The job alone does not guarantee an increase: the result depends on your earnings record, how much and how long you work, and when you claim. You can check the likely effect by comparing your Social Security estimates with and without the new job’s expected earnings.
What “replacing a year” means
Social Security calculates retirement benefits using your highest 35 years of earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, the calculation includes zero years to make a 35-year record. Once you have at least 35 years, another work year can improve the calculation only if it ranks among the highest 35 years after Social Security applies wage indexing. The Social Security Administration explains that continued work can replace low-earning years with higher-earning years; it does not mean every new job automatically replaces a particular year.

| Your earnings history | What another year of covered earnings may do |
|---|---|
| Fewer than 35 years with earnings | It may replace a zero year if it is included among the 35 years used in the calculation. |
| At least 35 years with earnings | It may replace the lowest year in the selected 35 only if its indexed amount is high enough to rank above that year. |
The key comparison is not simply your new salary against the raw dollar amount shown for an old year. Social Security adjusts many earlier earnings for changes in average wages before choosing the 35 years. The year’s indexed value, rather than its unadjusted historical amount, is what matters to the selection. SSA’s calculation page describes the indexing and benefit formula, with worked examples for 2026.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →SSA puts the basic idea this way: “However, if you had continued to work, your low earning years are replaced with your high earning years.” The useful qualification is that an additional year must actually improve the 35-year calculation. If it is lower than every year already selected, it does not displace one of them. If your record has zeros because you have fewer than 35 earnings years, a qualifying new year may take a zero’s place instead.

It is also possible for a new job to produce no visible change in an estimate. That does not necessarily mean the work was not Social Security-covered; it may mean the earnings did not rank high enough to enter the selected 35, or the resulting change in the calculated benefit is too small to be apparent in the estimate you are viewing. SSA does not publish a general frequency or average increase for people who take a new job, so there is no single expected dollar gain to apply to everyone.
Check whether the job’s earnings count
Start with the kind of earnings Social Security uses. The estimate is based on covered earnings, not every source of income. SSA says pensions and investment income, for example, are not counted as earnings for this estimate. The agency’s benefits-estimate page lets you review your record and adjust expected future income.
For 2026, SSA says it taxes and counts earnings up to $184,500 for benefits. Earnings above that annual limit do not increase Social Security benefits for that year. The figure is the 2026 limit, not a permanent threshold; check SSA’s current information for the year you work. The same page lists $1,890 in earnings for one Social Security credit in 2026, with up to four credits available per year. Credits determine eligibility, not whether a new year replaces a low year in the benefit calculation.
Eligibility and benefit amount are separate questions. SSA’s January 2025 fact sheet says workers generally need 40 credits, typically earned over 10 years of work, to qualify for retirement benefits. Meeting that requirement does not mean a new year will raise the amount: the replacement test still depends on how the year ranks among your highest 35 indexed years. See SSA’s eligibility fact sheet.
For the replacement question, think in terms of annual covered earnings rather than just a job title, hourly rate, or advertised salary. The estimate is sensitive to what is entered as future income and how many years that income is expected to continue. If the new work is part-time, seasonal, or expected to last only a short time, use a realistic annual earnings amount and duration rather than assuming a full year at the stated salary. This is a way to make the tool’s assumptions match your situation; the estimate remains conditional on those assumptions.
The $184,500 limit and the credit amount answer different questions. The limit is the amount SSA says it taxes and counts for benefits in 2026; covered earnings above it do not increase benefits for that year. The credit figure is about accumulating eligibility credits. Neither figure tells you whether a year is high enough to replace one of your own 35 selected years. That depends on your personal indexed earnings record.

Compare your estimate with and without the new job
- Review your earnings history. Sign in to my Social Security and look over the earnings record year by year. Note any year or amount that appears missing or incorrect. If you find an error, follow SSA’s instructions for correcting your record; the available guidance does not establish which documents will be required in every individual case.
- Write down your current estimate and intended claim age. Use the retirement estimate in my Social Security, which shows estimates for different starting ages. Keep the age you expect to claim fixed when comparing work scenarios, so you do not confuse the effect of additional earnings with the effect of claiming earlier or later.
- Set a no-additional-work scenario. Record the estimate based on no further earnings, or the estimate that reflects your current future-income assumption. Make a note of the assumption you used.
- Enter the new job’s expected covered earnings. Adjust expected future income in my Social Security for the new job and the number of years you expect to work. Alternatively, use SSA’s online benefit calculator, which accepts covered earnings by year.
- Compare estimates at the same claiming age. Keep other assumptions unchanged and compare the projected monthly benefit with and without the new earnings. If you are considering several possible job durations or earnings levels, change one assumption at a time and note each estimate.
For a useful comparison, write down the scenario details alongside each estimate: the annual covered earnings entered, how many years you expect to earn them, and the claiming age. For example, compare the estimate assuming no additional earnings with one assuming the new job’s expected covered earnings for the likely duration of the job. If you also want to test a shorter job duration or a different earnings level, make that a separate scenario. Keeping one variable at a time clear makes it easier to see which assumption changed the estimate.

