply. The earnings calculation counts wages only up to the annual Social Security taxable maximum. In 2026, that maximum is $184,500. Pensions, investments, and other income are not counted as work earnings in the estimate.
This means two people with similar overall household finances can see different retirement estimates if their covered earnings histories or application ages differ. A pension or investment income may matter to a person’s broader retirement planning, but it is not itself covered work earnings in the SSA retirement estimate described here. Do not add non-work income to the earnings record as if it were Social Security wages.
If you keep working, a later year of earnings may increase your estimated benefit if it ranks among your highest-earning years and replaces a lower-earning year. That is one reason to check that your earnings record is accurate and to understand the assumptions displayed with an estimate rather than treating it as a guaranteed payment amount.

In practical terms, a new work year does not automatically mean the estimate rises. SSA’s explanation is conditional: the later year may raise the estimate if it ranks among the worker’s highest earning years and displaces a lower year. If it does not, the estimate may not change for that reason. This makes it useful to distinguish a change caused by a more complete or updated earnings history from a change in the Trustees’ national projection.

The $184,500 taxable maximum is also not a target you need to enter in the account or a promised benefit amount. It is the 2026 annual cap on earnings counted in the calculation. Earnings above the applicable cap do not count as additional covered earnings in that year’s estimate under the description SSA provides. For your estimate, the key check is whether the covered earnings SSA records for you are accurate, not whether your total income from every source matches the record.
Use the detailed calculator when you need more scenarios
For a typical personalized estimate, SSA points people with a my Social Security account to the estimate in that account. Its Detailed Calculator is a more configurable alternative for examining scenarios, including different retirement ages.
The SSA Detailed Calculator page identifies version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026. SSA says that release updated projected benefit increases and average wage increases using assumptions from the 2026 Trustees Report. If you use the calculator, check that the assumptions and earnings information you enter fit your situation; a scenario is still an estimate, not a promise about future law or program financing.

The choice between the account estimate and the Detailed Calculator is mainly about how you want to examine the question. If you want the standard estimate associated with your own SSA earnings record, start with the account. If you need a more configurable scenario, the Detailed Calculator provides an alternative. Neither tool turns a national reserve projection into an exact personal cut calculation, because SSA does not publish a formula that applies the combined 83% figure to a particular account estimate.
Keep the calculator’s version and assumptions in mind when interpreting a result. Version 2026.2 was released July 13, 2026, and SSA says it updated projected benefit increases and average wage increases using assumptions from the 2026 Trustees Report. Those details explain the version’s basis; they do not make a scenario certain. A different future law, updated assumptions, or new information in your earnings record could affect the eventual result.
Do not confuse a COLA with a financing-related benefit cut
The annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and the Trustees’ long-range financing projections answer different questions. SSA announced a 2.8% COLA for 2026, based on the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025. After that adjustment, SSA estimated the average monthly benefit for retired workers at $2,071. That is an average, not an estimate of what every beneficiary receives; an individual’s dollar change depends on their benefit amount.

The COLA is an annual adjustment to benefits. It is not a personalized prediction of a future reduction related to reserve depletion, and it does not change how to read the Trustees’ national payable percentages.
These figures can appear in the same conversation about Social Security, but they measure different things. The 2.8% COLA is an annual adjustment announced by SSA for 2026, based on the specified CPI-W comparison. The $2,071 figure is SSA’s estimated average monthly benefit for retired workers after that adjustment. Neither figure tells you the future payable share for your particular benefit if program financing changes. Your own amount depends on your benefit, while the Trustees’ percentages describe projected program-wide financing.
For that reason, a COLA announcement should not be read as proof that a financing gap has been resolved or as evidence that an individual’s future benefit will be reduced by a certain amount. It is a separate annual adjustment. Likewise, an average monthly benefit is a population-level reference, not a substitute for your estimate in my Social Security.

- You can see the retirement estimate SSA calculates from your recorded earnings and selected claiming age, and compare estimates across ages.
- You can check whether the earnings record behind that estimate appears complete and accurate.
- You cannot determine an exact personal cut by applying the Trustees’ 83% combined-program projection to your account estimate. The official sources do not provide that individualized calculation.
- You should read the Trustees’ dates and percentages as conditional projections. The 2026 report states that its projections reflect the Trustees’ best estimates under current law; they may change as assumptions, experience, or legislation change.
The most useful next step is to check your own earnings record and claiming-age estimates, while treating the 2034 and 83% figures as a warning about projected program-wide financing—not as a notice that your current check has been cut.
A straightforward review can therefore answer several practical questions without pretending to answer one it cannot. You can find the benefit estimates SSA associates with your earnings and claiming age. You can identify whether the earnings history appears complete. You can see how alternative retirement ages change the estimates shown by the official tools. You cannot use those steps to calculate a guaranteed personal reduction from the Trustees’ 83% national projection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Social Security benefits be cut?
The 2026 Trustees Report projects that combined OASDI reserves will be depleted in 2034 under its intermediate assumptions. It projects continuing income would cover 83% of scheduled benefits at that point. This is a conditional, program-wide projection—not a statement that a cut is currently being taken from your check, and not an exact forecast for an individual account.
How do I check my Social Security benefits?
Sign in to your my Social Security account and open the retirement estimate. Review the earnings record behind it for missing or inaccurate covered earnings, then compare the estimates for different claiming ages. SSA’s Detailed Calculator is an official alternative for more configurable scenarios.
How much Social Security will I get?
Your personalized estimate depends on your covered work earnings recorded by SSA and the age when you apply. The account estimate or Detailed Calculator can show amounts for different claiming-age scenarios. The Trustees’ national payable percentage is not a method for calculating your individual amount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes the 83% projection mean my benefit will be reduced by 17%?
No. The 83% figure is the projected share of scheduled combined benefits payable from continuing income after projected combined reserve depletion in 2034. SSA does not provide a formula for applying that percentage to an individual account estimate, and the projection is not a current change to your check.
Why is the OASI date different from the combined OASDI date?
The 2026 Trustees Report gives separate projections for the programs. OASI reserves are projected to deplete in the fourth quarter of 2032, with continuing income projected to cover 78% of scheduled OASI benefits. Combined OASDI reserves are projected to deplete in 2034, with 83% payable from continuing income. DI reserves are projected to remain positive throughout 2026–2100.
Is the 2026 COLA the same thing as the projected financing shortfall?
No. SSA announced a 2.8% COLA for 2026 based on the CPI-W change from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025. That annual adjustment is separate from the Trustees’ long-range financing projections. SSA estimated the average retired-worker monthly benefit at $2,071 after the adjustment, but an individual’s dollar change depends on their benefit amount.
Do I need to pay for a service to check my estimate?
No paid service is required for the task described here. SSA directs people to their my Social Security account for a typical personalized estimate and offers its Detailed Calculator as a more configurable alternative.
The Bottom Line
Check your SSA earnings record, compare the claiming-age estimates in my Social Security, and treat the Trustees’ 2034 depletion date and 83% payable projection as national, conditional figures—not a calculation of your personal cut or a notice that your current check has been reduced.