In both scenarios, keep the claiming age and other assumptions the same. SSA’s estimate considers different benefit-starting ages, and the amount changes according to when you begin benefits. Comparing one estimate at an earlier age with another at a later age would combine two effects: the projected earnings record and the timing of the claim. The same-age comparison is the cleaner way to isolate the likely effect of the job.
The comparison shows the estimated effect of your future-income assumptions; it does not necessarily display a line-by-line explanation identifying which old year a new year displaced. Treat the result as an estimate, not a guarantee. The benefit calculation depends on the earnings ultimately recorded, the applicable indexing and formula, and your claim age. SSA’s 2026 calculation examples illustrate the mechanics, but they are not personalized predictions.
You can also use SSA’s online calculator if you want to enter covered earnings year by year. That can help you test a record or future-work assumption in more detail. It does not remove the need to enter accurate information or turn a projection into a promise: your actual earnings may differ, and the recorded earnings history is what ultimately matters.
Before treating a difference as final, check that the baseline is what you intended. A current estimate may already assume some future earnings; adding a new job on top of that assumption could make the comparison misleading. Make the “without the new job” case and the “with the new job” case explicit, and avoid changing the claim age at the same time. If the estimated amounts are close, regard the result as a projected difference rather than proof that a particular past year has been replaced.

- SSA adjusts many earlier earnings for wage growth. This makes an old year’s amount comparable under the agency’s indexing method rather than treating its original dollars as equivalent to today’s dollars.
- SSA selects the highest 35 indexed years. If your record has fewer than 35 years with earnings, zero years fill the remaining slots. A new year can matter if it enters that selected set and pushes out a lower amount.
- SSA averages the selected earnings. The 35-year total is spread over 420 months to calculate average indexed monthly earnings, or AIME.
- A benefit formula is applied to AIME. The resulting amount is then adjusted according to when you begin benefits. That is why two people with the same new salary can see different estimated effects: their full earnings histories and claim ages may differ.
The sequence matters. First, SSA wage-indexes earlier earnings; then it identifies the top 35 years; then it averages those years over 420 months to calculate average indexed monthly earnings. A higher new year can improve the average by taking the place of a zero or a lower selected year. If the new year does not enter the selected group, it does not change that 35-year average. The benefit formula then uses AIME to produce a benefit amount, which is also affected by the age at which benefits begin.

This is why looking only at the nominal dollar amount from an old year can lead to the wrong conclusion. A much smaller dollar figure from an earlier year may have a different indexed value under SSA’s method. Conversely, a new salary that looks substantial compared with an old year’s unadjusted earnings is not by itself proof that the new year will be selected. The comparison should be made through SSA’s calculation or estimate tools, which apply the agency’s method.
For years after a worker reaches age 60, the 2026 examples on SSA’s calculation page use an indexing factor of one. That is part of the agency’s calculation method, not a rule that makes a post-60 job automatically replace a year or produce a set increase.
There is no single benefit increase attached to “one more year of work.” The impact depends on what the year displaces, how the replacement changes AIME, and the claim-age adjustment. A year that replaces a zero may affect the selected average differently from one that replaces a low but nonzero year. Even if the record improves, the final monthly amount is personal. SSA’s worked examples are useful for understanding the steps, but they are not an estimate for your own record.
If you are already receiving retirement benefits
Working after you claim can still increase your benefit if the additional earnings improve the earnings record. SSA says it reviews beneficiaries’ earnings each year for work that could increase the monthly benefit and will notify the beneficiary if an increase results. This annual review is separate from the retirement earnings test, which may temporarily withhold payments when someone works and claims before full retirement age. SSA’s current FAQ, dated January 2, 2026, explains both rules.
The 2026 earnings-test limits in that FAQ are:
| Situation in 2026 | Earnings-test limit |
|---|---|
| Under full retirement age for all of 2026 | $24,480 |
| Reaching full retirement age during 2026 | $65,160 for earnings in the months before reaching full retirement age |
These are year-specific limits, not thresholds for replacing a low year. Earnings-test withholding and a later earnings-record recomputation are different processes: one concerns payments while working before full retirement age; the other concerns whether earnings improve the benefit calculation. Check the current SSA FAQ for limits applicable to a different year.
Keep the two questions separate if you are deciding whether to work after claiming. First, could the additional covered earnings improve the 35-year record and lead to a higher monthly benefit after SSA reviews the record? Second, could the retirement earnings test withhold some payments because you are under full retirement age and your wages exceed the applicable limit? Withholding under the earnings test is not the same as a finding that the new year has replaced an older year. SSA’s current FAQ explains the 2026 limits and the separate annual review for earnings that could increase a benefit.

If you have already claimed, you do not have to assume that the original calculation can never change. SSA says it checks records annually for additional earnings that could increase benefits and will notify beneficiaries if an increase results. But working does not guarantee an increase, and the earnings test may affect payments before full retirement age. The rules and limits depend on the year and the worker’s age situation, so use the current SSA FAQ rather than carrying a 2026 figure into a later year.
What to take from your comparison
- If you have fewer than 35 earnings years, a new covered year may take the place of a zero year, subject to the calculation rules.
- If you already have 35 or more earnings years, focus on whether the new year’s indexed earnings can out-rank one of the lowest years in the selected 35.
- Use the same claim age and otherwise consistent assumptions for both estimates; the difference is more useful than comparing estimates built on different scenarios.
- Do not expect a specific increase from a job title or salary alone. Your earnings record and claim age determine the result, and an estimate may change as actual earnings are posted.
A practical takeaway is to make a small set of realistic comparisons rather than trying to predict the result from a salary figure alone. Use a no-additional-work assumption as a baseline, then test the expected covered earnings and likely duration of the job. If a different duration or earnings amount is plausible, test it separately. The estimates help you understand whether additional work may improve the calculation, while SSA’s recorded earnings history and benefit rules determine the actual result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will every new job replace a low-earning year in my Social Security record?
No. The job must produce Social Security-covered earnings that, after wage indexing, enter the highest 35 years used in your calculation. If your record has fewer than 35 earnings years, a qualifying year may replace a zero. If you already have 35 or more, the new indexed year must rank above a lower year in the selected 35.
Should I compare my new salary with the amount from an old year?
Not just with the raw amount shown for that year. SSA wage-indexes many earlier earnings before selecting the highest 35. Use the estimate tools or SSA’s calculator, which apply the agency’s indexing and benefit formula.
How can I check what a new job might do to my estimate?
Review your record and retirement estimate in my Social Security, note your intended claiming age, and compare a no-additional-earnings scenario with one that includes the new job’s expected covered earnings and likely duration. Keep the claiming age and other assumptions constant. SSA’s online calculator also accepts covered earnings by year.
Do pensions or investment income count as earnings for this calculation?
SSA says its retirement estimate is based on covered earnings and does not count income such as pensions or investments as earnings. Check that you are entering expected earnings from work, not other income.

What if my new earnings are above the 2026 Social Security limit?
SSA says it taxes and counts earnings up to $184,500 for benefits in 2026; earnings above that annual limit do not increase benefits for that year. This is a year-specific figure. It is not the threshold for replacing a low year, which depends on how the indexed earnings rank in your record.
Does earning enough Social Security credits mean my new job will raise my benefit?
No. Credits determine eligibility, while the benefit amount is based on the highest 35 indexed earnings years and other calculation rules. SSA’s January 2025 fact sheet says workers generally need 40 credits, typically earned over 10 years, to qualify for retirement benefits.
Can working after I start Social Security increase my benefit?
It can if the additional covered earnings improve your record. SSA says it reviews beneficiaries’ earnings each year and will notify them if an increase results. Separately, the retirement earnings test may temporarily withhold payments before full retirement age when wages exceed the applicable year’s limit.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SSA’s estimate show exactly which year the new job replaces?
The future-income comparison does not necessarily provide a line-by-line explanation naming the displaced year. Treat it as an estimate based on your earnings assumptions, not a guarantee or an itemized replacement notice.
The Bottom Line
To see whether a new job may replace a low year, compare SSA estimates with and without the job’s expected covered earnings while keeping your claiming age and other assumptions the same. The new year must enter your highest 35 indexed earnings years to improve the calculation, and any increase depends on your full record and claim age. Treat the result as a personalized estimate, not a guaranteed benefit change.
